We Are Safer Scene

We are Safer Scene. We’re a brand new organization whose primary goal is to help create a safer, more inclusive alternative music scene. Recently, high-profile instances of harassment, abuse and other harmful behaviors have driven us to take action in order to create a new kind of community. As fans of and participants in the scene, we are dedicated to helping create a diverse, educated and safe environment in which people can enjoy the music that they love. We will make an effort to reach out to women and to LGBT+ members of the music community, who too often are pushed to the side or ignored. With your help, we can make positive changes and give a platform to those who seek equal partnership in this music community that we all care so much about.

It’s been a 24-year struggle of confronting my physical and emotional insecurities. Like most girls my age, especially girls of color, I grew up hating everything about myself before I even started junior high. Everything about me was wrong, from the way I dressed to my eyebrows and even my name. Everything about me is still wrong to a lot of people. I don’t know at what point in my adolescence I realized that simply not giving a fuck and loving myself anyway could change everything for me. It’s such a basic solution to most self-esteem issues that a lot of people don’t even believe me when I suggest it.

Let Us Live: The criminalization of black girls starts early; they face higher rates of suspension compared to their non-black counterparts, which begins and upholds the school to prison pipeline. Showing up for incarcerated black women means allowing space for us to live authentically. I always tell people I embrace all my labels. So when people say I’m a black artist I’m like, “Yep.” I’m also a feminist artist, I’m an artist from Chicago, I’m a female artist. All of that’s there. Some people like to be called just an artist, but to me that’s more like erasure. I feel like it’s better if you can just deal with all the different things you are, instead of trying to erase all the categories.

I believe in karma and bioenergetics. I’ve witnessed karma a few times, and I wholeheartedly believe that whatever energy you put into an environment will produce in your results. I love people who go out of their way to put positive energy into the room. I once had a coworker who was a devout Christian. She never judged me about what I believed, nor did she try to foist her beliefs onto me. She respected me and I respected her. She was one of the nicest people I worked with and I truly admired her efforts to make every work shift a positive one and putting positive vibrations into the universe. She would write down a bible quote and put it in her pocket. She would say a prayer for herself and everyone.
