goodnight im not gonna say anything.

Rita felt her expression shift into surpriseâ not a common occurrence, since itâd been years since sheâd mastered a nearly impenetrable smug mask. She knew sensational news when sheâd heard it relegated to the hush-hush middling pages of the Prophet. If there was ever an example for wildly unchecked Ministry power, the latest Wizengamot trials were it. But her eyebrows quickly drew back downwards and when she spoke her disinterested tone didnât waver in the slightest. âHoly hell, Rosier, I didnât know they upgraded you past killing rabid gryffins yet.â Reaching without much thought, Rita lifted a drink off one of the waitstaff wandering past to swirl it pensively in her hand. Blood traitor tending bar or not, she needed to find a more even keel. She downed a good long sip before she continued. âDo you think that might be something youâll ever get used to? Human executions, I mean.â
At the slight exclamation, Evan gave Rita a good look. He hadnât thought heâd catch her off guard with it because she always seemed so leveled. He raised two fingers, indicating he wanted the same thing she did. She was buying him a round anyways sheâd said. âAzkaban was getting particularly full,â he said aiming for offhanded. âItâs the job, when youâve done one, whatâs another?â Evan had only recently been switched to people and he was still in the process of desensitizing himself. âBut I hear Minchumâs gonna be expanding and increasing dementors in Azkaban so Iâm not executing so many.â Evan paused before pointing. âThis is off the record.â He wasnât so sure it was a secret, it was going to be happening anyways, but he wasnât sure about the ramifications from a front line headline.

âI couldnât tell you what I didnât know.â She hadnât had a hand in organizing this oneâ-the past few weeks had been busy enough for their department that even if sheâd taken an interest in it, she wouldnât have had the time. âThree galleons?â She peered at him suspiciously. âDid you lose a wager?â Her lips quirked up at the teasing question, but she wasnât about to start pouring out more of the manâs praises than she already had, so instead she played into it. âI think for many people itâs always a bit of both, with him. Shall we go say hello? Or would I lose you to their company for the rest of the evening if we did?â
âIâd tell you, but itâs not really for ministry ears,â Edgar grinned cheekily. âBut I can stop by to see them later. I think I would get a little distracted in their company.â He never purposely tried to lose himself in people, but he found that in giving people his full attention, he did have difficulty dispersing it equally. âTell me about work though. Any co-workers here you like, you donât? Unspoken crushes? Gimme the scoop now that you can point out visual aids to me.â Edgar turned away to scan the crowd, zealously.

Amycus wordlessly offered his flask up to his companion. It was moonshine, technically. Tasted a little more refined now that Amycus had been working on his recipe, but it still packed a whallop. âYeah, itâll be a real hard seek-and-find, me and the goblins. Might just be outside of your capabilities, though. Maybe let me know and Iâll wear a nametag.â And still Evanâs mind was in the gutter. Amycus shook his head. âIâll let you keep your plans for the night,â he informed Evan before looking on expectantly he held his hand back out for the flask. âI made that myself.â
The flask Amycus presented Evan with had him feeling dubiously, but after taking a whiff of it, figured what the hell. He let the alcohol coat his mouth for a moment, swishing it, consideringly, before swallowing. It couldâve been refined some, but it sure as hell packed a punch. Evan took a more gracious gulp before handing it back. âItâs nice to know what you do in your free time pays off, Amycus. You workinâ on anything else I should know about?â

Frank smiled over at her, a little unsure of how to respond to Aliceâs compliment. Or atleast, he suspected it was a compliment. Mostly it just made him feel foolish, to always sound like he was showing off or something. It was easier to let that feeling pass, though, and smiled at her story. The stubborn streak on Alice, which he liked best, was a mile wide whether sheâd admit to it, or not. âIâm impressed to see how far youâve come fueled by spite,â he joked, swinging their hands gently between them. âReally, though, look how far youâve come, blood, sweat, and tears. Itâd only be a bad reason if you ever seriously considered doing anything else. Except maybe the family business.â Just thinking about ice cream made him vaguely hungry, but Frank pushed down the thought. âDetermination is what got you all this way.â
The reassurance Frank gave wasnât one she could really find it in herself to reply to. Sometimes he spoke and all she could do was internalize it and consider it more deeply later. Frank had a talent like that. âScooping ice cream during the summers did make my wand arm considerably more buff,â Alice replied, amused before she turned theatrically towards Frank, pulling her hand from him and feigned a hard punch that really only grazed his arm. âHi-yah! Iâm sure you would like that though. If we had nice mundane jobs, one where you get free ice cream. What would you be doing in this dream scenario?â
lumosmoximaâ:
âMy bossâs boss, really.â But she was careful to not sound too put out by that. Just because he had the authority to waste her time, didnât mean she needed to respect him for it. Her attention was redirected, however, when Gust tried to convince her to stay. She bit her lip, indecisive, before smiling. âWell, technically, itâs hospital protocol to have someone available to be on call during Ministry events, just in case something serious happens. But⊠itâs a volunteer duty more than anything else. And I am already here. I suppose I can spare a few minutes.â She looked down at her lime green robes, then over at his much more impressive outfit. âAlthough Iâm not certain I can blend in.â
When Andromeda bit her lip and seemed to take on a look that was hesitatingly mischievous, Gust knew heâd convinced her enough that sheâd convinced herself. He smiled, genially as she agreed before he gave a light shrug. âWhy try to fight an innate quality? You, Andromeda Black, were born to stand out.â The gusto he spoke with took a tone for the dramatic before he settled into a quiet laugh. âYouâve always been a little different and that isnât necessarily a bad thing, I think. If you really are self-conscious, Iâm sure a transfiguration or charm should work well enough.â

Amycus grinned a little. âItâll amaze and astound you to hear this, Rosier, but thereâs more to life than pussy,â he pointed out, reaching into his jacket and carelessly taking a swig from the flask heâd stored there. It was a fifty-fifty shot that some filth was going to be behind the bar, and Amycusâs first instinct had been right. He wouldnât trust that traitor or his rabid pet with anything passing his own lips. âI was thinking about the fact that they donât even look at you right now. Hard to get by on looks alone when youâre standing next to me. I look like a haunted scarecrow. But⊠Emma Vanity? She hasnât figured out she could do better than you, yet?â Maybe she wasnât as smart as she always acted after all, which was a comfort.
âNo offense, Amycus, but thatâs not a life I would like to live.â Watching his companion drink reminded Evan of his own glass and he finished his off before asking conversationally, âWhatâre you drinking?â The self-deprecation coming from Amycus was understandable. He wasnât much to look at compared to himself, and he wasnât being vain. His friend could have used some more grooming time. âAnd what, Carrow? Are you âbetterâ? Remind me to stop by Gringotts, a scarecrow in the midst of goblins has to be a sight.â He snorted and patted him, lightly. âIf you like Emma, you can call her.â And Evan meant it, though he doubted Amycus would.

Frank glanced furtively around them as the few other groups mingling outside the party dwindled to none. âI think theyâre all a little busy,â he stage-whispered to Alice. He squeezed her hand as she slipped it into his and took his time to look back at the vaulted ceiling. Never wise to look up during daytimeâ there were always streams of communication flying above their heads, and the occasional owl. âYâknow, I donât think anyoneâs ever asked me that,â Frank confided. âBut I was twelve, and it was Christmas, and my uncle was reading this story in the Prophet about how some of the top Aurors stopped a bombing at the International Wizards Council. It seemed impossible to me, that they could solve crimes before they even happen. So that was what I wanted to be. It was good to have a couple years of head start to studying Charms, trust me.â
âYeah, I remember that.â The event Frank spoke about, Alice recalled clearly. Itâd been her first year at Hogwarts and people spoke about it for weeks. âYouâre such a good person, Frank, sometimes itâs intimidating. Thatâs a noble reason.â Alice dropped her head to watch their steps, mindlessly syncing hers to his. âMine is kind of spiteful. I didnât know what I wanted to for a long time and I remember talking over things with my parents-- We were just throwing around random things and suggestions. When I said Auror, both my parents laughed. Genuinely laughed. And my dad said he couldnât see me doing something like that. Then I sorta just worked towards it.â There was no way sheâd tell either of her parents that though. âI feel like thatâs a shitty reason,â Alice said.

It took a moment for her to realize there was no emergency. And another moment longer to compute what was actually going on. She had been torn away from work⊠on a lark. Fury slowly began to boil, but as sheâd been trainedâa lady didnât display her inner fire.
Even as she heard the manâReskling, she said to herself, memorizing the nameâcheering his own accomplishments as though he were somehow responsible for the readiness of St. Mungoâs staff simply by being on the Boardâshe forced her hands not to ball into fists. A hand landed on her arm, gentle but firm. She glanced up, and was shocked to see the deep brown eyes she remembered. âGustâŠâ Belatedly she remembered he was working for the Ministry, and she shouldnât be quite so surprised to see him here. âNo, no, Iâm alright. We get far worse in the hospital.â A small smile played around her lips. âI can handle a small massacreâas long as itâs only to my ego.â
âThatâs a positive way to look at it,â Gust mused with a small nod. âIâm sure since youâre on the clock, you might have to get back, but Reskling is somehow your boss and he did tell you to stay. Maybe you could hang around for an hour or so? You can consider it your lunch.â It been a while since heâd seen Andromeda. A few times since heâd graduated Hogwarts. Really, he heard of her mostly, nowadays. She was a great deal grown now. âIâd love to catch up, Andy,â Gust pressed, hope in his voice to convince her.
