Evaluation
I did two projects for my NMP, First being an YCN Brief and other is my self-promotion piece. Before starting anything, I got into an animation technique called “rotoscoping” I was really impressed by it and it inspired me to use it in my projects. I started with doing the YCN brief, I chose the ITV2 brief in which they want us to create a 90 second video promoting their current airing shows, I then started researching which shows are currently airing, the main reason ITV2 want this video is because there are several reality shows leaving the channel and going to another channel, they want to she their audience tat ITV2 is still interesting with the reality shows leaving. I found couple of interesting shows and I chose: Coronation Street, Tricked, I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, The Big Reunion, Celebrity Juice, Britain Got More Talent, The Jeremy Kyle Show, Xtra Factor, Plebs and Magulaf Weekender. I chose 10 shows so that I could show each shows for 10 second.
Production came next, since my mind was set in using rotoscoping, I tried the Adobe After Effects very own rotoscoping tool called “Roto Brush”. What it does is capture human movement and get rid of the background, very similar to using a green screen but Roto Brush doesn’t require green screen. I filmed my self doing things related to the shows, for example I danced for the Britain Got More Talent segment and pretended to sing for Xtra Factor. I portray all the characters in the video. This whole production was done in a fairly good time, took me around 3-4 weeks to sketch storyboard to completing my animation, while putting the whole video together, I had to remove Plebs and Magulaf Weekender segments it is due to the limit the brief has set. With those 2 segments included, it was going over 90 seconds and the brief specifically want it to be 90 seconds.
When I was finished with the ITV2 brief, I moved on to creating my self-promotion piece. This time I used the original rotoscoping technique in which I animated frame by frame. The idea of the animation was to promote myself, so in the animation it shows me applying to an agency/business/company for a job, but it starts to get taller and taller due to me having very less experience and skills, I so I decide to go through these challenges to improve my CV to achieve my ideal job. I did my research on Rotoscoping on the previous ITV2 project so not much was needed for this so I moved on to production. I filmed myself doing many different things such as playing basketball, running on fields and more. That process took me around one week, and the rest of the time was spend animating myself. Rotoscoping is infamous due to it takes too much time to create, 100 frame equal to around 1-2 second, but the result is very satisfying because it looks very realistic and smooth. I did all the frame-by-frame animating part in Adobe Photoshop and later used After Effects to join all the animated clips together. Most of my Easter was spending rotoscoping the video files I recorded.
Overall I am satisfied with my work, I’m happy with the outcome of my ITV2 video, it works and it’s entertaining for the audience, and I had just about right amount of time on it. Because both animation were rotoscoped, I researched on it in ITV brief and didn’t research much while doing my Self Promo, this helped me save a lot of time and hat time was spend on rotoscoping frame by frame. I am also happy with the results of my self promo piece, my aim was to make it around 1 minute and 30 seconds but I manage to do more and made it 2 minutes. The only thing I am disappointed in was that I got a back injury 2 weeks from deadline, doctor suggested me to rest and due to that I could not film more scene and animated them, it is my fault and this is not excuse. Since the second year started, I always wanted to rotoscope and thanks to NMP I could do it and experience it.
Rotoscoping Final Result
Final Render - Final Piece
The following video is my final piece, I think the music works better in this then the previous one plus you can hear the sound effects.
Rotoscoping Final Render
Final Scene - Music Test
The following video is the one which I ended up not using as my final due to its music, I personally think it didn't work as well as the one i chose for my final
