jake never liked the pr side of his job.
he couldn't care less about interviews, cameras following him around, or figuring out what the general public considered the "correct" answer to every question. if it were up to him, he'd spend his weekends in the car and disappear completely between races.Β
still, by now, he was used to it. growing up in the world of motor racing came with big sacrifices. he knew that sponsors came with obligations, and moving from formula 2 to the biggest motorsport championship in the world came with even more of them.
so yeah, sure, every personality test he'd ever taken insisted he was an introvert. most of the times, he needed something to do with his handsβa pen to spin, a ring to twist around his finger, the drawstrings of his hoodie to pull at whenever a room became too crowded. and always preferred small groups, if possible just jay and sunghoon, quiet dinners, and conversations that didn't involve fifteen cameras pointed at his every move.Β
fortunately, he had been raised well and was constantly being media trained. on top of that, he had never been particularly good at saying no. as a result, jake has spent an unfortunate amount of time participating in activities and attending events he had absolutely no interest in attending. he knew how to shake hands properly, how to hold a conversation, how to smile when necessary and how to answer questions without accidentally creating headlines. his fans often mistook his ease in front of a camera for extroversion when inΒ reality, jake simply knew how to perform when necessary. the moment the cameras disappeared, so did most of his desire to socialize.
the moment he was promoted to f1, vcarbβs marketing team made a whole presentation about their determination to make sure people learnt his name. because apparently, being the only rookie on the grid during whatβs predicted to be one of the sport's most chaotic seasons made him very valuable. they set the goal for him to not get overshadowed by the incoming regulation changes, or the constant speculation surrounding the championship battle, nor the fact that half the paddock seemed drawn to switch teams every other week. or, most importantly, by mercedes' sudden return to relevance.
damned kimi antonelli and his perfect italian smile and visionary austrian boss and powerful german car.
so when the fia officially cancelled the bahrain and saudi arabian grands prix without adding replacement races to the calendar, jake had a feeling the unexpected five-week break would come at a cost. If they weren't racing, they'd still be working. and soon enough, his team flew him to the first event they could findβheld in a big city, hosted by a big magazine, and packed with even bigger names he was expected to smile at, shake hands with, and somehow impress. thus, because vcarb had always liked having a list of celebrities to invite into the paddock. networking, they liked to call it.
the event turned out to be fancier that jake had expected, remembering himself he was in the big leagues now. surprisingly, the venue looked less like the setting for a networking event and more like the kind of place people with too much money stumbled into after midnight. the venue was bathed in amber light, just dim enough to flatter every face inside it. there wasn't a single dining table in sight, only scattered cocktail tables draped in black linen, each barely big enough to hold a few champagne flutes before another waiter came by with a silver tray to replace them. music pulsed softly through hidden speakers, loud enough to fill the silence but quiet enough for conversations that sounded far more important than they probably were.
jake had spent the first five minutes wondering where the hell they'd even found this place.
someone from his team had dressed him accordingly, an outfit that was probably way more expensive than his first ever go-kart:Β a blue button-up tucked neatly beneath a brown leather suit that looked way better than anything he would've picked for himself. he felt good in it, admittedly. just... conspicuous. like he belonged in one of the magazine spreads hanging on the walls rather than wandering through them with a polite smile permanently fixed on his face.
around him, actors chatted with designers, athletes laughed with executives, and photographers floated through the room waiting for the next famous face to arrive. it reminded him of the hospitality suites in monaco, if someone had stripped away the racing and replaced every team principal with multiple mirandas priestly.
the evening quickly settled into the point where the official schedule dissolved into a blur of conversations, champagne glasses, and people pretending they weren't checking the time. jake was only half-listening to someone pitching the idea of making him the face of their next campaign when he noticed her for the first time. or rather, he noticed movement.
a figure in black slipping along the perimeter of the venue before disappearing into one of the side corridors. he tried to not think much of it, his attention quickly returned to the conversation in front of him, nodding where he was supposed to, smiling when it seemed appropriate. then, ten minutes later, his eyes wandered across the room again. not really consciously, just one of those strange moments where your gaze drifts without permission and somehow lands on the same person twice.
and there she was. only this time he caught a little moreβ a flash of black silk, the elegant curve of an exposed back, dark hair disappearing around another corner.
jake frowned.
the third time felt different, mostly because he realized he had started looking. waiting for her to appear again. his gaze every so often wandering toward the edges of the room, searching for something he couldn't quite identify or rather, someone. yet she never stayed still long enough, caught for a fleeting moment beneath the amber lights before disappearing behind a partition, emerging from a side hallway before being swallowed by another cluster of people. his vision could only caught her in fragments: a lean shoulder, a confident silhouette, the elegant line of a black dress that seemed to absorb the light rather than reflect it.
it felt just enough to hold his attention but never enough to satisfy it.
and then there was the strange feeling that she was aware of him too, the occasional sensation of being observed. the fleeting impression that every time he happened to glance toward the edge of the room, she was already looking somewhere else.
jake was standing near the center of the venue when she emerged from one of the side hallways carrying a tablet under her arm, and for the first time all evening there was nobody standing right between them. no dim corridor obscuring her features, no crowd interrupting the view. suddenly he could see her face. clearly. and his brain couldn't do anything but to stop. not because she was beautiful, though she was. painfully so. but because he knew her.
the realization struck all at once: she wasΒ the owner of the twitter account, the one in his comment section. the woman who had spent months tormenting him online and had recently been promoted to his dms.
ur mom. jobie. y/n.
her.
jake stared. shamelessly stared. for a full second longer than was socially acceptable.Β
jake watched her for another minute before realizing something that hadn't clicked yet: she wasn't actually part of the event, at least not in the way everyone else was. every time jake spotted her, she was doing something. speaking with photographers; answering questions; directing what looked more like staff members than fancy guests.
now standing near one of the side corridors that connected the converted warehouse to the backstage areas, half-hidden behind a decorative partition and several oversized arrangements of white flowers. it was the sort of place guests had no reason to visit unless they were looking for a restroom or had gotten lost. in other words, exactly where someone working logistics would be. she was reviewing something on a tablet, her attention entirely fixed on the screen as staff members occasionally stopped to ask questions before hurrying away.
jake should have remained where he was. there was absolutely no reason for him to cross an entire hall just to speak with a woman whose primary hobby seemed to be questioning his professional competence online. and yet, he found himself setting down his drink, excusing himself from a conversation he hadn't been paying attention to, and heading toward the edge of the room. towards her.
it only got worse when he moved closer. the pictures in her instagram hadn't captured her properly, because despite already knowing what she looked like, despite spending far more time than he would ever admit scrolling through her personal account, seeing her in person felt completely different. more immediate. more dangerous. and, unfortunately, she was prettier than he remembered.
he noticed how y/n was still halfway through doing something on her tablet when she looked up and found him walking towards her, panic only lasted a fraction of a second before she recovered and slipped into what was clearly her professional persona. she straightened almost instinctively, locking the tablet against her chest like it might somehow make her look more put together. by the time he stopped in front of her, her expression had settled into the same polite smile she'd been giving guests all evening.
professional, calm, completely unlike the small panic attack she'd just experienced.
"good evening," she greeted.
jake smiled, just a little.
"good evening."
they were both lying already.
somewhere between their greetings, they'd reached a silent agreement to pretend they were strangers. as if they hadn't spent the past months arguing in each dms, as if their usernames had never appeared in one another's notifications, as if she hadn't built an entire online persona around teasing the formula one driver now standing a few feet in front of her, as if jake hadn't recognized her almost immediately.
there wasn't a single part of this interaction that qualified as a first meeting. and jake wasn't entirely sure why he was playing along, only that he wanted to.
the woman standing in front of him looked nothing like the version of herself she was trying to present. the first thing he noticed, now that she wasn't halfway across a venue, was that she was smaller than he'd expected. not short, just smaller. something about her online presence had always felt larger than life. every opinion arrived with the confidence of someone six feet tall and entirely unconcerned with consequences. yet standing in front of him, she barely reached his shoulder, forcing her to tilt her head back slightly whenever she looked at him directly.
which she seemed determined not to do for too long.
every time her gaze met his, it darted away a second later toward the room, the hallway, her tablet, literally anywhere else. interesting, he thought. because the second thing he noticed was her eyes. they were enormous, there was no other way to describe them. the kind of eyes that made every emotion visible whether their owner intended it or not, and unfortunately for her, they were currently doing a terrible job of supporting her act. she was trying to project composure, professionalism, the calm confidence of someone greeting just another guest. meanwhile those eyes were giving him a front-row seat to the fact that her brain was operating at approximately twelve different speeds at once.
βare you enjoying the event?" she asked. still trying to act professional, neutral, exactly the sort of question she'd asked every guest that evening.
"i am." his answer came a little too quickly. "and you?"
the question seemed to catch her off guard. her brows lifted just slightly before she gave a small, almost amused exhale.
"i'm working."
jake found himself paying attention to details he normally wouldn't have noticed. she was simply endearing. and her expressions. god, her expressions. for someone trying so hard to remain unreadable, she had one of the most expressive faces he'd ever seen. every thought seemed to flash across it before she could stop herself.
"right. walked into that one."Β jake let out a quiet laugh. "you did all this?"
the question caught her off guard. she glanced around as though seeing the room through his eyes for the first time that evening.
"yeah, my team and i."
someone brushed between them carrying a tray of champagne, forcing jake to step slightly closer so they weren't separated by the passing staff. neither of them acknowledged it. they simply continued talking from the new distance, close enough now that the music blurred the edges of every sentence.
he had meant to tease her when he decided to approach her, maybe enjoy the advantage of knowing who she was while she remained convinced she was anonymous. instead, he found himself distracted by the reality of her. the fact that she was clearly exhausted after spending an entire day running around this event. the fact that her hair, while still beautiful, had lost some of the perfect styling she'd probably started the morning with. the same thing had happened to her makeup, it was not ruined, but lived in. the subtle shimmer around her eyes had smudged slightly at the corners, as though she'd rubbed them at some point during the afternoon and never had time to fix it. the color in her cheeks looked less like makeup and more like exhaustion disguised as determination. like she'd been too busy making sure everyone else's night went smoothly to think about her own appearance.
she looked real.Β
"it's impressive," he said. "your team did a really good job."
she looked at him for a moment, searching his expression as if deciding whether he was only being polite.
"thank you."
the music swelled, swallowing whatever she said next. jake frowned slightly, because her lips moved, but hat was all he caught.
"what?" he leaned in, just enough to hear her over the music.
y/n tipped her chin up to repeat herself, her voice a little louder this time, but for a brief, embarrassing second, jake still wasn't listening. not really. he was too busy noticing the details that distance had hidden from him. the tiny gold earrings tucked beneath her hair. the faint citrus scent of her perfume. the way her lipstick had worn down over the course of the evening, not gone, just softened into soft stain instead of a perfect finish.
only when she stopped speaking did he realize he hadn't heard a word she'd said.
"...jake?"
he blinked.
"hm?"
a smile tugged at the corner of her mouth.
"i asked if you'd like another drink."
βiβm fine. thank you.β he should've let the conversation end there, excuse himself and let her go back to working. instead, he heard himself ask, "can I ask you something?"
she almost immediately nodded. and when she looked at him, really looked at him, jake suddenly understood something that hadn't quite translated through his screen. she was trying very hard not to stare, which would have been more convincing if she weren't so bad at it. because every few moments her eyes drifted back to him again, as though she couldn't quite help herself. his face, his suit, the event badge hanging from his jacket. then immediately away again the second she realized she'd been caught looking.
the pattern repeated often enough that jake had to bite back a laugh. for someone pretending not to know him, she seemed remarkably interested in confirming that he was indeed in front of her. making him realize the situation was affecting her too.
he had imagined this moment. meeting the girl behind the account. the voice behind the replies. the woman responsible for half his most ridiculous notifications. and now that she was standing in front of him, trying desperately to act normal while every microscopic expression betrayed her, jake couldn't help thinking that reality was infinitely more entertaining than anything he'd imagined. which was dangerous. very dangerous.
"i have this strange feeling we've met before."
"we haven't." the answer came a touch too fast.
jake couldn't help the smile that tugged at the corner of his mouth. "you're sure?"
she held his gaze for exactly one second before recovering, her expression smoothing back into the practiced composure she'd worn all night.
"i think i'd remember meeting a formula one driver."
it was a perfect answer. reasonable. completely impossible to argue with. very her.
jake nodded slowly, though the feeling refused to leave him.
before jake could answer, someone appeared beside them. tall. lean. younger than both of them by a few years, if jake had to guess. sharp cheekbones, dark hair styled into short spikes with the ends bleached a dirty blond, dressed all in black too. the type of guy that should definitely be a model and not working behind the scenes.
"sorry," he said, interrupting them, lowering his voice like what he was about to say was confidential information jake couldnβt listen. "we're almost out of champagne."
y/n frowned immediately, like the statement itself was unacceptable, already tapping something into her tablet. β...no, we're not."
"yes we are. they're opening the reserve bottles."
her fingers paused, expression shifting to a defeated one. "...how are we almost out of champagne?"
the blond shrugged. "rich people."
for a second, she just stared at the screen, as if it could give her answers. then she exhaled through her nose, more disbelief than frustration, and made a quick adjustment to her dress with practiced precision.
βtell them to slow service at the front bar,β y/n spoke with full seriousness, even though she also had to tilt her head up to meet the gaze of the guy who was a full head taller than her, as if height wasnβt something that factored into authority at all. it was nice, seeing that she was actually bossy in real life and not just some internet persona. βiβll tell catering to stop letting guests take full bottles to tables.β
the blond guy nodded like that was entirely reasonable plan to solver their champagne shortage. he then finally looked at jake properly. then at her. then back at jake.
ββ¦am I interrupting something?β
something flickered across y/nβs expression. it was quick, barely there. her eyes widened slightly, like the question had landed closer than it should have. a faint warmth rose to her neck before she smoothed it over almost immediately, straightening her posture as if resetting herself.
βno.β she said, too fast to be casual. her gaze focusing on the blond, just long enough to make the warning clear without saying it: donβt.
βiβuh. i have to go. nice meeting you.β y/n said now directed to jake, already half-turning, fingers tightening around her tablet. something in her voice cringed when saying it, nevertheless, she didnβt meet his eyes one last time and just shifted back to working mode.
it wasnβt rushed. onlyβ¦ inevitable.
before jake could respond, she was already turning away, slipping back into the flow of the room like she had never really stepped out of it at all. as they walked away, jake couldnβt catch what the tall guy said under his breath, only the way she immediately pointed after him without really looking away from her tablet.
βstop.β she hissed. it earned the other a laugh before both disappeared back into the crowd. and just like that, the space she had occupied was empty. for a second, jake didnβt move.
it was ridiculous, really, how quickly someone could become just another face in a room like this again. he glanced once toward the direction sheβd gone, expecting something. a return. a pause. something unfinished. still, he got nothing.
when he finally looked away, returning to the main event, it was with the uncomfortable realization that he wasnβt sure when he would see her again. and worse than that, he wasnβt sure he would be able to go back online and act as if nothing happened.
