catch me i'm falling | nimael 1
Earth was not very much like Nimueh had imagined it. Perhaps sheâd been too far distanced from humanity for too long, filled with anger at their preferential treatment by her Father, and sheâd just assumed they were still stuck in the dark ages. Intellectually she knew about their âfeatsâ of technology, their modern wares, but the news had meant very little to her. She did not care for the humans whoâd stolen her Fatherâs affections. Until she had started considered that maybe His affections werenât worth much to her anymore. Her rage had been mounting for some time, but angels were patient even in their fury. It had taken centuries for her to consider turning her back on her heavenly family.
But once sheâd begun to think it, there was no turning back. Not for Nimueh. Sheâd always been more headstrong than the majority of her siblings, willful and occasionally downright mischievous. Still, she had never understood why her Father was soâŚmysterious. So mercurial. It was as though she could never please Him, never understand Him. Nimueh and her brothers and sisters never knew His plans. Frankly - she was tired of it. Living half-slave, half-warrior was no way to spend an immortality. Bound to ridiculous, unexplained rules and the purity - it sent her into fits of wrath.
But of course that meant attracting the notice of the archangels, whoâd given her two choices: get in line or get out of heaven. It hadnât been difficult to choose. And so sheâd torn her allegiance to God and her winged brothers from her heart, bearing the agony with a stalwart calmness as she ripped her own grace out. It had felt like falling, though physically she hadnât really. One moment sheâd been in Heaven, the next she was here - lying in a field on Earth. A highway crossed the terrain just a few feet away, and as she sat up, she felt the phantom ache of wings in her shoulder blades. But there were no crushed feathers or hollow bones. There was on this, a raw, human form of Nimueh.Â
It had been a while since Kael had first come to earth, how long exactly he didnât know. He had long forgotten about time being an important factor in life, it wasnât something that he needed to worry himself about when he had an immortality awaiting him. That was one of the things, if anything, that he missed most about being up in heaven. Everything down on earth was bright and violent, he had learned that the hardy way when he woke up with his first hangover. He still didnât understand why it was called a hangover, but he imagined thatâs what being striked down by his father felt like. Lucky for him, none of his discretions on earth had deemed him worthy of that in his fatherâs eyes. Though, Kael doubted that he even paid attention to what he was doing down here. And why would he? He was as good as what the humans called a âdead beat dadâ when he was up in heaven, so why would now make any different?
Fallen Angels weren't that different from humans, really. While they still retained their grace after the fall, they didn't hold onto all the powers and gifts that came with it. Like, immortality. That was gone now, and that had been hard for Kael to come to terms with at first because now he actually had to look after himself. There was more things that could do damage to him now, not just the angel blades forged in heaven itself. Still, he managed to cling onto a few of his powers, like his connection to angel FM. It wasn't as strong as it had been when he still had his grace, but he could listen in every now and then.Â
That was how he'd found out about his latest fallen comrade, and how he had tracked down her location to a field near the highway. As he made his way across the field, in search of the fallen angel, he couldn't help but feel a twinge of jealousy in his stomach towards her. As far as places went, this wasn't the worst place to wake up in. It actually reminded him of the fields up in heaven, before they had become littered with the bodies of those who tried to punish him for leaving. It wasn't a choice he wanted to make, they were still his brethren, but they had forced his hand. It was kill or be killed, and Kael wasn't ready to die after only just deciding to live life how he wanted to, instead of in the image of their father.Â
Jealousy wasn't the only thing he felt as he continued on his path through the field, wondering who it might be that had fallen or why he was even here in the first place. There was a feeling of curiosity too. Curiosity towards his old family was no longer in his nature though, the only thing that made him curious these days was the ways of mankind. As far as Kael was concerned, he had scrubbed his feathers clean of the rest of them the day he had fallen. Yet, he still found himself needing to come here, needing to find out who it was that had fallen. If not for anything but the simple feeling of closure.Â
"It's you." His words hung in the air as he came to a stand still, any other emotion he had been feeling while searching for this spot had now faded away and been replaced by surprise. Never in a million years would he have expected her to become a fallen angel, never would he had expected her to turn her back on her father like he and others had before.Â
