the week before vacations we learned about the simple types of mechanisms that had to do with mechanical energy. those machines were the lever, the pulley and the incline. the lever is made my a bar that is supported at a stationary point (b) then points a and c are at the ends of the bar so if you apply force to point a then that force will become applied to point c. the pulley is a wheel on an axel and a rope goes around that wheel and the pulley is used to support what is on the end of the rope. and an incline plane is a flat surface that is at a specific angle and it is used to move objects from point a to point b

On Monday we did a lab. This lab was to help us better understand IMA and AMA. We would used pulley systems to measure the efficiency. The more simple the pulley system was, the great the efficiency was.

on monday we did a lab that focused on the difference between ideal mechanical advantage and actual mechanical advantage. to find the ideal mechanical advantage or IMA you took the distance input and divide that by the output distance or resistance distance. to find the actual mechanical advantage or AMA you took the rsistance force or output force and divide that by the input force or effort force. and to find the efficiency you take the AMA and divide that by the IMA

when i was doing the homework that i due monday i had some problems converting work into potential energy. then after i looked back at my notes i realized that work is equal to kinetic energy and kinetic energy is equal to the total energy minus the potential energy, so combining what i saw in both of those notes i was able to use this formula W=PE=mgh which was essentially W=mgh and after i was able to form that equation the rest of the homework went smoothly.

after learning about kinetic and potential energy we then started learning about conservation of energy. this means that in a closed system there is always the same amount of energy present. the energy can be present in two forms, kinetic and potential energy. this is evident in the picture above, at point A all of the energy in the system is potential energy but at point B all of the energy is kinetic energy, and at point D half of the energy in the system is potential energy and the other half is kinetic energy.

when i was looking at the spring in the video i began to wonder if when the energy in a spring is released and the compressed spring expands to normal size is work done? because the spring is moving back to normal size and the spring is exerting a force when released???

After we learned about kinetic energy, this week we learned about potential energy. Potential energy is stored energy while kinetic energy is energy in motion. this reminds me of a bike at the top of a hill, it is not moving but the potential energy is so high that if the bike moves a little then gravity will pull the bike down to hill. this can be used to determine how much energy will be produced from say a 3 meter fall. while kinetic energy is used to determine the exact energy being produced during, said fall. people care about potential energy because it helps people build roller coasters because they can use this to find out the power output and the future power output at certain points on a roller coaster and then can make the roller coaster with enough support so that it wont break when it is exerting high amounts of energy.

This week we learned about kinetic energy and how that relates to work. The formula for kinetic energy is KE=1/2mv^2 and the formula for work is W=Fd. KE = change in energy and change in energy = W therefore Fd=1/2mv^2. this helps us use the formulas we already knew and use them to get to know better the new formula of KE=1/2mv^2. Kinetic energy reminds me of a roller coaster because when it goes down and back up again the roller coaster is using kinetic energy.

this week we did a lab on power generation by students in our class. were were able to find the horsepower, wattage and foot pounds per second generated by all of the students. to find the amounts of power generated you needed to find the vertical distance of the stairs, the weight of the student in lbs and the time it took to travel the vertical distance. most students were able to generate less than 1 horsepower with a few able to generate more.

Today in physics we learned about work. work is ay force that causes an object to move a distance. work is only done if force is applied and an object is moved a distance, if only one is present no work is done. that means if you lift something, you are doing work because you are applying force to lift it and when you lift it it is moving a distance, but as soon as you stop moving it up and hold it in the same place no work is done. this reminds me of people lifting weights because they are moving the weights and applying force to move them. this is important because it helps us find the amount of force needed to make an object move a certain distance if you have the required energy.

On Friday we watched a video where a man jumped off a cliff and literally flew down the face of a mountain (see video). The video demonstrates many aspects of physics, like gravity, air resistance, mass, surface area, acceleration, distance, etc. It is amazing how Corliss is able to keep himself composed throughout the flight, because if he tucks his arms in too close to his body, his surface area will no longer be great enough to glide, and he will plummet to the ground.

Today we learned about conservation of momentum. An example of conservation of momentum is the recoil on a gun, even though you are shooting a bullet out the flip side is the chamber pulling back. this reminds me of those old cannons that were on wheels and when they shot they rolled backwards. this can be used to propel rockets in outer space where it is a vacuum and that means no particles to push off of. This is useful because it allows space shuttles to navigate and propel themselves in different directions in space so we can go to the moon and hopefully other planets someday.

while watching the Patriots wipe the floor with the Eagles i saw that all of the tackles, and collisions between players were inelastic collisions. this is because when the players collide energy as lost during the energy transfer as heat to the atmosphere. to make the collisions elastic they would have to have specially made gear to transfer energy with no loss of energy which is extremely difficult.

during the lab we did earlier this week we looked at inelastic collisions. the difference between inelastic and elastic collisions is that during an elastic collision no energy is lost in the atomsphere during the collision. during an inelastic collision energy is lost to the atomsphere during the collision. in the real world most of the collisions that occur are inelastic collisions because energy is lost as heat, but in the equations and problems that we look at are elastic collisions.

the mars rocer recently lanuched is the most developed rover ever sent to another planet. it can look for life by itself or by a manned controller. enough tools were built in to the rover that it does not need to come back to earth to determine if something is life or not. it can do all of that onboard the rover, and if it finds traces of life or life itself the scienticic cummunity would be exstatic because it is now realized that mars was inhabited or is inhabited which means that mars could become a possible place for us to live.

Today NASA launched the world’s biggest rover ever built to Mars to explore the planet. The rover, called Curiosity, has been sent to sample and analyze the soil and rocks on Mars. Its main goal is to find if there might have been at one time microbial life on the planet. If life or evidence of life is discovered by this rover, it will probably become known as one of the biggest if not the biggest scientific discovery even made.

the brand new mars rover is said to be able to look for and detect life that is similar to us. if it finds any life forms though that will allow us to hopefully send people to mars to examine the traces of life.

These 1 dimensional collisions were what we what we were looking at in the lab on friday. in the lab we looked at objects that differed in mass and velocity collide, then recorded what each object did after the collision. if the object with a smaller mass was attacking the larger mass then the larger mass would change direction and move faster and the object with a lesser mass would change direction and have a small velocity. if the larger mass was attacking the smaller mass, then the smaller mass would change direction and move faster while the larger mass would stay moving in the same direction with less velocity. The reason for these reactions is momentum because if the object with less mass has enough velocity then it can have the same momentum as the object with a large mass but little velocity.
