but no yeah lets have the conversation:
"the CEO doesnt want to run that kind of website" Excuse, shouldnt have bought the 'go nuts show nuts whatever' website if thats the case. APPEAL DENIED
"we have to follow the TOS of the appstores we're hosted on" Excuse item one, no you dont, item two, you have since those days implimented infrastructure that would allow pornography and sex work on this platform Without violating TOS of any applicable app store. APPEAL DENIED
"we own the site we get to make the rules" Incorrect, this site has only ever made profit when the users willed it. we collectively own the site as a hive mind and no legal change in ownership will change that. APPEAL DENIED
"we have to keep this website safe for the children who use it" Argument based on fallacy banning pornography and sex workers does not prevent pornography and sex work from occuring on the site, it only forces aforementioned users to hide and avoid labling their content appropriately, which REDUCES the safety for children and sex workers alike instead of increasing it, this has been shown to the point that making this argument at all is tantamount to admiting fascist intent APPEAL DENIED
Reblog it. I want this to be on Tumblr radar by end of the week, i want my notes to be useless from the discourse, i want every single person on Tumblr to have seen this post at some point
While I agree with some points you make there, mostly the one about "you now have built the infrastructure" one (Yup, yup, we have), let me point out something that doesn't help the entire argument:
Well. I don't know how to break this to you, but .. this site hasn't ever done any profit. Nor a single day of its 16 years. Seriously, never, ever, ever. It has been losing money, millions per month, for over a decade and a half. So appealing to "do what the community says it or lose money" is kind of weak: the community has zero power over tumblr making a profit or not, sadly.
(also, just pointing out, the CEO didn't buy the "go nuts show nuts" site, he bought the "huge porn ban site")
That being said? I agree with you, I don't see any reason to not allow showing "things going into things" now you have the tools to properly tag it as adult content, etc etc.
Nope, tumblr is making revenue through those means. Not profit.
I don't want to sound patronizing but there may be people around that genuinely don't know those terms:
- Revenue is when you make money out of something.
- Profit is when the revenue is higher than what it cost to run the business. AKA when the amount of money you are getting paid is bigger than the money you have to pay to others.
If your profit is positive, you are making money. If it's negative, you are losing money, even if people are paying for your products and services.
It's not in my hand to share actual numbers, of course, but for the merch and upgrades sales to cover the costs of running Tumblr entirely, they would need to be at least two orders of magnitude bigger. You would be surprised. I wish we published the numbers.
And of course, you may think I'm just lying. But the very CEO talked about this issue in an interview somewhere not so long ago. And you know, CEOs don't lie about their companies not doing good, if they lie it's going to be on the opposite direction: at the end of the day, an important part of their job may end being to convince investors to put money to keep the machine running, and lying about the company not doing good is not going to precisely help with that
I know there is people here that have issues accepting that Tumblr never has done any money. That it always has been burning millions of dollars per month for 16 years.
It's hard to accept because how the fuck a business can be kept open for so long if it keeps consistently losing so much money per month, right?
Exactly.
16 years and no profit is so on brand for Tumblr,
I have to ask then. Why the feature creep? Surely that costs more than it could POSSIBLY earn? Surely the infra to install things like Tumblr live and constantly develop new features that are met on the whole with derision is more expensive that it could Ever be worth?
Also point of order, the CEO bought the "huge porn ban leads to userbase revolt" website, this site will Always be the show nuts go nuts website. It's part of our culture and anyone who did so little research as to not see that made a mistake
I mean, nuts are allowed once again, so that's a step in the right direction. Anyway, I agree with you that we should also allow explicit sex media if it's correctly labelled. I can't tell you why we haven't done it because I'm outside of that decission loop. I suspect we don't have the capacity to moderate something like this (We barely have the capacity to moderate what's currently allowed with the Community Labels), and an unmoderated "everything goes" approach would get tumblr out of the app store in a second.
Apart from Tumblr Live (which... the infrastructure is mostly not from tumblr, apart from some integration), I don't think there has been much of a 'feature creep'. Like, pretty much every thing we launch is either iterating on existing features or removing stuff with low usage, so it's kind of the opposite of feature creep-ing.
And why to keep iterating on things instead of just leaving tumblr running on its current state and be done with it? well, because tumblr burns a lot of money per month. So the status quo means "tumblr closes".
Tumblr is still around because the current owners think we can manage to change things and either get more people in (so we need to make changes to make tumblr friendlier for people who never used it, since a ridiculous amount of the people who crate an account just leave) or get the current people using it interested in paying for enough stuff that would end making the site start turning a profit. Preferibly both things at the same time.
So that's why we keep changing stuff... the moment we stop doing it and accept it's what it's, it's the moment the people who own this place decides that stop losing money is impossible, so the servers go dark ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Anyway, nothing of this really has much to do with where the limit of NSWF content is set. I think a case can be made that we have the infra for actually, at some point, move that bar to a place closer than it used to be pre-2018, and even frame it as part of everything I said up there ("it would bring new users!").
Moderation staff does not seem to be aware that nuts are allowed again, part of the reason for my aggression was a recent incident where, despite me and my friends using community labels, nudity not including copulation has resulted in posts being flagged and hidden, accounts being shadow banned, accounts being flagged explicit and no longer being accessible via the app, and in some extreme cases abrupt account closing with little to no warning or explanation.
There are many people i know who are actively refusing to engage with paid features or merch for this reason alone, there's some asymmetric moderation happening and this is causing a rift between staff and the userbase and the conversation needs to happen on how that's going to affect the sites ability to aim towards positive profit. And to what extent apology and disavowment of previous policy might need to happen to communicate to people who have been here for a decade or more that Automatic is not Yahoo, that things genuinely Are different now, and that conversations like this can genuinely be Had out in the open.
When sex workers are doing what they need to to follow community guidelines and TOS while still advertising their other services on platforms designed more for that content, that should be encouraged,
But instead i see a Lot of artists appending Screenshots of the terms of service to their posts to force remind moderation staff that nuts are in fact allowed, and that removing the post despite its community lable would be asymmetric moderation
Why would they undermine everything they're saying by just blithely saying something completely ridiculous like "Well, nuts are allowed once again." Staff could go a long way towards building more trust if they'd just stop trying to tell us bald-faced lies about how the website works.
So, about that "a ridiculous amount of the people who create an account just leave" thing...
that wouldn't happen to related In Any Way to the porn-bot/spam-bot problem? hmmmm? 7:-/
Thousands of fake, unused accounts bothering E V E R Y O N E for some supposed SEO reasons and eating up staff's time with all the spam reports we gotta put in -grumble-grumble-
Oh, I wish it was related. The problem with the bots is that they don't leave, they actually do things like following people, like posts or sending messages. When I say "leave" I mean "they create an account, they look around for less than a day, and then won't even log in ever again"
but no yeah lets have the conversation:
"the CEO doesnt want to run that kind of website" Excuse, shouldnt have bought the 'go nuts show nuts whatever' website if thats the case. APPEAL DENIED

I just can't understand why anyone would keep a business that hasn't made profit in a decade and a half running. It doesn't add up.
That's the thing: No one does. That's why tumblr has gone through 4 different owners in the last decade: They bought it, they tried to make it turn a profit for 2-3 years, and then gave up, accepted they just burnt about a hundred million dollars in nothing and sell it to the next one who wants to try.
The last time it was sold, Verizon was about to close the place because they had no offers for this hellsite. That's why Automattic ended purchasing it almost for free: Verizon didn't even want to make money with the sale, they just wanted to stop losing about 60 million dollars per year (which was what Tumblr was costing them back in 2019).
If Automattic decides it's not worth to keep trying and to stop losing money with tumblr, it would go on sale. If no one wants to be the one trying next? well, then tumblr will be here:
Let the games begin.
Well. Well, well, well, well, well. It’s here. The day has finally come. We’ve enjoyed witnessing you set dashboards ablaze the world over with your fandom hot takes, your cats, your dragon art, your recipe polls, your incorrect quotes, your Barbie memes. (But, really, mostly your cats.)
Starting April 20, you will be able to Blaze each other's posts: You’ll be able to scroll through your dash and see a post that tickles you, and then make thousands of complete strangers see that post also.
We made this for fun, but you remain in charge of your stuff. So here are some important details:
Blog-level settings: All blogs will be set to Blazable by default in your blog settings. We’re giving you this heads-up so you can toggle Blaze off on any blog you don’t want people to Blaze posts from (quick link for web). Remember to do so for any secondaries you might want to keep Blaze-free.
Post-level settings: These override your blog-level Blaze settings. You can enable Blaze in the post editor—before or after posting—via the cog (web) or the meatball menu (mobile), regardless of your blog's Blaze settings. Any posts you previously disabled reblogs on will remain unsharable via Blaze. Unless, of course, you edit the post to enable Blaze.
Real humans moderate all posts being Blazed before they go out. If something’s fishy or seems like it might be harmful, it won’t go through.
When someone Blazes your post, you will receive an email, push notification, and/or activity item (depending on your settings).
You can cancel the Blazing of your post before it happens—or extinguish a post that is already being Blazed—either by responding to the aforementioned notification, or via the “Active” tab in your Blaze interface.
We will only accept posts that comply with our global advertising guidelines. Interested in advertising directly? Find out more here.
Here are some FAQs.
So that’s it, really. Be nice! Have fun!
And, as always, if you want to get in touch, drop us a line on @wip or Support, and keep an eye out for more updates on @changes.
Hm.
My gear menu doesn't look quite like the one in the update post. Maybe it doesn't have the Blazing toggle because that feature doesn't roll out till tomorrow, but it also doesn't have the reblogging toggle and that feature was rolled out a long time ago. I just didn't notice till now because I've never wanted a post unrebloggable so never looked for the toggle. Hinky.
Hi there! you are using the legacy editor. You should have a checkbox you can change in the upper right corner of your screen to disable it and use the modern editor:
well, today is a good day:
MADRID (AP) — The Spanish parliament on Thursday approved legislation expanding abortion and transgender rights for teenagers, while making
Spanish lawmakers on Thursday voted through a transgender law letting anyone 16 and over change gender on their ID card even as similar meas
Should I move to Spain?
Absolutely not everyone here hates trans people you will be killed
Actually Spain is as trans-friendly as a country could be since decades ago. Which is not a lot, but still better than most of the rest.
This is the country where Pedro Almodóvar's films (which has had trans characters and actresses almost in every film since the 80s) top the box-office for weeks every time he released a new one, for fucks' sake.
Explain this then. Franco still remains en the rural area
Looks like a good target for the down with cis bus

You know how you tell the difference between a dead dog on the road and a dead nazi on the road?
The dog has tire tracks around it.
They conquered half the world you know
oh I was ignoring you, but now you went into a topic I like! and with a bullshit opinion, no less!!
So, who did conquered half the world? the nazis? pffff
The nazis did ONE remarkable thing: They beat France, quickly. And it was mostly a fault of the french army being entretched in the past: A weakness that the nazis designed THEIR WHOLE ARMY, NAVY AND AIRFORCES to exploit. They were one-trick pony. And yeah, it worked great for them. Until the pony had to do anything else.
But mind you, the entire idea of the war was to kick the ass of the french BIG TIME and then get to a quick peace with britain, expecting the brits to not have the energy to get involved in a continental war again. So they expected to demand freedom to annex the "lebensraum" (which was more or less what their old prussian empire had plus extra bits of territory here and there, very far from being 'half the world', or even 'half europe' since we are at it), maybe some extra colony, since they hadn't any, and maybe force a friendly government in france. And that's it, that was what they could dream of, the very best possible outcoming for them. You just need to check the SEVERAL, increasingly desesperate, peace proposals Hitler sent to the brits between 1939 and 1941.
But Britain says no, war to the knife, etc etc. And the nazis were done. And they knew about it. In the long run, they couldn't beat the UK even if UK had been alone: They didn't have any capacity to cross the channel and invade the isles, since their navy was little more than a gimmick and the UK's was the biggest in the world. They didn't have natural resorces to exploit, and couldn't trade them in (again, the most powerful navy in the world was blocking them). And on top of that, the germans lost the air supremacy even if their air force was much larger than the royal air force (in a way, not surpisingly, since their air force had been designed to support a 'shock and awe' style mechanized attacks and was crap in the mid to long run bombing missions they needed to attack UK mainland) and stopped even being able to do any meaningful harm. The brits could have just sat on their island and wait a few years until the germans starved themselves to death.
Long story short, what did the nazis conquer? France, yeah. Poland (which... if it hasn't been for the soviets sneak attack to the polish back lines, may not have been able to do it at all). And then, they bullied a bunch of small central european countries into accepting being annexed. And... that's it. Even in their moment of larger size, they were a small fraction of the british empire they were waging wars against.
So... yeah, no. The nazis didn't conquer shit, and they just started a war even they knew they couldn't win, just expecting everyone else to didn't care enough about eastern europe so they could just get it for free.
They were, among a bunch of other things, profoundly stupid.
I was talking about the Castilians…. You racist

are you ok? do you need help?

I just realized something about a Spanish word and then something about a related English word as I wondered how to explain what I'd just realized.
First was where "cortometraje" comes from. This is the word for "short film," just like "largometraje" is a long film. I learned these words long ago when I was first learning Spanish and my vocabulary was much more basic. I saw they were compound words with corto- and largo- for short and long. What never made sense to me were the other two words "me traje." "Me?" And something about a suit? Or bringing something? I tried so many times to make sense of this "corto me traje" compound word but 🤷 sometimes words are just funny.
…It's actually just two words "corto metraje," literally meaning short length. That seems really obvious in retrospect 😅
The lovely thing is that it means short length not as in duration, but as in length. Short footage or "meterage," if I may.
This is where I realized that we say "footage" to talk about recorded material in English. That word must come from the lengths of film that were (or still are) used to make video recordings! Having a lot of footage literally means a really long length of film! I never considered that before, footage just meant recordings but it's actually related to our imperial unit if length, the foot. Fascinating!
Folks!! FOLKS!!
This is big!!!
So JK Rowling is in some kind of a podcast called "the witch trials of JK Rowling" that you couldn't pay me to listen to, but I'm gladly reading about how big of a clusterfuck is, and....
So according to Rowling...
Tumblr created trans people!!!!!
Congrats everyone, solid work here!!! Give ourselves an applause!
So…you’re all in agreement, the decision to transition is at least particularly influenced by social factors, and that a website with a large female population and a liberal leaning could be an ideal breeding ground for young women who dislike their bodies to start convincing one another to take medications and remove their breasts to look more masculine and avoid sexism
And this is something to celebrate, even though taking puberty blockers for prolonged periods of time can hinder bone growth, binding for long periods of time can warp the ribcage, having a mastectomy can cause lifelong nerve pain, and taking cross sex hormones can lead to your uterus atrophying inside your body, requiring it to be removed in roughly 10-15 years of that hormone regimen, which could cause a young women to start menopause at a shockingly young age.
Interesting.
Why, yes, of course: Gender is a social construct, so obviously social factors are a key factor in your own perception of your own gender and everyone else's.
Or are you suggesting that gender is, somehow, something natural an innate to every one of us?
No I’m not suggesting gender is innate. I’m suggesting gender is entirely a social construct.
And I’m also suggesting that telling young children that they have a “boy soul” or a “girl soul” trapped inside of them because they happen to like the “wrong” activities in childhood, and then putting that child on a number of medications (all off label, because the makers of these medications refuse to get these drugs certified by governments for transition purposes) when we don’t know the long term consequences is dangerous.
I’m also suggesting that pushing a narrative that stopping children from taking those drugs when they cannot understand the long term impacts on the body (instead of maybe speaking to a therapist) will immediately lead to that child’s suicide is also dangerous, because it forces parents and children onto a medical path they may not agree with or understand.
I’m suggesting that a doctor who immediately places a child on a drug regimen to alter their body for life, even when that child has a large list of other untreated issues like anxiety or depression or OCD or eating disorders or autism, is a bad doctor. A shockingly large number of children who want to transition also have a history of mental illness - do you think that possibly, a suffering child will find an ‘escape’ in transition if they’re being told it’s a cure to all their problems?
And I’m lastly pointing out that a large number of homosexual kids, even before they know what sexuality is, seem to behave in “gender nonconforming” ways as children. And if teachers and parents and even a social media site like Tumblr tells those children “well then you must be trans” and that kids goes on these drugs which will eventually cause sterility before they know anything about themselves, then we have effectively made a society that tells gay children to sterilize themselves. And that’s bad.
I don't know where you are from, but in most countries where kids get any kind of treatment related with his matter, the only actual medicine or intervention minors get are puberty blockers... which are used since half a century ago and the "long term impacts in the body" are as well understood as any other medicine could be, as there are people well in their 50s who took them when they were kids.
Also, I'm not entirely sure why we are even talking about kids: You need to be 14 to sign up for tumblr, and at that point, it feels weird to think a teen may not know what sexuality is, or even that they won't have an approximate idea of which gender they feel identified with or which one they don't. It seems a point in someone life's who may be important to get to understand that yeah, gender is a social construct so they don't need to feel constrained by the roles society alredy assigned to them, so... again, I don't know why you are talking about kids and doctors?
So then you know then that one of the long term impacts of medical transition, puberty blockers and cross sex hormones, includes sterility. One of the long term effects of puberty blockers alone (Lupron) is increased risk of osteoporosis and lung pain in women at young ages - younger than 30 years old (I focus on women because the drug was being used for precocious puberty in girls before it was turned into a puberty blocker off label).
And we’re talking about kids because a teenager is a kid, not an adult. You are still a child until you hit 18. The quote you put on your original post is about teenagers, under 18s.
And here are some stats about kids and medical transition in the US:
Between 2017 and 2021, at least 4780 children between the ages of 6-17 were started on puberty blockers and paid for it using health insurance.
Between 2017 and 2021, 14,726 children between the ages of 6-17 started taking cross sex hormones and paid for it using health insurance.
And between 2017 and 2021, there were at least 776 “gender affirming” surgeries done on children between the ages of 13-17 and paid for by insurance, with double mastectomies being the most common.
The number of children diagnosed with gender dysphoria in 2017 was 15,172 a year. By 2021, the number of children diagnosed with gender dysphoria skyrocketed to over 42,000 - almost triple the diagnoses in 5 years.
All of these numbers are based just on insurance payments for treatment, and may be a severe under count because they don’t include cash payments for treatments.
“You need to be 14 to use tumblr” and you need to be 13 to use TikTok as yet I see children as old as 5 or 6 scrolling TikTok videos, sometimes making them. Super weird, huh? I see elementary school children on Facebook. My young cousins were on discord and Reddit in middle school. Weird, isn’t it, how sometimes kids lie when they’re on the internet?
If gender is a social construct, then why do any of these children need double mastectomies before the age of 18. If gender is a social construct, then why are young girls rushing to get puberty blockers so they don’t grow breasts, and why are we allowing it even though we know the long term consequences of this drug are severe?! I would argue that they don’t, that those are decisions that need to wait until 18. And I would argue that we as adults need to do more work on dismantling the sexist society that preys especially on young girls, and makes them uncomfortable with their growing bodies.
Children are making medical decisions that will alter their bodies for the rest of their lives based off of how much they like the gender roles assigned to them at 10 and 12 years old. Their parents are allowing it because they’re being told if they don’t, their kid will kill themselves. Meanwhile, go try to find a therapist for your kid that’s not a “gender affirming” therapist, because almost everything else has been labeled conversion therapy.
When feminists talk about this, we called terfs and bigots. And when you make a joke about this, it’s called ‘winning the internet’.
I still don't understand why you keep focusing on the medical issues, which don't have anything to do with the topic (I mean, I have opinions on why you choose to focus on a speciffic treatment for teens and treat it if its side effects were something outrageous and not something common, even mild, compared with other much more common treatments commonly used in the same age group).
Do we agree that everyone, teen or not, realizing they can identify and adopt whatever gender they want is a good thing? And that normalizing it is good for the society? (for example, if certain hate groups stopped trying to push some women out of women spaces and we could finally normalize that gender and biological sex are different things, teens would have much less pressure for making their bodies adapt to certain standards)

Day 1: My Maker Journey
I want to keep my maker stuff and work stuff separate so I used this opportunity to buy a laptop from Framework.
Not only so I could run Linux on it but I believe in Framework's mission of creating upgradeable/repairable laptops.
I'm going with Fedora Linux as I love the GNOME interface and Fedora has a pretty big community which is something I'm always looking for.
I bought the DIY version so I can't wait to crack it open and install the memory and hard drive. I'll update you later with my progress.
Framework laptops are cool as hell.
