A Closer Look: Chicago Bears Cobe Bryant out for 8-10 weeks, and what’s next?

After Chicago Bears safety Cobe Bryant suffered a knee injury that will sideline him for 8-10 weeks, he was carted off the field, suffering a bruised bone and a small fracture.

The fracture does not require surgery.

The Bears signed the Super Bowl champion to a three-year/$40 million contract during free agency, as he would line up next to first-round draft pick Dillion Thileman.

So far, the Bears have Cam Lewis to back up Bryant. Lewis spent his entire career with the Buffalo Bills, splitting snaps between defense and special teams

One question is, would it hurt the Bears if they signed someone for the time being?

Chicago ranked 29th overall in total defense, one of the weakest links during their 2025 campaign.

Their three biggest defensive players, Kevin Byard, CJ Gardner Johnson, and Nashon Wright, all signed with new teams on one-year deal.

Gardner Johnson was a late-season addition and worked out for the Bears, racking up two interceptions, three sacks, and 51 total tackles.

We know Ben Johnson can make great last-minute additions, so it wouldn’t hurt if they signed someone for the right price, just in case Bryant could be out a little longer than expected, but for now, Lewis would be filling the role

San Francisco 49ers have had another weapon to add to their West Coast offense, while waving someone from their secondary.

According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, San Francisco has signed eighth-year running back Khalil Herbert.

The 49ers also waived tenth-year veteran cornerback Eli Apple. Apple spent 2025 with the 49ers, only playing in two games. Before playing 4 games for the Los Angeles Chargers, playing in total of 6 games for 48 snaps.

Apple’s most notable time in his NFL career was with the Cincinnati Bengals, where he played two seasons, recording two interceptions, 98 tackles, and a trip to Super Bowl LVI.

In his 10 years in the NFL, Apple never stayed with a team longer than two and a half seasons playing with the New York Giants, where he was drafted in 2016, played in 2016-2018, before being traded to the New Orleans Saints in 2018-2019, then singing with the Carolina Panthers in 2020, then Cincinnati Bengals in 2021-2023, then signing one year deals with the Miami Dolphins, Los Angeles Chargers, and San Francisco 49ers.

Over 10 seasons, Apple racked up six interceptions, three forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries, and 384 tackles.

Herbert signed with the New York Jets last season, playing in only seven games in 2025, rushing for 52 yards on 16 carries, while hauling one catch for four yards.

The 5-foot-9 running back most notably played for the Chicago Bears, being drafted in the sixth round by the Windy City in 2021 where he racked up 1,791 rushing yards, nine touchdowns on 377 carries,, Herbert spent four seasons with Chicago before being traded during the 2024 season to the Cincinnati Bengals, only playing eight games, rushing for 114 yards on 28 carries with the Bengals before being released in the offseason of 2025.

In total, Herbert rushed for 1,957 yards on 416 carries and nine touchdowns,

The Arizona Cardinals gave quarterback Jacoby Brissett a new contract after holding out, and now he went from earning $5.5 million to $ 15.5 million this year, for a total worth up to $21 million, including incentives.

The biggest question is, did the Cardinals give in by giving Brissett a new contract?

“No, they [Arizona Cardinals] gave in. Don’t understand this; he [Brissett] didn’t have leverage. They had signed Gardner Minshew; they drafted Carson Beck. Yeah, they didn’t really have leverage.” Cheeze stated on All Gloves Off Sports Media. “There’s nothing you did to say all that he elevated them so much, so I think they gave in. I don’t think I need to do this, but I think it was just like OK, let’s just get them in camp. Let’s give him give him something. It doesn’t make any sense.”

Brissett threw for 23 touchdowns, eight interceptions and 3,366 yards for the Cardinals in 2025, after taking over for Kyler Murray after Murray suffered a season-ending foot injury. Despite putting up decent stats, Arizona finished 3-15, and 1-10 under Brissett.

It seems in time that Beck would become the starter eventually, so was giving Brissett $21 million for one year worth it? After all, he may not even start the entire season, depending on how the season goes. There are starting quarterbacks who don't make over $20 million a year.

If Brissett loses his starting job to either Minshew or Beck, it would make the Cardinals or any other team in the NFL think twice about giving someone more than $15 million to play at least one season as quarterback.

Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson has had his share of quarterbacks, but he made it clear who the best one is.

Before he named the best quarterback he's played with, he named another quarterback that he played with, but this quarterback didn't even have 10 starts for the Bears; he did win a Super Bowl.

"Caleb's the best quarterback I've had since maybe Nick Foles if you want to go back that far. Just as far as slinging it, he's doing his thing.” Joylon Johnson said via Brad Biggs on X (Twitter) You can see the accuracy. You can see the confidence throwing the ball in tight windows."

Johnson has played six seasons in the NFL, and since 2020, the Bears have seen their fair share of a revolving door of starting quarterbacks.

Nick Foles played with the Bears from 2021-2022 and made eight complete starts, going 3-5, throwing 11 touchdowns, eight interceptions, and 2,102 yards.

Chicago has had seven starting quarterbacks since Johnson was drafted by the Bears in 2020. That includes two first-round quarterbacks: Mitchell Trubiskey, who was drafted in 2017 and played with the Bears from 2017-2021, and Justin Fields, who was drafted by the Bears in 2021 and played from 2021-2023; other notable quarterbacks include Andy Dalton, Trevor Siemian, Tyson Bagent, and Nathan Peterman.

In his first two seasons, Caleb Williams threw for 47 touchdowns and 13 interceptions and broke the Bears franchise record for most passing yards in a season with 3,942 yards in 2025.

The Bears made their first playoff appearance last season since 2018 and secured a playoff win for the first time since 2011. Chicago also scored the third-most points in franchise history with 414 points. The future looks to be bright in Chicago.

Buffalo Bills’ C.J. Gardner-Johnson avoids major injury.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson seems to have dodged a major scare.

According to ESPN, Adam Schefter reported that Buffalo Bills' Gardner-Johnson suffered a left calf strain after MRI testing was done.

The eight-year veteran was carted off the field today during training camp, grabbing his left calf in what seemed like an Achilles injury.

It’s unclear if he will play in the Bills' first preseason game vs the Carolina Panthers, but he should be ready for the Week 1 matchup vs the Houston Texans.

The 5-foot-11 safety signed with the Bills in a one-year $5.5 million contract in free agency, after playing for the Houston Texans and the Chicago Bears last season.

Fans remain concerned after videos of Cardinals’ Marvin Harrison Jr. dropping passes in training camp.

Last season, Marvin Harrison Jr. caught a career-low 41 passes for 608 yards and four touchdowns; however, he did only play in 12 games.

He also had a habit of dropping passes, and fast forward to training camp, fans remain concerned.

Videos have surfaced on social media of Harrison Jr. dropping passes in training camp, putting the former first-round pick in question for the season.

The former Ohio State standout had a decent rookie season in 2024, hauling in 61 passes for 885 yards and eight touchdowns, before taking a decline last season; however, he still averaged 14 yards per catch.

This is training camp, a perfect time to shake off the rust before the real thing happens in September, but if Harrison Jr. continues to struggle, they may go another route.

The Cardinals play the Carolina Panthers in the Hall of Fame Game this Sunday, and it’s unclear if Cardinals head coach Mike LeFleur will let his starters play, including Marvin Harrison Jr.

The Chicago Bears start training camp today, which means one of their star defenders will be added to the PUP list.

According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, Kyler Gordon will start training camp on the PUP list. Gordon only played three games last season due to a nagging soft tissue injury that sidelined him for most of 2025. The fifth-year veteran has not recorded an interception since 2023.

Other Bears players on the PUP list are Ozzy Traplio, who may miss the start of the season after rupturing his patellar tendon during the 31-27 Wild Card victory over the Green Bay Packers; Noah Sewell and Sherman Turner both tore their ACLs, and just like Trapilo, Sewell’s status for the start of the season is uncertain.

Chicago’s fifth-round draft pick Keyshaun Elliot is also on the PUP list with a quad injury.

In total, the Bears have four defensive players who will be on the Physically Unable to Perform list (PUP)

This hurts Chicago’s defense, as they ranked 29th in total defense; if more injuries pile up, it could slow them down heading into the season.

However, in good news, linebacker TJ Edwards is not on the PUP list, but instead is in the NFI as he deals with a muscle strain.

At the time, it’s unclear if Gordon will be ready for the Bears' Week 1 matchup vs. the Carolina Panthers in September, and if he misses Week 1, it would be the sixth straight regular-season game he's missed due to injury.

Four 49ers players, including George Kittle start training camp on the PUP list

As training camp in the Bay Area starting today, four key players of the San Francisco 49ers will start on the PUP list, while two All-Pro defensive stars will not be added to the list.

Nick Bosa tore his ACL in the Week 3 matchup vs the Arizona Cardinals, and Fred Warner dislocated his ankle, which required season-ending surgery in Week 6 vs the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; both are not on the PUP list.

George Kittle (achilles), Mikel Williams (ACL), Issac Guerendo (pectoral), and Alfred Collins (shoulder) will start on the PUP list.

Kittle, tore his achilles after playing in 11 games in 2025, catching 57 passes, for 628 yards, and seven touchdowns, and is uncertain if the two time All- Pro will be ready for Week 1 matchup in Melbourne, Australia vs the Los Angeles Rams, but according to the 49ers general manager John Lynch said that Kittle’s rehab is coming “tremendously” and is “doing everything possible to be ready for Week 1”

If Kittle is able to go, the 49ers may turn to their other tight ends: Jake Tongues, who caught 34 passes for 293 yards and five touchdowns; and Luke Farwell, who had 11 receptions for two touchdowns and 85 yards.

San Francisco 49ers head coach suffered substantial injuries after being in a car accident on July 14th, according to the team's X (Twitter) account.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Kyle Shanahan’s car collided with an SUV, and he suffered a broken nose, three broken ribs, a severe concussion, and over 40 stitches on his face. While the injuries are significant, they are non-life-threatening.

No drugs or alcohol appear to be a factor; the other driver was not injured, and no one was cited, according to Palo Alto Lt. Nicholas Martinez

Shanahan is recovering at home, but doctors won’t clear him to participate in any activities until the concussion symptoms clear. The 49ers start their training camp today.

In the meantime, the 49ers announced that assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foster will handle all head coaching duties.

The 49ers' first preseason game is Aug 13 vs the Tennessee Titans; their first regular-season game is overseas in Melbourne, Australia, vs the Los Angeles Rams on Sep 10. Hopefully Shanahan will be cleared by then to participate in all team activities

Is DeAndre Hopkins retiring?

The Future Hall of Famer is currently a free agent after spending the last season with the Baltimore Ravens, where he played all 17 games and caught 22 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns, finishing his 13th season in the league.

Currently, while not signed with a team, he is helping out a team in a potential/coaching role.

According to Mike Ressis, Hopkins is visiting the New England Patriots and is considering a coaching career.

“Him and I talked, and he asked if he could come hang out for a couple of days, and be around the coaches, and be around the personnel department," Vrabel stated in his press conference. "I called the league and made sure that that was gonna be OK. Then I invited him back, and that’s where he's been the last couple days, and he'll be here for the next couple days."

New England has added additions to their wide receiver room, with the trade to get three-time Pro Bowl and Super Bowl Champion A.J. Brown, and signing Romeo Dobbs in free agency from the Packers, and looking to add a future Hall of Fame wide receiver on their coaching staff could boost their offense.

Hopkins is 34, and if he were to sign with a team for his 14th season in the NFL, he would be the oldest active wide receiver. That currently belongs to Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Davante Adams, who is 33.

If the 6-foot-1 wide receiver were to retire, he would tally up 1,006 catches, 13295 yards, and 85 touchdowns, while catching passes from 15 different quarterbacks. This includes Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Kyler Murray, and Deshaun Watson.

Ben Johnson could hit a milestone this season.

Before Johnson, there was Matt Eberflus, who was hired in 2022 after the Bears fired Matt Nagy. Eberflus was the first head coach general manager Ryan Poles had hired, and it was a disaster from the start.

Eberflus finished with a 14-32 head coaching record and became the first Bears head coach in their 100+ years to be fired mid-season.

Johnson finished his first season at 11-6, and securing their first playoff win since 2011, and now entering his second season, the second year head coach could also pass two other Bears head coaches who were hired in the 21st century, Marc Trestman finished with a 13-19 record while coaching the ears from 2013-2014, and John Fox finished with a 14-34 record from 2015-2017.

If Johnson could repeat last season, he would move up to 11th in most wins by a coach in NFL history.

ESPN Analytics stated that the Detroit Lions have the best chance to win the NFC North with a 38% chance.

On Monday, ESPN Analytics stated that the Detroit Lions have the best odds to win the NFC North with a 38% chance.

The following are listed: the Packers at 33%, the Bears at 19%, and the Vikings at 10%. Leaving the Packers and Lions clear frontrunners for the division title compared to Chicago and Minnesota.

Detroit finished 9-8 last season and was in last place in their division, going 2-4, with being swept by the Packers and the Vikings; Detroit's only two wins came from sweeping the Bears for the second year in a row.

But how does a last-place team manage to almost have a 40% chance of winning their division?

The Lions weren't a bad team. Finishing last place in your division with a winning record is hard to do, and that’ s what the Lions did. When you finish last place, you get to play last-place teams the next season.

Detroit will play the Tennessee Titans and the Arizona Cardinals this year; this follows with two teams from the AFC East division, the Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets, as well as the uncompetitive NFC South division.

Jared Goff was second in passing yards with 4,654, with 34 passing touchdowns, and was fifth in the league with a completion percentage of 68%, while the Lions offense was ranked 5th last season.

Goff and the Lions will enter the season with one of the most favorable schedules based on opponents' win-loss percentages in 2025, at 0.467. If they can make the right moves this season, every game will be winnable.

One way to help keep your leg in good shape is to do gymnastics.

For New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo, that might scare people, as the second-year running back is coming off a gruesome season-ending ankle injury that required surgery.

However, it seems that he looks to be doing fine walking around, jumping, and trying to do a backflip

During Fanatics Fest, the Giants running back attempted to do a backflip after showing everyone his scar from his surgery, but failed to stick the landing on the Filip, promptly falling on his butt.

This wasn’t well received on social media, and everyone posted their reactions amid the failed backflip.

It’s not the first time Skattebo has been seen at a public event after his surgery. In November, he was seen at a WWE event and was seen pushing a wrestler.

Now, it’s not saying that when you're injured, you should lay up in the house until you're completely healed, but to try to do a stun in front of a live audience post-surgery, and with football season on the rise, may not be a good look.

Bears' Colston Loveland "Only everyone is talking about the Packers."

Colston Loveland knows a thing or two about being a part of some of the oldest rivalries in football.

Before being drafted by the Chicago Bears in 2025, Loveland played for the University of Michigan from 2022-2024, and playing Michigan means you play Ohio State every year, one of the oldest and most heated rivalries in college football.

Now, fast-forward to 2025: Loveland is drafted by the Chicago Bears with the 10th overall pick. Being drafted by Chicago means you play the Green Bay Packers twice a year, a matchup that is the oldest and most heated rivalry in all of professional sports.

In an interview with ‘Bussin with the Boys’ with Taylor Lewan and Will Compton, Loveland was asked if the Michigan/Ohio State rivalry was comparable to the Bears/Packers rivalry.

“As far as like in the building, what are you doing to beat Ohio State every day? That was where it was in Michigan; every TV, everything. That’s how it is at the Bears.” Loveland said via Bussin' with the Boys Podcast. “It’s everyone is only talking about the Packers; owners like you know this. You can’t go a day without talking about them [Packers] talk about beating them, talk about the bad things, so this is very comparable there, I’d say.”

Loveland has had a big impact in the rivalry; in three games against the Packers, the former Michigan tight end caught 15 passes for 196 yards.

It’s no surprise that Chicago only talks about is the Packers. Since December 2024, the Bears are 3-2 in the last five meetings, including a 31-27 NFC Wild Card victory over the Packers after trailing 21-3 at halftime, which is a big accomplishment from what even seen over the recent years.

Since 1992, Green Bay is 52-18, including a decisive 21-14 NFC Championship win in 2011..In fact, from the 2011 NFC title game through 2023, the Packers are 21-5, prompting future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers to say he owns the Bears.

This included an 11-game losing streak Chicago endured from September 2019 to December 2024, as the Bears had not swept the Packers since 2007.

One question would remain: Can Chicago repeat or do better than 2025, especially against Green Bay? After all, Bears head coach Ben Johnson said, “There's no building back from this. “

Green Bay currently leads the series over Chicago 108-98-6. there first matchup in 2026 in Week 5 at Lambeau Field.

Could the Arizona Cardinals name their starting quarterback during training camp?

As we get closer to the Arizona Cardinals reporting to training camp, they do not have a starting quarterback, or at least have not named one yet.

But can they make that decision during training camp?

Jacoby Brissett seems to be the likely starter, since he took over last season after Kyler Murray suffered a season-ending foot injury and started the last 11 games of the season, going 1-10.

Brissett is entering the final year of his two-year contract he signed back in 2024, but back in March, he held out as he wanted a new contract. He did report to mini-camp but didn’t practice.

The eleventh-year veteran is expected to earn a $4.9 million base salary.

Arizona did sign another quarterback in Gardner Minshew, who’s entering his seventh season in the NFL and is becoming a ‘journeyman’ quarterback, as the Cardinals are the fifth team he’s signed with in the last six years.

Minshew signed with the Cardinals on a one-year $8.25 million contract. The former sixth-round pick started his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars, filling in after Nick Foles suffered a broken collarbone in Week 1 vs the Kansas City Chiefs. Minshew finished 6-6 as a starter, throwing 21 touchdowns, six interceptions, and threw for over 3,700 yards, and entering 2020 as the starter.

But that was it. Minshew tanked in 2020, starting only 8 games, going 1-7, and throwing only 16 touchdowns. He was then traded to the Eagles and bounced around the league.

Arizona drafted Carson Beck from Miami in the third round of this year's draft, and he is quickly becoming a fan favorite in the desert.

Sure, there could be some fans who would like to see Beck and the Cardinals' first-round pick Jeremiyah Love start.

The Cardinals are still currently underdogs in every game this season; perhaps that might change once they name a starting quarterback.

Terrion Arnold has drawn interest from four NFL teams.

There’s a chance that Terrion Arnold could get a second chance in the NFL.

According to Ari Meriov, via X (Twitter), Arnold’s agent, Nicole Lynn, stated that the former Detroit Lions cornerback has “had interest” from four teams and has even worked out with one AFC South team.

The teams listed were the New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans, and the Seattle Seahawks.

Houston had the third-year cornerback in for a workout.

According to the Twitter post. It’s stated that there is a “very good likelihood” That he could be signed with a team within the next 45 days.

One question remains: should he sign in the midst of these allegations?

Arnold played for the Detroit Lions from 2024-2025 and was released last month amid facing four felony counts of kidnapping and four felony counts of burglary.

The former first-round draft pick was selected 24th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions and played 24 games, recording 91 total tackles. His only career interception came in a Week 9 loss against the Minnesota Vikings

Washington Commanders to retire John Riggins #44 jersey.

It’s been over four decades since someone wore #44 for the Washington Commanders; now they will ensure no one else will.

The Commanders have announced that they will retire John Riggins' #44 jersey in Week 9 vs the Los Angeles Rams.

Riggins played for the Washington Commanders (Redskins) from 1976-1985 and became the franchise’s all-time leader in rushing yards with 7,742 yards and rushing touchdowns with 85.

Before he signed with the Redskins during free agency, he played for the New York Jets from 1971-1975

The former Kansas Jayhawk racked up four 1,000-rushing-yard seasons and led the NFL in rushing touchdowns in consecutive seasons, in 1983 with 24 touchdowns and in 1984 with 14. The 24 rushing touchdowns are the most in a single season in Washington’s history and are the fifth most in NFL history.

Riggins was a part of Washington’s Super Bowl XVII victory and was named MVP after rushing for a 43-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter on fourth down, beating the Miami Dolphins 27-17.

"There are certain players whose impact goes far beyond statistics, championships and accolades; they become woven into the identity of a franchise.” Commanders Managing Partner Josh Harris said in a statement . “ John Riggins is one of those players.”

After retiring in 1986, Riggins, who was nicknamed “The Diesel,” Was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992 with 11,352 rushing yards, 104 touchdowns, a Super Bowl title, and a Super Bowl MVP.

Other jerseys the Commanders have retired are those of Darren Green (28), Art Monk (81), Sammy Baugh (33), Sonny Jurgensen (9), Bobby Mitchell (49), and Sean Taylor (21).
