Homemade Lava Lamp - Activity/Answer

Hey, like we’ve said to the last two anon self-care kit asks, for the Shape of Water anon, yours is going to take a bit, so here’s a little something to hold you over:

It’s instructions on how to make a ‘lava lamp’ at home. The supplies are cheap and the process is easy, and you don’t need any heat or electricity for it.

Though if we might add to it - we’d suggest using mineral oil instead of vegetable, as it’s colorless. You could also simply do the oil/colored water mixture in a closed bottle of some kind and skip adding the tablets, and just shake it up/turn it over when you want to watch it. If you put it in a little thing (empty spray bottle, maybe?), it can go on your desk and be a good toy for fidgeting.

We have a hunch you probably like water- or liquid-themed things, so. Thought you might enjoy this. :)

Roleplaying Games For Self-Expression - Activity/Game

If you’d like a more interactive way to express your identity (this can be especially useful for plural folks, as not everyone in the group might get the time to be out and about and interact with the world around them), you might try your hand(s) at a roleplaying game of some sort. There are plenty of PC games, console games, and even handheld and mobile games that allow you to customize a character and do what you want in a fantasy world. And then there are tabletop and pen-and-paper games such as Dungeons and Dragons and Pathfinder (which can each be played in singleplayer, and can be played with headmates, if you’d rather not play with someone you aren’t out to).

If you don’t get a lot of time or opportunity to express your identity or interact with it much, you might find spending time in a fantasy world - simply as your identity - might help you to learn a few things about yourself. What you would do in various situations. Things you like or dislike. It can also help you do things you’d like to try, but perhaps simply can’t do in everyday life. Think of it as a way of feeling out unlimited possibilities. Many people find it quite relieving, a way to not have to hide themselves constantly, to get to spend some time as their honest selves; which we honestly think of as a need for those who have to repress themselves for society.

Changing Posting Frequency - Update

Since it seems like a lot of our posts are getting buried before many of the relevant people get a chance to see them, we’re lowering our posting frequency to one per day. We will also answer one ask per day, but we will get around to answering all of them (and feel free to send as many as you want, there’s no limit). We’re not counting updates as posts, so there will still be another post today.

Any playthings for someone who identifies as nonhuman and would love to have something safe to play with without worrying about toxic chemicals? You know, things like those cat toys with the balls inside another ball, and dog chew sticks, but easy to get at any local store, or make homemade, and durable (so human teeth can chew on them). This might be a hard request, but if it possible to find such things, thank you in advance!

Vampire Resource Site - Reference

Sanguinarius.org is a treasure trove of resources and information for vampires, and includes an affiliated message board and support chatroom. Unfortunately, some of the articles have been lost since the founder of the website, Sanguinarius, passed away (God bless her soul, she did so much for so many people and she is dearly missed), but quite a bit remains intact, and it is worth a peruse for vampires and curious folks alike.

Recipes For Twoofing - Food

If you’re having a twoof that you just can’t shake, we have a few simple recipes that you might want to try. We saw these around various vampire/sanguine communities years ago.

-Take a cup of water, insert a tablespoon of salt, boil. When it’s just cool enough to drink, throw it back quickly. We recall that whoever posted about that said it would be such a strong distraction you would forget about twoofing for a good while. (Just please be careful not to burn yourself). We did try this on a smaller scale, and it worked wonders for us.

-A popular recipe we’ve seen around is to take a can of V8 tomato/veggie juice, mix in a cube of beef bouillon (use salt instead if you’re vegan), and 1/4 cup of high-pulp orange juice. We haven’t tried this one, but have seen many people praise it.

-The one we probably love the most is mixing 1 cup of high-pulp orange juice with 1/2 cup of pomegranate juice, 2 tablespoons of canned tomato sauce, and about a teaspoon of salt. Then we warm it up in the microwave for a couple dozen seconds until it’s just warm. That really does the trick for us.

-Occasionally, we’ll use an additional trick. We’ll take whatever blood substitute we’re using at the time and thicken it a bit on the stove with cornstarch. Then, once it’s cooled off to body temperature, we’ll pour a little of it on our arm and lick it off. We find the taste of skin vaguely similar to the taste of blood, and it helps us when we’re having a rough twoof (if you try this, resist biting yourself, please). We’re also not a situation to ask to use another person’s arm as a plate, hahah.

Obviously cooking with animal blood ought to be helpful, but a lot of people have no access to that, no way to store it, or aren’t able to prepare it safely, so we thought these tips might be more helpful. And as a note, animal blood does not taste like human blood; just be aware of that.

But we hope these help! We’ll post more sometime~

Edit: We completely forgot that when we wrote this, we meant to mention that these might not taste good - at all - to people who don’t crave blood. Especially the saltiness. But by all means, you’re welcome to experiment with them if you like, let us know how they turn out for you~

It's good to see positivity for vampires (as my vampiric nature is something I've always been ashamed of), and I also appreciate the link. I do have one question, though - would it be okay for someone like me to join the vampire community without strictly -being- a vampire (or more accurately, without being vampiric in nature alone)?

Yes, the vampire community generally welcomes all kinds, vampiric and non (they are very welcoming of therians and otherkin, for example), and would likely be interested to hear about your experiences, being similar. (We know we would be.) And we were ashamed of our nature for… many years (still are, at times). We know where you’re coming from. Know you’re not alone there. I'm not gonna lie, when I saw the word "twoofing", I freaked out just a smidgen lol. I'm technically not a vampire in the classical sense or anything, but I do experience something of a vampiric nature and have vampiric needs. I'm really disconnected from the vampire community tbh, so finding out there's a word for that was really awesome! Thanks!

We’re glad we could help! ^^ If you’d like, here’s a more formal definition of the term:

“Twoofing: An alternate, less blatant, and less cheesy-sounding, term created as an alternative for the phrase “vamping out”. See “vamping out”.”

“Vamping out: Experiencing an acute flare-up of the thirst. This also involves a change in the person’s manner, breathing, pulse rate, thought patterns, etc., as their body gears up to go out and attempt to satisfy the thirst. This is a real thing, not a fantasy thing, and I won’t let anyone else who does not really have this as a real occurrence claim it; to do so makes a mockery of those of us who really do have to deal with it! (If they don’t have it and they claim it, then I wish it on them; let them have it!).”

Fun fact, ‘twoofing’ came about because it’s how someone who is wearing fangs pronounces the word ‘toothing’ (prosthetic fangs give a little lisp).

Vampires Who Hate Themselves - Affirmation

(Specifically for sang/psi/etc vampires.) We just want to say, we have been there, for a long time... we felt our needs were somehow sinful, or ‘wrong’ in some sense. That we were ‘unnatural’ for having to take blood/energy to stay healthy. Eventually, we came to accept that we weren’t harming anyone. We were moral and careful with our needs, and we’ve come to believe that it isn’t so different from requiring food and water. No one really knows why anyone needs blood or energy, or why only some people do. But if it helps you feel better, and you feed morally (with a consenting donor in the case of a deep feed, from a large crowd and not on one individual in the case of ambient feeding), then what is really wrong with it? You are what you are, and you have a responsibility to care for yourself in a fair way. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Always take care of your health, don’t ignore it just because yours is a little different from common health problems. Embrace yourself and strive to live at your best; you deserve it, no matter what label applies to you. You are as much a person as anyone else.
