I remember this whole thing where people were talking about taking a “dopamine fast” which was basically just a fancy way of saying a break from technology. No tv or music or video games or scrolling social media, just exist in your body and maybe wash some dishes.
Iirc people wound up turning on this like “taking a dopamine fast isn’t a thing. That’s not how dopamine works”
And I mean they’re not wrong, but I do think people sometimes find new ways of pitching a familiar concept that wind up letting people see it differently. Like “dopamine fast” implies taking a break from feeling good? Like a thing that’s obviously not bad. Why would you do that?
If you say “technology break” or “you need to unplug” it can carry a lot of blame and the impression of, tech bad so stop overindulging. Maybe even stop forever because it’s clearly bad for u
Yes that’s a lotta words that were not in the original intention but human brains are wacky and like to add connotations. I think it can be good to reword things to intentionally herd our brains into healthy behaviors. I’m taking a “dopamine fast” aka stop feeding myself things that are good but I can grow a resistance to once they become routine. Take a break and then it will be even more effective later
Kinda like no nut november-
