“awww, widdle baby,” indy cooed, pinching julian’s cheek as she let out a series of giggles. she rubbed his arm then, though, a silent apology despite the fact that she knew he’d been exaggerating about the pain. “fine, i won’t tease,” indy said, plugging julian’s phone in and hitting play before resting it on the dash between them. she bopped along to the first song as it started, her mood the best it’d been in almost forever. “actually, this is some good shit, dude. i’m impressed.”

julian let out a garbled noise, twisting his face away from indy’s touch. “stop it,” he whined out, sounding very much like a petulant toddler. they fell into a comfortable silence right after, save for the rhythmic tapping of julian’s finger against the steering wheel. “i’m glad you like it.” julian beamed at indy, “’cause i spent the whole day yesterday choosing the right songs.” the hard work and effort clearly did pay off, if the look on indy’s face was any indication. “are you proud of me?”

( closed for @julianmcrtinez​ ) – there were rare times when harley was tempted to believed in fate– specifically, when fate lined up events in a way that optimized the chances of harley pulling his hair out. today, fate greeted him in the form of a stranger’s hand reaching for the last copy of hawking’s brief answers to the big questions and a cold wash of familiarity when harley looked up and saw exactly who the hand belonged to. “wow, martinez.” harley recovered quickly with a smirk, swiftly diverting the hand that had been reaching for the book too and crossing his arms instead. “still got the hots for space rocks, huh?”

the moment julian heard the familiar voice, his stomach lurched, mouth dropping open in horror as he looked up at harley kane-adams, one of the people he disliked (disliked was an understatement) back in high school. nothing much has changed, except harley seemed to give off a more asshole-ish vibe than before — or maybe it was julian’s clouded judgment. “i’m surprised to see you here. in oakum’s, of all places,” julian replied, “wait, no — are you lost?” he internally chided himself for having such a weak comeback — be pettier, julian.

theo sighed and walked over to julian, determined to make him feel better. “listen, uh, maybe we should just sit down and… watch a movie? do something that makes you happy?” is that what people did in this type of situation? he wracked his brain, trying to remember something from the ‘how to comfort a sad person’ article he read on the way. “do you wanna talk about it? do you— do you want a hug? i can hug you! if you want. um.”

it was only ten seconds after theo’s offer that julian realised what his friend was trying to do: theo was awkward, endearingly so, and that seemed to be enough to elicit a light laugh from julian. “i would love a hug,” he said, spreading his arms and grinning excitedly at the other. theo rarely expressed any form of physical affection, so julian was determined to milk it for all its worth.

Axton nudged him with his foot again, only this time, it was more of a complaint than a friendly shove. “Ugh seriously? Are you sure I can’t just exercise? I’ll even run further to make up for not taking the medication!” He knew there was no winning against Julian, the guy was even more stubborn than himself, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t make it as difficult as possible. JJ was his best friend, after all.

“absolutely not!” julian shrieked out with the fierceness of an angry mother. “you’re not going anywhere until your fever goes down.” julian knew there was no need to be so stern — it wasn’t like axton was dying, but he wanted to help his best friend get back on his feet as soon as possible. “now finish your soup.”

“badass, yeah, but not aesthetically pleasing. also, you’re the only person who appreciates my marks.” julian sighed forlornly, though his expression quickly shifted in a happier, brighter one. “yes! oh my gosh, that would be awesome.”

theo blinked as julian opened the door in a, well, sad condition. he wasn’t really sure where to go from here. “nothing much. uh, are you, like…” he trailed off, trying to think of something nice to say. “…okay?”

“yeah, of course — why wouldn’t i be?” he said, voice wet. was it easier to pretend that the loss of his favourite diner hadn’t left him feeling like a grieving widow? unfortunately, no. theo’s visit had been spontaneous, leaving julian absolutely no time to compose himself. closing the door behind him, julian puttered to the living room. “uh, do you want something to drink? i can - there’s juice in the fridge.”

Axton was surprised to hear Julian talk, his head snapping up to look at him with the spoon lodged in his mouth. Once he had registered the question he put the utensil down, frowning once again. “What do you mean, ‘how is it’? JJ you’re the best fucking cook I know, it’s delicious as always… And you know how much I hate vegetables.” He tried for a smile, nudging his friend’s leg with his foot. If he could get him to smile after that backhanded insult, he would regard himself as redeemed.

“i’m glad.” julian said, lips quirking up in a shy smile. as confident as he was in his cooking skills, julian still had a hard time receiving compliments. nevertheless, he was glad that axton was enjoying the soup. at least he’s done one good thing today. happily, he patted axton’s covered foot. “finish it up, okay? you still need to drink these after.” julian said, holding up the cold meds and waving them around for emphasis.

“Can’t I just go for a run or something? Isn’t exercise supposed to help?” He felt like he was being lectured, something he never did take kindly to. He got enough of that off of his parents “Alright, alright, yes mom.” As soon as he’d said it, he felt guilty, comparing anyone to his mother wasn’t exactly a compliment. In an attempt to ease the backlash of his sarcasm-turned-insult he avoided eye contact and ate his soup silently. Hopefully, Julian would remember that he sucked at apologies.

“you can go out and run when you’re feeling better.” julian answered pointedly, watching axton eat his soup in silence. the off-handed insult — admittedly — stung a little, but axton looked apologetic enough. he sat down on the edge of axton’s bed, gaze shifting down to his feet, although he did spare him a few glances every five seconds. since julian cannot endure the awkward air, the silent treatment didn’t last very long. “how is it?” julian asked sheepishly.

Axton groaned and laid back, rubbing his face in frustration. Julian was a sweetheart, the brother Axton never had, but god damn did he care a little too much. Maybe it was him being a jerk or maybe it was just that he wasn’t used to being so loved but either way, the constant mothering of the other boy was doing his head in. “JJ, I know you’re only trying to help, but you’re seriously burning my wick!” He pulled a face at the sight of the medicine, a frown dragging his brow down and a slight pout on his lips. Did he look like a child? Yes. Did he care? No. “I’m not having it.”

julian chose to ignore axton’s complaints, and he crossed his arms petulantly. "keep complaining all you want, but you’re drinking this whether you like it or not.” julian said, his words having an air of finality to them. if axton wanted to be extra difficult, then julian was more than ready to be just as stubborn. he placed the bowl on the tray and handed it to axton, careful not to spill anything.

“Dude, I told you, I’m fine.” Axton attempted to sit up further in a last ditch effort to get up and do something, promptly triggering a coughing fit. All the sitting around and staring at the ceiling and tv show reruns was starting to get to him, he needed to go somewhere, make himself useful, he’d even settle for a ride around the block on his bike. Alas, he hadn’t been careful enough and Julian had caught on to his illness. “No, I don’t, I can handle a bowl.” He could not, in fact, handle it. A few seconds after he took it from his friend’s hand, he could feel them burning (not that he would say anything).

julian sighed, reaching out to rub axton’s back comfortingly. “you’re obviously not,” he said, shooting him an unamused look. axton was stubborn, one of the qualities julian loved about him, but right now, it was infuriating. “i literally don’t care if i’m smothering you right now, just shut up and let me take care of you.” he said firmly, taking the bowl back and setting it on the nightstand. “i’ll get you a tray — oh, and medicine. hold on.” hurriedly, he moved to the kitchen, snatching a tray from the dish rack and rushing back to axton’s room, grabbing cold medicine along the way.

“i made you soup,” julian said softly as he carefully walked inside axton’s room, gingerly carrying a bowl of vegetable soup. it was hot — but not hot enough for him to start hissing in pain. julian had been carefully watching over axton after he had complained about his head mildly aching a couple of days ago, so when he found out that axton had, indeed, come down with a nasty cold, julian wasn’t at all surprised. 

“do you need a tray?” he asked, frowning in concern, “should i get you a tray?"
