catch me i'm falling | nimael 1
It had been a while since Kael had first come to earth, how long exactly he didn’t know. He had long forgotten about time being an important factor in life, it wasn’t something that he needed to worry himself about when he had an immortality awaiting him. That was one of the things, if anything, that he missed most about being up in heaven. Everything down on earth was bright and violent, he had learned that the hardy way when he woke up with his first hangover. He still didn’t understand why it was called a hangover, but he imagined that’s what being striked down by his father felt like. Lucky for him, none of his discretions on earth had deemed him worthy of that in his father’s eyes. Though, Kael doubted that he even paid attention to what he was doing down here. And why would he? He was as good as what the humans called a ‘dead beat dad’ when he was up in heaven, so why would now make any different?
Fallen Angels weren’t that different from humans, really. While they still retained their grace after the fall, they didn’t hold onto all the powers and gifts that came with it. Like, immortality. That was gone now, and that had been hard for Kael to come to terms with at first because now he actually had to look after himself. There was more things that could do damage to him now, not just the angel blades forged in heaven itself. Still, he managed to cling onto a few of his powers, like his connection to angel FM. It wasn’t as strong as it had been when he still had his grace, but he could listen in every now and then.
That was how he’d found out about his latest fallen comrade, and how he had tracked down her location to a field near the highway. As he made his way across the field, in search of the fallen angel, he couldn’t help but feel a twinge of jealousy in his stomach towards her. As far as places went, this wasn’t the worst place to wake up in. It actually reminded him of the fields up in heaven, before they had become littered with the bodies of those who tried to punish him for leaving. It wasn’t a choice he wanted to make, they were still his brethren, but they had forced his hand. It was kill or be killed, and Kael wasn’t ready to die after only just deciding to live life how he wanted to, instead of in the image of their father.
Jealousy wasn’t the only thing he felt as he continued on his path through the field, wondering who it might be that had fallen or why he was even here in the first place. There was a feeling of curiosity too. Curiosity towards his old family was no longer in his nature though, the only thing that made him curious these days was the ways of mankind. As far as Kael was concerned, he had scrubbed his feathers clean of the rest of them the day he had fallen. Yet, he still found himself needing to come here, needing to find out who it was that had fallen. If not for anything but the simple feeling of closure.
"It’s you." His words hung in the air as he came to a stand still, any other emotion he had been feeling while searching for this spot had now faded away and been replaced by surprise. Never in a million years would he have expected her to become a fallen angel, never would he had expected her to turn her back on her father like he and others had before.
She felt so slow, so sluggish. Was this what it was to be human? A vague echo of the divine ease that was in the body of every angel? Nimael scowled, and pulled herself up into a sitting position. An old bitterness surged in her - a fury that her Father could love these desolate creatures more than his perfect angels. But now she was nearly one of them, or as good as, and so self-loathing hit her like a slap. She was distracted from wallowing by a strange - prickle - in her brain, the sensation of - another angel? Confused, she turned to the source of this feeling, and was taken aback to see Kael trekking across the field towards her.
Resolutely, she molded her expression into one of stalwart emotionlessness, like a marble statue. She didn't want him to see how weak and wretched she felt, not yet. It had been - years - since she'd known him. And things were so different now. Both of them were...fallen, now. But the last time she'd seen him she'd been furious with him, screaming at him not to go, not to abandon his family - her. Nimael could not have suspected what a hypocrite she'd turned out to be. "It's me." She answered, tonelessly, her voice a bit scratchy as if from disuse. "...surprise." Nimael sighed and looked away, unable to hold his gaze. She focused instead on brushing the dirt and grass from her arms. This was too much. She needed - time to adjust. Without Kael standing over her, probably judging her, already accustomed to his own humanity...
Nimael bit her lower lip, hard. "You must be congratulating yourself. You were right. Heaven is not the place it used to be, not anymore." She glared into the distance. "Well, go on, you can brag. It doesn't matter. I'm here now, there's no going back."
