“Catching NOW”

This is a 3D visual representation of a moment being caught. I wanted to find a way that could physically demonstrate my project of “catching now”. In order to achieve this I took different elements of my project, and materials that I have used through out my project, to represent a moment being caught. By being caught, I mean as if it has been captured or fallen into a trap.

   To achieve this I used the Filoconsturction workshop to create a cage that I could easily hang my “paper mache” figure form. I used a thin, flexible wire that I could knit easily to create the cage. Closing one end, I carefully threaded a long piece of wire through the top of the wire figure and then through the closed top of the cage. I pulled the cage down over the pink figure and closed the bottom of the cage by using more wire to sew the bottom. I then suspended it in the air by hanging it from the ceiling.

“Wired Thoughts”

   From looking at mine and Van Gogh’s works , I began experimenting with the motions he painted with and the design that I used to create my wire figures.  

   Here I have two pictures of my first and second attempt at using yarn to paint. I decided to use yarn as from doing my paper mache figure I've gotten fond of the texture of it and like how it is very easy to change its nature and to morphe it into something different. In my first attempt I used too many colours and didn't really know what I was doing with it. As I started to practice with it towards the end of it I noticed a pattern to follow. For my second attempt I stuck to one pattern and took my time building it. This page turned out much cleaner and controlled. 

   I really like the combination of the yarn and the movements created in it. I feel the need to see it blown up, maybe on a A2 or A3 scale.

“Wired Thoughts”

From looking at my wire work I began to get reminded of  Vincent Van Gogh’s  ‘Starry Night’. I noticed that the stars and my wire figure heads look similar. His stars are made of thick and thin lines rather my figures heads are made up of one continuous wire. But, both have the same type of end result. I love this piece and his work as he had a very distinct style of painting that flows in a unique way.

“Frozen Figures”

I put my plan in action and dived straight into the bleach. I dipped my wire figures into a bowl of bleach and gently pressed the figures onto the sweatshirt and watched as the colour lifted. I then began to layer and build up the amount of figures I used on the front and back of the hoodie. For the sleeves I carefully done six stamps alternating on the sizes.

It isn't my cleanest work as the bleach would drop off the wire as i moved it between the bleach bowl an hoody. I like the effect that it gave and how you can still make out the wire figures shape even if the bleach didn't always work.

“The Fallen Soldiers”

   From creating my physical animation I noticed that I had some extra wire people made. Here are some of them. When I was making the  animation of the wire people, originally I planned to have 5 rows of six, however because of the paper I used I could only fit four rows of six. The fifth row was meant to be the wire figures growing and shrinking. 

    Now, I want to use these leftover figures as something else. More along the style of stamps, so that I could freeze or catch them in their positions in this moment of time. I have the idea of using them to print their figures onto a fabric, but I would like to experiment this with not dyes, but bleach. I will try bleach as it would hopefully look more like they imprint themselves into the fabric, rather then they were imprinted onto the fabric.

“The Two sides of The Present”

In this piece I have gone back to looking at newspapers and their colors, but I have looked past the images and the words that are printed. This piece is made entirely of newspaper and cardboard. The blue area that covers most of it is made from paper that was left to soak overnight and then rung out and mixed with PVA glue. I used it to add some texture to the piece and to act as a boarder, almost like a river running down a mountain and separating two pieces of land. However, in this it is separating the two types of news and present. On the flat plain there is a picture from the front page of the Toy Show, but on the more jagged piece of cardboard there is a large dark headline. The blue paper pulp is placed to show the huge divided between the two pieces of cardboard. 

This is how I see the media. It is always either on one side of the river, either the glamourize side or the terror side. To me there is no inbetween.

“Plaster Figure”

I decided to go back to my mold of my wire figure and cast a plaster piece to figure out which would be suited for my next piece.

  I placed the mold on the workbench and balance it between two bags of clay. I mixed the plaster by half filling a bucket with water. I then scooped handfuls of plaster powder into the bucket. I kept doing this until a peak of powder formed and didn't dissolve.

  Next I mixed the powder and water together until the powder completely dissolved. When the mixture was ready I then poured it evenly into the mold/. I left it to dry overnight.

  When I took the plaster out of the mold I noticed that it couldn't stand on its own. I don't think I can use it as I had hoped to as it is more fragile than I expected it to be. I think I am going to use the woolen figure instead as it is sturdier.

“1. Paper Mache Figure”

From making my 3D wire figure, I started to brainstorm ideas on how I could use it in my project. From here I got the idea to make a mold of it so I could make more 3D figures.

  From making the mold I then decided to do paper mache. However, instead of using paper I decided to use wool as I had been experimenting with it in my conceptual notebook. I began to lightly shred the wool in a way that it kept its light and airy nature. I then dipped it into clear PVA and then layed it into the mold. I repeated this process until the mold was completely covered. I then done four layers of PVA and wool. 

  When the layers fully dried, I poured more PVA over the mold then grabbed handfuls of wool and pressed them into the mold and left some of the wool falling out of it.

“Animation and Film Making Workshop”

Done the Animation and Film Making workshop this morning.  I learned how make an animation on Photoshop by drawing over a picture using many layers.  For this picture it took  536 layers to complete the entire image.  It also took just over 3 hours to complete.

“Wire in Stop-Motion Movement”

I decided to pick up my wire people and take them into ‘action’. By incorporating the skills I learned in the book making workshop, I was able to come up with a way to present the wire people. 

I fixed the problem of the structure by folding the card by eye instead of along a ruler. I then enforced the back of the folds with cardboard so that it can now hold itself up and be moved.

I can now show the moving by closing and opening the book. Therefore catching them mid-movement when the book is open.

Film Poster Workshop

“Blazing Saddles”

In this workshop I was asked to pick a film and write out a short version of the plot.For this I chose the movie “Blazing Saddles” as I know the movie very well.  From here I had to think of five objects in the movie that would best represent it. I chose hands, a gun, a hat, a Sheriffs badge and the railway track.  Then narrowed it down to the badge, hat and tracks. I then drew the objects and cut them out, arranging them and leaving them in a minimalist form. The poster is then scanned onto the computer.

In order to complete I will have another Film Poster Workshop, but using Illustrator.

Drape and Draw Workshop

“Pleated Dress”

For my second dress I only used the starchy fabric from the “scarf dress” but, instead of draping it I pleated the front and added a few layers. 

I then drew this with a sharpie marker as I’m not used to drawing with marker and wanted to see how it would look.  I really enjoyed the workshop and playing with the fabrics. Now I’m trying to figure out how I can use it in my project.

“Scarf Dress”

I used a scarf as the top half of the dress to create the loose look.  I used a more starchy material to create a slightly structured skirt.

Charcoal and water were used to create the skirt on paper. I had never used water with charcoal, but I like how it softened the lines of charcoal.  Ink was used to draw the top as I wanted it to look softer and looser then the skirt.

“Wire in Stop-Motion Movements”

I am trying to use one of the workshops to help me present the wire people. However, it is proving to be difficult as a normal sheet of paper is too flimsy and the card is not exactly the easiest to manipulate. 

 I’m going to have to try and figure out a way to work around this..
