My thoughts on the new first batcher (CRWC)
warning: this includes heavy spoilers of CRWC main story + this is VERY long.
-for reasons that will take literal weeks to finish this, this blog will not include the first batcher’s interaction with mistletoe cookie and bramble bat cookie, but it will mention first berry cookie.
this will be mostly about the first saga story and not the cookie challenge story , i will be focusing on them and their interactions w/ the main 4.-
(also FYI, english is not my first language, so spelling errors may occur.)
im not sure on what i was expecting the new first batcher (smarty) but i was completely blown away by their unique character and how they interact w/ others
two things out side of the storyline:
firstly how their name was honestly very predictable, with me and a couple of other friends calling them "smartie" or "nerdie",
but even before the name reveal, i was still not sure. especially on the shock i had when first milk cookie’s first batch turned out to be named "toughie"…
another thing i find interesting is how Smarty doesn't seem to be using any type of pronouns, everyone just calls smarty… smarty.
some of my friends say smarty uses they/them and my other friends say smarty uses he/him, but for the sake of this tumblr post i’ll use he/they/no prns when referring to smarty
now onto their character (story wise):
what I find so interesting about his character is how extremely loyal and independent he is despite their stubbornness, Smarty carries the burden of First berry’s episodes in a long period of time that they soon end up sharing very similar traits as first berry.
One of the traits Smarty has is how Smarty memorizes so many events that happened to them and chooses to keep some of the presents First Berry has originally given to him including the candy he really liked before;
and at some point in the story, he feels embarrassed to really admit that most of his gifts are still within the house.
Another point I would like to bring up is that he is the only other character who seems to actually communicate their needs very well and is independent (but not really I’LL GET TO THIS LATER)
I’m so used to seeing first batches (dozer, giggles, yummers, toughie) who happen to either not be able to fully comprehend things and just ball most of the time,
so seeing a character who belongs in the same category being able to comprehend danger is very refreshing, and I hope we get to see more of this in the future!
last point before i get into how he interacts with the main 4, is how Smarty isnt as independent as you’d really imagine. Especially since i’ve mentioned this a couple lines back about how much they rely on First Berry Cookie.
and because of that same reason, they become attached to her, even they know it’s wrong to do so since it feeds into her obsession and mental illness rather than fixing it, with them refusing to go with gingerbrave after being asked to several times.
he does say he wants to help First Berry Cookie at the end of the story, but there’s definitely more into this..
ok now for smarty’s relationship with the main four (GingerBrave, GingerBright, Strawberry Cookie and Wizard Cookie):
being completely honest, smarty was seen as passive aggressive to the main 4, and the main 4 seemed to care more about first berry more than smarty.
fortunately enough! each interaction is very different and unique in their own way at the end of the story.
Strawberry Cookie’s interaction with Smarty may not be direct, but Strawberry listens to smarty and takes it as a consideration and remembers their warnings later on in the story.
Wizard Cookie’s interaction with smarty is mutually bonding over on how they find it tiresome to be with the same group of people all the time + having to deal with their shenanigans every now and then. (wizard w/ gingerbrave, smarty w/ bramble bat, in specific.) They also share similar traits as wanting to know more than what they already know and being a know-it-all.
GingerBright’s interaction with Smarty is just mostly her pointing fun at Smarty for having a speech impediment (heavily implied, she doesn’t mean it in a negative sense). pointing out the obvious, like how Smarty speaks and understands things differently from the rest of the first batch that they have currently met. But overall, a neutral relationship compared to a positive one, with GingerBright helping Smarty to realise how bad the living conditions they are in really is, and hopes the best for them.
GingerBrave’s interaction with Smarty is.. interesting. to say the least, especially considering that they are both siblings
GingerBrave is very, and i mean VERY sympathetic for Smarty, not empathic, because he seriously DOESN’T KNOW how to help them and first berry.
However, GingerBrave recognises on how much Smarty Deeply cares for First Berry Cookie, and finds it hopeful that one day smarty no longer needs to live in a world with little to no outside information.
This entire story is a hit in the face and the gut because it highlights on how GingerBrave is still a teenager, helping the first witch’s be aware of whats happening, helping his younger siblings be aware of what’s happening and it could be heartbreaking for them.
This story is definitely not like the other stories, in which the issues of the first witches can be as simple as being careless or the fear of being left alone, or even the fear of having nothing left behind.
But First Berry’s story is a mixture of all in including it being portrayed as OCD, and it’s being treated as something dangerous and isolating, rather something that can be fixed with one easy solution. and it greatly affects smarty.
GingerBrave definitely wanted to bond over with Smarty and wishes to spend more time, Smarty could barely feel the same way.
i genuinely hope in the future we get to see more content between GingerBrave and Smarty, and them having a more positive bond than before </3
Overall, Smarty is a very interesting character that should be more well known in the fandom and i really hope this post actually gets more people interested into witch’s castle.
