28-4-21 Final Poster Design
To create my poster I used Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Procreate. I used Photoshop for my images, Illustrator for my typography and then Procreate to tidy up the word ‘Slow’, making them brighter and more even. The font I used is called ‘Big Caslon Medium’.
I used words from the poem “Time is Eternity” in sections of my poster. The letters spelling slow represent the line “Too slow for those who wait”. The radio lines represent “Too long for those who wait”. The heart placed in the middle of the clock arms represents “But for those who love - Time is Eternity”.
“Time is,
Too slow for those who wait,
Too swift for this who fear,
Too long for those who grieve,
Too short for those who rejoice,
But for those who love -
Time is Eternity”
- Henry Van Dyke
28-4-21 Creating my Final Poster
As I was using Photoshop and Illustrator to create my poster, I took screenshots of my screen so I could look back on my progress. I cropped the images in a way my layers were still visible.
In Photoshop, I used the colour drop tool to pick the colour from the letter L, and then made my whole background that colour so the background and foreground would blend. I then cropped my radio photo and turned it sideways.
In Illustrator, I experimented with my typography. I wasn’t sure where I wanted to place the word ‘Exhibition’ so I moved it around my poster to test it out. I used the colour drop tool to get the colour of the clock face to use as my typography colour.
28-4-21 Typography Thumbnails
Prior to adding typography to my poster, I drew a few thumbnails so I could get an idea of where I wanted to place my words.
In my opinion, the bottom left thumbnails had the best flow and was the most even. I felt it would look most aesthetically pleasing.
26-4-21 Making my Poster Part 1
Today I downloaded the Adobe package so I could begin working on my poster digitally. Although I’m not very familiar with Photoshop, I decided to create my poster digitally to challenge myself.
I initially started working from my right thumbnail, but as I was working I started adding elements from both thumbnails. I included an images that I took of a clock and radio, the word ‘Slow’ which I collages using cut outs from magazines and also a small heart lino print. I found the vintage paper background on the internet. I inverted my image of the radio a few times and then inverted it back so I could create ‘glitchy’ lines to blend it into the rest of my poster.
Lastly, I went on Procreate to clean up the letters that I added, making them brighter and more even.
I plan on adding text to my poster using Illustrator. In conclusion, i’m really happy with how the Photoshop section of my poster came out, as I was learning and experimenting with the different tools while creating it.
24-4-21 Poster Research
I researched posters and exhibition posters as inspiration before creating my final poster. I stuck to clock faces, as it was the main aspect of my project.
I was really focused on the simplicity of the event details in the last 2 images. I didn’t want the date and location on my poster to overshadow the typography on my clock face.
I also really liked the positioning on the clock in the first image.
24-4-21 Poster Research
As I was creating thumbnails for my final poster, I used these images as inspiration.
I took the most elements from the last poster. I really liked how some of the letters are edited out or covered up.
23-4-21 Lino-Cut
As part of my final poster, i’m going to add a few small hearts in the design. I wanted the hearts to look vintage, so I roughly created them using lino.
I was inspired to make them from lino from ‘Black Mountain Studio’s’ logo. In my poster, i’ll pick one or two from the above sheet and copy and paste them, so they’re more evenly spaced out and even.
The hearts reference the line “But for those who love - time is eternity”.
23-4-21 Thumbnails
Today I created more thumbnails, using aspects of work that i’ve already done and photographs that i’ve taken.
I’m planning on making collages of these thumbnails to help me pick which I’d like to be my poster design.
23-4-21 Updated Moodboard
After a tutorial with Sharon today, I was influenced to go back to the earlier work I did on my theme “Time is Eternity”. I’ve decided to work with the above colour palette and photographs for my final poster.
I plan on creating my own version of the heart image using lino. This’s inspired by the ‘Black Mountain Recording Studio’s’ logo, which I have previously posted about. I’m going to use small hearts in sections of my poster, referencing “But for those who love - time is eternity”.
21-4-21 Prague Astronomical Clock Research
The Prague Astronomical Clock is a medieval clock attached to the Old Town in Prague. It’s the oldest astronomical clock in the world.
I researched this clock at the beginning of this project, but since looking through my research book, the colours are very similar to my current colour scheme. I found it interesting that I probably had a preference for these colours from the beginning of the project but only realised it recently.
20-4-21 Making Thumbnails Digital
From my “Time is Eternity” drawing, I created a digital version on Procreate. I felt this would be the easiest way to decide if I’m happy with my colour palette, design and typography.
I plan on doing more alternative thumbnails of this design, using different typography and styles.
Update 23-4-21:
I’ve decided to create more of a collage based poster, as I’ve discovered it’s more of my natural style, instead of illustrative work.
20-4-21 Typography Experimentation
Focusing on the quote, “But for those who love - time is eternity”, I experimented with different fonts, physical and digital. I also tried stretching letters on Procreate, to play with the word ‘Eternity’. I used the font ‘Didot’.
20-4-21 ‘Black Mountain Studios’ Research
Black Mountain Studio’s is a recording studio located in Louth. Their new logo was designed by Grandson Design Studio.
What caught my attention about the Black Mountain Studios logo was the process. It really inspired me to create a lino cut version of my final design, aswell as a paper-cut and digital.
20-4-21 ‘The North is Next’ Research
‘The North is Next’ is a campaign relating to marriage and reproductive health rights in Northern Ireland. This riso print magazine contains five essays in relation to the cause.
The typography of the magazine really caught my eye, it would match well with my project theme.
If I had access to the risograph machine, I would’ve loved to create my final piece in riso form.
