OOC;; honestly, my biggest fear with smoker is that oda drops the ball with him. that his reoccuring character is only there to serve as a garp analogue for luffy and that nothing else will be done with him. that i'm invested and oda will give me nothing.

generally i trust oda and his writing--he's amazing at coming back to characters, but i've literally been burned by every series i've ever been into. i'm used to favourites either dying or being written out of the story and i can't help but fear the same will happen here.

i like to think oda has a plan, that there's a reason he didn't leave smoker in loguetown as just another marine of the day. i want to hope he's building towards something here and that all these moments--all these times people have told smoker to expand his horizons or warned him off seeking answers are foreshadowing. i want to believe something will be done with his growing anger towards what the marines are. i want to hope that maybe luffy's 'i don't hate you' is a hint.

i can admit that i've been gunning for smoker to join the straw hats since alabasta. i know it's wishful thinking at best, but i do feel it could lead to brilliant things for his development. even if it's not with the straw hats, though, i hope he's not there just to be a garp analogue. he's different to garp. he shouldn't be chained to that damn pointless mirror that adds nothing to his story or luffy's.

i don't know. lately i've felt pessimistic and that maybe his character won't be taken anywhere in the end. he's been around for so many years now, he's been in a few good arcs, and we still don't know his backstory. and as much as i love seeing him, oda doesn't really let him do anything.

OOC;; oh, of course--! chemistry and complicity is definitely the most important thing. especially for muses that can be slow burn? smoker definitely isn't the easiest character to ship, i feel. so, i'm just feeling him out and what might work, honestly! i am all for ships if the opportunity and right feeling arises, though! c:

♠❙— A Marine!! Spade jumped, hiding behind one of the village shop stands. “What are the Marines doing here!? They already came by this month! This is bad..! I gotta warn mom!”

It’s an incredibly effective tactic; hiding, that is. Pity, then, that Smoker caught sight of the boy as he ducked into cover. He has to admit, he doesn’t like the sight of children hiding from Marines when they should trust them to help, but he won’t blame the boy, either.

Instead, it’s another something to feel angry over, though he tucks it away with every other grievance. It coils in his chest and never quite settles, but he isn’t the kind of man who would let a child see him furious.

“Hey, kid. Next time you hide, you might not wanna monologue.” Smoker crouches by the stand--he had considered simply leaning against it, but he knows his height and he doesn’t care to appear like he’s looming. He’d rather meet a child on their level.

“My men an’ I won’t be here long--just picking up supplies unless someone tries something shitty. You can tell your mum that.”

Now that he looks, the boy has familiar features--dark hair and freckles, that don’t have to be from him, but still. It’s a resemblance that makes his stomach knot, as he remembers an execution that feels unfair, that feels like it laughed in the face of the reason he wears Marine colours.

Smoker feels not unlike a bristling cat each and every time he sees Law; he wishes he could pretend it’s solely because he’s a pirate, a man who stole a hundred hearts and likely done much worse. He thinks he knows himself better than that, though, but how it might be some kind of attraction isn’t something he cares to admit– not to himself and certainly not to the man in question.

He has to stoop to her height to allow it, but he humours her–and perhaps himself, though he’s unable to admit to the later. Still, there’s a twitch at the corner of his mouth that isn’t the start of a smile, but maybe it’s something close.

“What the hell are you doing?” His word choice is rough; it always is, but there’s no edge this time. If anything, the question is only half a question, not really meant to be answered, though it’s still dipped in bemusement.

‘ care to share why I should ? it’s funny since it gets you all angry , smokey. remember , i don’t care about rules. pirate and stuff and a general dislike for not doing what i want. ’ the raven answered , a smug grin playing around his lips. he knew the marine was not a stick in the mud & would surely drop his all mighty cool attitude in a bit. he barely refrained from rubbing his hands together as he stuck out his tongue & mouthed a fuck you.

He’s half tempted to take a swipe--to take his jutte from where it rests across his back and attack, but instead the temper fades and he sighs smoke, taking his cigars from his mouth to briefly roll them between his fingers. It’s easy to become lost in temper and this familiar routine, but he’s grown so tired lately.

It’s difficult to tell whether it’s something Ace has said or his own wandering thoughts, but something draws a sudden scoff from his throat. It might even be anger towards something else that overshadows the superficial aggravations he has with the young man in front of him.

“S’pose you don’t really have any reason to give a damn ‘bout anything.” Much like how his superiors and the World Government make the choice to care about all the wrong things. And here he is, finding himself knowing pirates who wouldn't make decisions half as cruel.
