Candle holders and vases-
Incense burners by Chiara Della Santina
Babs Haenen
Babs Haenen creates expressive and impressionistic ceramics that give equal importance to colour, line and form. She is influenced by abstract painting and landscape motifs, like rippling water, on her practice.
My favourite pieces~
Heidi Bjørgan
Heidi Bjørgan challenges the notion of what a potter may be by ‘removing’ all traces of acquired professional skills. At times her ceramic works look as if though they have melted and imploded in the kiln and her glazes are dynamic and expressive.
Some of my favourite pieces from the talented Heidi Bjørgan.
Anne Marie Laureys
Anne Marie Laureys thinks of her ceramics as metaphors for feelings. She starts the process by throwing a classic, symmetrical pot. Whilst the clay is still soft and wet, she pulls, folds, pinches and punctures it.
No two pieces are the same there all unique.
Some of my favourite pieces by her.
I made some porous rocks and only bisque fired them.
With porous rocks you can add essential oils and once they dry the scent will stick for so many hours.
I love to wear calming scents so these will be a great addition to my collection.
I put eucalyptus oil on the terracotta beads and I put lemon and tangerine on the other.
This is more of a sculptural piece I made to hold a tea light candle in the front and some flowers in the lip on the back.
I underglazed it with different shades of blue and white i splattered and dripped some down on it with spraying the spray bottle.
I dipped it in Clear glaze so it will have a clear shine over it once it’s fired.
I created another incense holder in the shape of a flower.
First I cut out the shape and got a circular object to dent the circle in the middle.
Then I decided that it would better with a 3d circle so I made one with clay and slipped and scored it to the middle. I then added a hole for the incense and little dots for texture.
I sat it on a clay donut to give it a curved shaped while it was drying.
I underglazed it with purple, pink and white. I mixed white into red and white into purple to create pastel colors. I dipped it into a clear glaze to create a shine once it’s fired.
Wavey incense holder. I got the idea for the shape from the fluidity of the smoke as the incense burns.
I want to experiment using multiple incense scents.
Once it was bisque fired I dipped it in light blue glaze and wiped the sides so it wouldn’t stick to the kiln.
Another piece I threw on the wheel and purposely let warp like what happened to my marble one accidentally.
I decided to experiment with the glazes, the combination I wanted Mary had never tried before so we were both curious.
I poured white Tin glaze into it and swirled it around then I dipped the top half into the white also. Once the white had dried I dipped 3/4 of it into black overlapping with and black for a quarter. I’m curious to what will happen in the kiln.
I’m also going to use this piece as a hanging basket for fake flower heads sprinkled in essential oils.
I wanted to create a marble effect in the clay by mixing terracotta and stone clay.
I layered the clay 50/50 amount of each to create a balance and kneaded it together.
I tried to turn a little vase with it but it started to collapse as I leaned too hard on top but as it began to fall it became a very abstract pot.
I want to use it as a hanging basket holding flowers with various scents with rope to hang from.
I also had to use the plastic kidney to scrape off the mucky layer from throwing to reveal the marbel effect.
A bowl I threw and turned on the wheel that I thought would add to my project.
I think would be useful to have a storage bowl for essential oils or dried flowers etc.
Throwing always eases me back into ceramics after a break away, so I decided to throw a cup for the first time and I’m delighted with the results.
I decided to throw a cup because I wanted to challenge myself and make something that reminds me of the scents in my home.
I will glaze my cup with transparent glaze so it will be useable. I also want to make a cup cosy to incorporate my other material and to add a pop of colour.
The scent of the brewing tea gives me a sense of home.
Primary research of things that have a beautiful smell around my home.
There is always candles lighting and flowers on the table and counters. You can also smell the tea brewing in the teapot waiting to be poured.
When I go home on the weekends the scents off them hit me and I immediately know I’m home.
For my second project I decided to do it on smell. Scent to me is everything, from candles in houses, perfumes and washing detergents etc.
I wanted this project to create a sense of home, warmth and comfort.
The scent I want to include is lychee and red berry from my diffuser and other scents that immediately trigger my thoughts of home, warmth and comfort.
