should have been posted a week ago 🥀
In that time, I separated a section from this to split off into its own post— which has been edited a bit since it originally went up. I also separated my observation about the field here.
The rest is shoved down into this one. VERY LONG POST
Some images I’ll just be comparing without commentary.
• Once again, we see the ‘hand reaching out’ motif. Heaven is out of reach
• In death, Modri’s tattoos rot away… it was only very faintly still on his arm. Maybe it also grows back?
• But, he doesn’t have any tattoos on his neck yet…maybe Yana is coming up with a way to explain Polaris’s lack thereof
• I think that @neoncaptor was right before in how “butler” being one term for a “deacon” may be getting played with here. It wasn’t in the English version, but Mr. Hellsing called himself a clergymen/member of the clergy while the English version opted for “a humble servant of God, after all”— actually, I wonder if I should take note of the original quote not explicitly saying it’s *God’s* clergy?
• Undertaker is framed with a halo like the demon had been, too, except his is a broken ceiling.
• We’ve seen that before
Sebastian busted through a glass ceiling like that to come for Ciel at the end of the Ciel in Wonderland OVA. Symbolism is most likely the same. Possibly yet another Undertaker/Sebastian parallel to throw onto the pile. If it’s Blavatsky, then maybe both him and undertaker have broken halos. Also,
• Undertaker is in a suit, his scars are fresh. He probably hasn’t defected yet. I feel this adds more weight to my theory that the stars have souls because Undertaker was there to reap them, like he was present for r!Ciel and Doll’s deaths.
• @madamemaddy let me know about a translation discrepancy where the official English version implied that Undertaker’s experiments started with o!Ciel, but he did not in fact say that.
• Finally, for the first time, Sebastian (or whoever this demon is) says that his stomach became full. Exactly the phrasing I’ve been cognizant of.
• Still, Mr. Hellsing only said it “eat” (as in chomp or munch or what have you). These monsters we see, I wonder if they could be what becomes of a person after their soul is ingested? Or what happens to people whose souls have been chomped away on, but not ingested; keeping them from heaven or completely passing on. If the latter is the case, I’ll lean more towards this demon being Sebastian; maybe he doesn’t even know what he’s been doing to people by not completely eating them 🤔
there’s a minor difference between what Sebastian told Ciel happens to souls that are eaten vs what Mr. Hellsing says. I wrote this up but it may be subject to change if my fluent friends have any input:
• in the anime, souls that were “purified” by being separated from their hearts could not move on, and their souls were used to build the London bridge while their hearts wreaked havoc and prevented Sebastian from moving during his fight with the angle.
• something was being made an offering in that pentagram in Modri’s flashback. A brain or a stomach?
• Completely unsubtle exposition dialogue where we are made privy to the fact that a known Suikyo Demon (translated as “impulsive” but can otherwise be “crazy”, “drunk”, “eccentric”, “whimsical”, etc) informed a human on how to fight demons, 100 years prior to Modri’s flashback… Perhaps this was a demon who fights with silverware, and manages to get his hands on death scythes?
Previous post: the word ‘suikyo’, how Yana previously described Sebastian.
• I think Modri’s flashback probably takes place in the 18th century, making 100 years ago the 17th century. Marie Antoinette was also born in Vienna in the 18th century, and in the anime, Marie Antoinette came into possession of the Hope Daimond, was killed by Sebastian, and had her soul collected by Undertaker.
• That last tidbit of information was relayed to us by Will when he reveals that Undertaker is a legendary grim reaper. In that scene we are introduced to the anime’s version of how Undertaker alters cinematic records, and it is shown to us as him writing in the books and changing fates. This is what I thought of when we saw Modri’s record as a book with pages flying about. All of these pages are illustrations we haven’t seen yet either, which is highly unusual for Yana now since she’s been reusing panels SOO MUCH. We’re not done seeing his memories for sure.
(Note: “master” here is teacher rather than what’s used to refer to a master of the house).
It looks like Mr. Hellsing may have lost his beard in one of those pages, but I’m less confident in him being Earl Warwick at the moment because it’s like he’s lost all of his hair and weight. He still has the vibe. I’m so confused as to why this character was deliberately drawn to look so distinct while Warwick looks exactly like Sebastian lol
• Sebastian Michaelis crack theory: named himself after a person he gave a lot of information to
even though I deeply hate the demon hierarchy idea. I don’t want demons to be anything. Sebastian being a special demon for his power or rank is meaningless to me, like wow he’s the most polished turd. amazing.
That said, we’ve seen other seals before that have the “names” of other demons
• saw this tweet on discord. I think it could be mixed metals, alchemy.
Sebastian is already aware of alchemy, and the Aurora society is all about “healing”. This is possibly related to the bigger picture, combining souls and bodies…
• The exorcists are really over designed for us to only see them once. The people who were collecting blood from the sanitarium were real freaky looking, I remembered.
• I was wondering if this would come up lol. I figured from Yana’s perspective, emptying and stuffing corpses, putting makeup on them, and pumping them with embalming fluids is probably more morbid/perverse than just cremating them. I don’t think it’s real natural dialogue to hear “roast” and think “cremation”, though, lol, this is a little hamfisted to me.
I’ve thought about how sad/kinda morbid it is that all Vincent, Rachel, o!Ciel and r!Ciel’s graves in the Manor’s courtyard are all empty. Maybe that has to do with the imagery, why the fields were still sparkling, because they got to be planted and return the earth?
Though, Sebastian *could* restore the manor even though it had been burned.
Maybe Ciel’s family were vampires, who knows. Maybe they were in a covenant with a demon or a fallen Angel. In chapter 46, Sebastian says he’s never met a “real vampire” before, but he’s said the same about witches.
+ little weird side comment Sebastian makes
What qualifies as a “real” vampire, a “real” witch? … I’m remembering how when he met r!Ciel, he said he’s never met someone like him before 🤔
Someone pointed out to me the strangeness of this new fella getting a face where the other characters in Modri’s memories didn’t, but I think that’s a pretty arbitrary metric when it comes to cinematic records. Yana just isn’t consistent on that. I figure that the faces we saw (like the demon’s and all the exorcists) it’s probably because they still matter. I don’t know lol
"Fight for life on the planet Earth. Defend all human beings, even the ones you don't understand. Believe in love that is out of anyone's control. And then risk everything for it!"
A small fan animation made in honor of Black butler’s 15th anniversary ✨! Initially started as a simple walk cycle practice but I like how it turned out lol.
