There was a proud smile on Merrilyn’s face as she listened Justin’s and Kristofer’s conversation. Even though she knew Kris was a polite child it sort of always made her heart glow when she noticed how Kris was around other people and how mindful he was about things. Kris nodded his head to Justin, smiling widely at him – he definitely was teaching a lot of things to his toys. Merrilyn looked at Justin and smiled softly. “But when you grill you have to know something about the things you are grilling and how long you can keep everything there and how to season them and so on. I have no knowledge of any of those, so I might end up either burning everything or leaving them raw. But I like your suggestion. You can teach me grill and in return maybe I could teach you few recipes of mine?” 

“Now, that sounds like a perfect plan,” Justin agreed with a warm grin in reply. The grill was great, he didn’t mind the food he was able to make from it, but he wanted to expand his abilities if he could. Though, he wouldn’t mind it either if someone else in his life took care of the rest of the cooking and he just stuck to manning the grill. “Now, have you given any thought to what film we’re watching tonight?” he asked, eyes drifting up with a smile towards Merrilyn. There were a lot of Disney movies and he wasn’t sure which one they would be taking on that evening. He assumed whichever it was would be a favorite of Kristofer, which he was perfectly fine with.

Mason was one of those musicians who would only write and record their music, upload onto Spotify or Soundcloud, possibly record a music video and… that was it. The thought of playing to huge crowds and having a thousand eyes staring back at you, was daunting and scary as hell. But as he had becoming close to finishing his next EP, a sense of courage and bravery had washed over him, and he wanted others to hear his songs. How he’d come to be stood in the middle of town was beyond him, and as he looked out to passers by, he started to cave. “Shit…” Mason exhaled, pulling his ukele behind his head. “Come on.. Come on..” He muttered to himself, feeling his heart begin to race faster. Do not have a panic attack right now. “Breath.. It’s fine.. no-one is looking.” Mason told himself, closing his eyes behind his black raybans. Why did he think that he could even do this?

Justin had finished most of his business for the day and was walking through the downtown area of the city in an effort to get himself something to eat for lunch. He had a full slate of meetings ahead of him after lunch, so he needed something to keep himself going. His hands were in his pockets as he walked, eyebrow lifting when he saw a guy looking incredibly anxious in the middle of the rather crowded area. “You alright?” he asked as he got closer, pausing momentarily just to be sure. He wasn’t sure what the case was, but he felt it necessary at least to check before leaving the guy there to flounder.

Kris looked at his dinosaurs with a slight frown on his face but then he started to smile and looked at Justin. “They see what we are doing, they are patient.” Kristofer was sure the dinos would be fine while they’d eat. Merrilyn just smiled at her son and once Justin had taken the food she put a bit of everything on Kris’ plate and then on her own. Merrilyn nodded at Justin’s question and before she even got to reply anything Kris already commented with: “Mommy magic!” which made Merrilyn laugh. “Yes, mommy magic indeed”, she agreed and looked at Justin again. “I’ve never gotten involved with a grill that much, so most likely I’d be horrible with that.”

“You must be teaching them well,” Justin smiled back at the boy. For a boy his age to know anything at all about patience, it said a lot about the way he was being raised and he was more impressed with each interaction they had. Chuckling towards the two, he nodded his head, fully believing that mommy magic was a thing. He’d seen many a mother do incredible things that men could only watch with wonder. “No? It’s about the easiest thing I can imagine. You put some seasoning on meat and then you just...toss it on there and wait.” He was a pretty big grill guy when he didn’t have food being catered in for dinner. “I’ll have to teach you sometime, grill out some vegetables and steaks, maybe chicken or something.”

“He is”, Kris said proudly and once his mother said it was time for dinner Kris started to place every dinosaur into one neat row right next to the bathroom door, so now they wouldn’t be on anyone’s way and they would look all nice just standing there and waiting to be played with. Merrilyn smiled at Justin’s comment and before she even got to reply to him Kris was already doing that. “They’ll wait here, we can play after”, he promised patting Justin’s leg to make sure he wouldn’t feel bad they wouldn’t get to play now. Merrilyn made sure all they needed was on the table and once she was sure nothing was missing she finally sat down herself as well. She looked at Justin and couldn’t help but smile at his compliments. “Thank you”, she said and gestured Justin to take food first. “And I can tell you a secret. Making all this took less than an hour. It looks like I used more time on them, but as a mother you have your ways of making things look more complicated than they were.” 

“Perfect. Later will work just as well. As long as the dinosaurs don’t get lonely, I think we’ll be just fine,” Justin chuckled, inclining his head towards the young boy gratefully. The kid was cute, cuter than most of the children Justin had dealt with in the past, which he assumed was all up to how well Merrilyn had raised him. With his seat taken, Justin happily filled his plate with a sampling of everything that was on the table, waiting politely until both of the other two had their share. “Less than an hour, really? That’s incredible. It looks like it would have taken me ages to get anything close to this on the table. I’m only really handy with a grill. That, at least, I can manage,” he said with a half laugh.

The thought that she would be able to help design her own perfect working environment was an appealing one, to say the least. With Justin’s money at her disposal, she would have full freedom to design it perfectly to ensure that she would have every chance to avoid being caught. “Well, Mr. Thompson, I believe that we do. Get the paperwork drawn up and I’ll stop back by when it’s ready, we can get started.” It was exciting, honestly, to have a chance to get back into the working field. Being off, while having some merits, just didn’t hold the same appeal as having some purpose in life. 

The deal done, Justin sat up from his chair, moving around to the other side of his desk to extend a hand towards Danica. A handshake to seal the deal and then he could get right to work on the contract. “I’m looking forward to working with you, Ms. Durand. If anything comes up where you need my assistance getting settled, please reach out. We’re willing to do whatever we can to ensure an easy transition.”

Kristofer nodded his head eagerly, smiling happily when Justin agreed that his favorite dinosaurs were good ones. “Yup, the big one”, he repeated and glanced towards his mother, smiling at her. When a question followed the boy looked back to Justin. “Everything!” he replied and picked up t-rex. “Sometimes he is the police, sometimes he is the fireman, sometimes he sells apples, sometimes he’s the dad and sometimes he just says raw raw raw.” At this point you could hear a soft chuckle coming from Merrilyn’s direction, but she didn’t say anything to her son’s words. Merri tasted the food, was happy with it and decided it was time to serve it. “Alright you two, time to put the dinos aside for a moment and sit down to eat”, Merrilyn said as she started to carry the foods on the table. “I was going to make roast”, she said to Justin, “But this little man here told me he wants chicken instead. So maybe the roast will happen on your next visit.” She set the pot of rice next to the pan with the chickens and brought the last pan with grilled cauliflower on the table and the bowl of side salad. “So technically this is chicken with curry rice accompanied with grilled cauliflowers. And then there’s salad and some yogurt with coriander, cucumber, a bit of lemon juice and salt.”

Justin could only smile and laugh at the boy’s enthusiasm. It was always fascinating to him how wild a young child’s imagination could be. Justin himself had lost that idyllic mindset long in the past. “Well, that all sounds pretty exciting. He looks like a pretty good toy,” Justin hummed out, head twisting to look towards Merrilyn when she spoke. “Oh, must we? I suppose we’ll just have to play some more later.” He clambered back up from the floor, stretching out before heading to the table. Everything smelled amazing and looked even better and he was more than just a little impressed with the whole spread. He wasn’t a terrible cook himself, but he never did anything this great. Mostly, he grilled. “This is...absolutely incredible looking. Where do you find the time to cook like this? I mean, you have work, Kristofer, everything in between...this is amazing, Merrilyn.” He was more than a little impressed and his eyes had grown wide as he sat down at the table to look at all the food.

“That’s good to hear”, she smiled, put the flowers in the vase and poured water in it. She set the flowers in the middle of the kitchen table and looked at Kristoger who was beaming once he realised Justin liked dinosaurs as well. He put the pile of dinosaurs on the floor to search his favorite one. “This one!” he finally said and showed his favorite –  Stegosaurus – and picked up another dinosaur as well. “And this one!” He gave the Parasaurolophus to Justin and then the Stegosaurus as well. “They are cute!” Kristofer smiled widely and after a short moment he started to search another dinosaur from the pile. “And this is mommy’s favorite!” he put the Apatosaurus in Justin’s hands as well. “Mommy’s favorite is the biggest one.” Merrilyn just watched at Kristofer and Justin in silence with a warm smile on her lips. Though she couldn’t just look at them for too long because she had to take care of the food, so she walked back to the stove to stir the foods a bit.

Happily, Justin accepted the dinosaurs from the boy, looking them over with as much interest as he could muster up in his facial features. He figured that kids reacted better when you were engaged and he was making sure to appear so. “Well, these are all excellent options,” he agreed, the toys in his hands as he chuckled. “Oh, the biggest one, yeah? Good to know.” He laughed at the comment, his smile growing as he set the dinosaurs back down to the ground. It was cute watching Kristofer play with all of them, clearly quite proud of the collection he had accumulated. “Now, the real question is, what games do you play with all these guys?”

While money wasn’t a concern for her, there was a lot that she could do if her previous salary doubled. Immediately, she leaned in a bit more, her eyebrow lifting as Justin started to discuss the things she would need to do for the job. It was quite possibly right up her alley. On the legit side, she could point to the investment part of the job, but it was everything else he said that sparked her genuine interest. “That…all sounds like something I can do,” she replied softly, head tilting to the side with a smile. “Would I get my own office and…a safe space to work from?” She wanted to take it up, wanted to get back into the game again, but she would need some guarantees that she would stay this side of the bars if anything were to go awry. 

The moment she started leaning in closer, Justin figured he had won her over and gotten the deal done. He had to stop himself from smiling widely, the accomplishment one he had been eager to get nailed down once he’d heard Danica was in the area. “Of course. Fully furnished office in one of our buildings, completely private networks...to ensure speed of it all. Anything you need, we can make sure it’s provided,” he promised. He’d admit he didn’t know what all went into setting up an office built for what she did to ensure there would be minimal chance of being caught, but he’d trust her judgement and get it done whatever it took. “So, Miss Durand...I take it we have ourselves a deal?’

“I’m good!” the boy replied causing his mother to smile. “I’m doing well”, Merri replied giving Justin a smile. “How are you? Hopefully not over-stressed by work.” Kristofer grinned at Merri’s words. “No stress here!” he said clapping his hands together and rushed to his room, clearly to get something. Merrilyn couldn’t help but chuckle and shake her head softly. Soon Justin would be covered in toys.. She headed towards the kitchen, glanced at the pots and pants on the stove and knew there wasn’t really much to do anymore.  “I think I’ve already got everything done. Kris set the table and all.” Merrilyn nodded towards the table that definitely had been set, but the job wasn’t done the best possible way, but hey, it id have all that was needed for eating and if you’d ask Kristofer he’d be extremely proud of what he had done. Merri set Justin’s bringings on the kitchen counter and opened one cabinet to get a vase for the flowers. By this time Kristofer rushed back and almost ran straight into Justin’s legs as he expected them to be still in the living room. “Oop!” the boy said taking a step back and then offering his toy dinosaurs towards the man. “Look!”

“Wonderful to hear. I’m doing alright myself. Not...terribly stressed this week. I think we’ve finally found a perfect hire for one of our positions, so that’s exciting,” he shrugged, not sure how much to even share. Business talk was all he was used to, so he didn’t know quite what too much was when it came to a more social setting. He looked around at everything, smiling at the set table that the young boy had managed to put together. “Now that is a beautifully set table. He’s...really impressive for his age,” Justin said with a low whistle. It wasn’t perfect, maybe, but it was incredible all things considered that she could even get the boy to help with something like that. Hearing the patter of feet coming his way again, Justin held a hand out to help catch Kristofer and stop him so he didn’t fall over, stooping down to one knee as the boy brought his toys out. “Wow, look at these. I had one just like this guy when I was a kid, it was my favorite,” he chuckled, holding up one of the toy raptors. “Which one is your favorite?”

Since they had made the deal of dinner and movies Merrilyn had either been cleaning the apartment – not that it ever was that dirty or in a chaotic state in general – or trying to decide what to cook. In the end it has pretty much been Kristofer who made the decision what they’d be eating, but Merrilyn was quite positive Justin would enjoy the food too. She was just about to get everything done when she heard a knock on the door. She quickly wiped her hands and headed to the door. She opened it with a smile and her smile only grew bigger when she saw the flowers and Justin. “Hi”, she replied and gestured him to come in. “It’s wonderful to see you too.” Merri took the flowers and the rest of the things Justin had brought with him. “Kris”, she said looking over her shoulder. “Come and say hi.” It didn’t take many seconds for the boy to appear in the living room and he gave an excited wave at Justin. “Hi!”

His smile remained as he was invited inside and he helped carry in some of the stuff to make sure her hands weren’t overly full. Following her lead inside, he set everything else in his arms down, turning when he heard the small patter of feet coming in to the living room. “Hello, Kristofer. How are you both doing this evening?” he opened the question up to mother and son both, eager to settle in and relax for the night. It had been a long week at work - but, what week at work wasn’t long when it came to his life? - and he was ready to have a nice evening that he could just let himself feel at ease for a change. “Is there any other set-up that you need help with?” He wasn’t sure if there was much he could help with, but he was willing to do so if there was anything else that needed to get done.

Justin wasn’t wrong, Danica was easily the best at what she did, but that didn’t erase the criminal record from her background by any means. Businesses were looking to hire people they felt they could trust. In this case, however, it just so happened that her particular brand was exactly the thing that Justin and whatever companies he held were looking for. “Okay…I’m interested,” she mused, a clear sparkle in her eyes. Being paid to do the work she’d done in the past had been fun, but it was her side ventures that had always been the most rewarding. Finding a way to meld the two jobs would be perfect for her, illegal as perhaps some of it would be. “Talk numbers with me…and duties as best as you can.”

Catching her interest had been the easy part. Finding a way to explain what the job would entail would be another task entirely, but she didn’t seem opposed to whatever it was coming her way. It was clear that she’d never had qualms breaking the law and while she likely didn’t want to risk ending up in jail again, Justin hoped the draw of it all would counteract that possibility. “We’ll double your previous salary,” he said simply, assuming that would be numbers enough to entice her in. “Duties would fall in line with things you’ve done in the past. We need someone that can make sound investments...and someone that knows their way around a computer. We have a lot of funds to move and need a discrete way to do it. And of course we’re always open to looking into research projects on our competition.”

After scheduling the dinner and movie night with Merrilyn, Justin had been looking forward to it all week. He had picked up a dessert, as well as a few premade sides to bring over, and had driven to her apartment to start the evening. With the food in one hand and a bouquet of flowers in the other, he headed up to her place, knocking on the door loudly enough to alert her to his presence there. He smiled when the door opened, holding up his offerings. “Hello, Merrilyn. Lovely to see you again,” he greeted. @merrilyngilmore

The extension of an offer for an interview had thrown Danica for a loop. With her record, it was an utter surprise that anyone was even remotely interested in going through the process with her. It was that reason alone that made her decide to give it a chance. Anyone willing to hire a criminal probably had something interesting up their sleeve as an offer. Dressing in her best, Danica showed up early, getting escorted back immediately to Justin’s office. “You make a compelling argument, Mr. Thompson, how could I possibly have refused?” she asked as she took a seat, arms folding in front of her. “Now, I have to ask…why me?” The tone she asked the question with said more than the words themselves. She knew how to be discreet and talk around what was really going on when necessary and she had to assume this was one of those times where it was necessary.

Considering Danica’s circumstances, it probably was an intriguing offer to get. To the public eye, Justin had a reputable business venture, one that would probably never hire a criminal. On the inside, though, that was all they really were. “Why you? You’re the best at what you do and I only want the best on my staff,” he mused, fingers drumming at the desk in front of him as he leaned forward. “I’m looking for someone who is willing to take risks and get things done, both of which you have a proven track record for....and of course, discretion is always appreciated.” He was choosing his words carefully, his smile showing that there was more to the job than just the basics.

The moment that word had broken in his office that there was someone new in town that could prove useful to his business, Justin had made it a point to start courting them. Danica’s name was well known in rings like his for what she had managed to accomplish and Justin could only assume she was out of work now. Her skills, mixed with his business talents, could go a long way in his industry and he wanted to nail down that business relationship before she had time to get back on the straight and narrow. Luckily, he doubted that would happen. People with a knack for crime like she had simply didn’t go straight. When his office door opened and she was shown in by his assistant, Justin let his lips curl to a charming smile. “Ah, Miss Durand. I’m glad you chose to come today. Please, sit,” he welcomed her, spreading his arms out to the several various chairs in his office. @danicadurand

“I’m looking forward to that.” Maybe she did sound a bit too eager to get a call, but she couldn’t help herself. She knew it would be a fun day and Kris would love it as well. “Lets say we’ll combine few things to that day – I’ll make the dinner, and we’ll watch Disney movies and eat some snacks like popcorn while watching. But be ready to play with some dinosaurs with Kris, because pretty much no one can leave the apartment until he has shown all his dinos to the guest and made them play with him.” Merrilyn had a feeling Justin wouldn’t mind a moment of dinosaurs, but it was good to warn him about it anyway. “But you are right, if you get a bit overboard with your bringings I’m sure everything will get eaten anyway at some point.

“Well, that sounds just perfect to me. Dinner, movies, and dinos? Hard to think of a better combination than that,” Justin chuckled, not minding the addition to the get together at all. If that’s even what it was. At this point, it felt more like they were going on a date, one where Merrilyn now felt comfortable allowing her son into the mix. “But, yes, excellent. It’s a date, then. I’ll give you a ring later, we can nail down the exact time.” He supposed it was time to get back to work that morning, though he was enjoying himself completely. At least they had a follow up date set almost for when he could see her again.

“I’m sure you aren’t truly a dummy”, she admitted, knowing very well that Justin definitely was a wise man and even if he didn’t know much about children he surely would learn quickly. So he definitely was far away from being dumb. “That sounds wonderful”, she said, her smile growing even brighter than it already was. “Next week works fine. Just let me know the day and I’ll double check there isn’t anything else on that day. Most likely there isn’t anything that can’t be moved to another date.” Probably the only thing there might be was something like her sisters just busting in from the door requiring some food. So Merrilyn would just have to tell them no visits on that day. “Desserts and side dishes would be nice as well, especially popcorn. Just don’t go overboard with those? After all, there’re only two and a half of us eating it all.”

It seemed easy enough for Justin to pin down at least one day where he could set aside some time to get in touch and make the plans work out. “Perfect. By the end of the day, I’ll reach out and let you know which day is best. My assistant is the one who keeps my calendar, I’ll be honest.” He chuckled at that, shrugging his shoulders. As organized a man as he was, it was far easier for him to let someone else tend to all of his specific meetings and times and where he needed to be on any given day. “Popcorn, perfect. I can do that. I’ll make sure not to go overboard, though if I do, I’m sure you’ll have visitors to share with throughout the week as well, no?” It seemed like she had people over a lot, even if just her sisters.

“Oh so much so. I mean.. I’m pretty sure if I ever have kids they’ll prefer her to me.” she laughed lightly “She’s just the best person I know. She brings out the good in everyone and everything.” 

“Now that sounds amazing.. I am totally going for that.” she smiled and looked at him. “Thank you.. for this.”

“Are kids in the future for you?” he asked, not sure what Tati’s status was when it came to her love life. “I can see that, though. She’s...very good for that. Nicest person I’ve probably ever met in my life.” And that wasn’t an exaggeration, either.

“Of course, though. Like I said, it’s really no trouble. And lunch is on me, so don’t even worry about it.”
