Keep it simple, stupid. That adage succinctly applies to music as much as any other topic. When rock becomes excessive and bloated, there is always an undercurrent of directness and candor that follows emphasizing three or four chords, confessional lyrics, and rowdy tempo that leads the march for a back-to-basics resurgence. The pushback on popular music is palpable in 2015 with albums like All Of Something making an irresistible case for a simpler sound. This Ohio-based band’s sophomore album starts with a slight twang and a slow burn on “Stunted”, cutting to the quick in response to a frustrating relationship. That sentiment continues on “Getting On In Spite Of You” that tells the well-worn story of moving on without regret set to a pogo rhythm. Where SPORTS shows true breakthrough potential is on odes to Americana like “Harder” where the heartache matches blow for blow with the best tracks from contemporaries Waxahatchee and Swearin’. Finishing up in under a half hour with metaphor-laden “The Washing Machine” and the empowerment that courses through All Of Something rings truer than any of the anthemic rock than dominates the mainstream. Just watch as more bands break out and follow in SPORTS’ footsteps of keeping it simple and being smarter for it.
