15 Ways to Be a Better Partner in 2013

It’s January 2013 – which means that you’ve got New Year’s resolutions coming out to wazoo. We can’t help you lose weight, get out of debt, or quit smoking, but we can help you keep your goal of being a more attentive, in-tune, and committed partner at least a little longer. To start this year off right by your significant other, check out our 15 suggestions on how to be a better spouse – and then feel free to add your own.

1. Kiss each other in the morning and at night.

According to a recent study, eight out of 10 people surveyed don’t kiss their partner before going to bed, and most of us sleep with our backs toward our partners. While it’s hard to change sleeping habits to accommodate comfort, it’s very easy to kiss your partner before heading off to work or dreamland. Give your sweetie at least two smooches a day in 2013 to help bring the sexy back.

2. Say ‘I love you’ at least once a day.

In the same study, 90 percent of participants said they don’t say ‘I love you’ to their partner before going to bed. Whether it’s verbally before leaving the house in the morning or a quick text mid-afternoon, get back in the habit of telling your partner how much they mean to you on a regular basis.

3.  Make at least one night a week No-Device Night.

We live in a fast-paced world, but sometimes you’ve gotta slow things down. So you and your partner can enjoy at least a couple hours of uninterrupted honey time, turn off your devices – phone, tables, computer, etc. – and concentrate on each other for a bit.

4. Plan a surprise outing every four to six weeks.

Want to make your partner smile? Plan a special event every month or so – a concert, comedy show, or wine tasting are just a few ideas – where you two can kick back and enjoy an activity together.

5. Turn off the TV during dinner at least one night a week.

The boob tube doesn’t need to be on every time you sit down to eat. Six days a week is more than enough, so resolve to turn it off at least one night while you dine.

6. Plan at least one meal a month that you’ll cook together.

Cooking is sexy, but even sexier when it’s done together. Once a month, plan a meal you’ll both enjoy and have a great time cooking it together.

7. Double date at least once a month.

Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Social Work say that double dating is beneficial to a marriage by helping solidify a couple’s sense of themselves as a unit and can increase partners’ attraction to one another. Call up your best couple friends and hit the town more often this year to increase your chances of having a better relationship.

8. Plan a quick private weekend getaway at least twice this year.

Sure, you travel, but is it specifically designed to benefit your relationship? This year, plan at least two weekend getaways for only you and your partner to relax and reconnect. It could be a mini beach vacay, a camping trip, or a weekend at the casino. Whatever it is, make it happen so you can get the quality time started.

Sometimes it’s the little things in life that remind us how lucky we are. Here are 14 activities that you can do for your sweetie in less than 5 minutes that will solidify your status as the best thing that ever happened to them.

1. Write a Love Note

Whether it’s on a piece of paper that you stick in their pocket, briefcase, purse, or lunchbox, or a quick message on a steamed-up bathroom mirror, take a minute to express your love and gratitude for your better half in writing.

2. Send a Sweet Text

When your partner is having a stressful day, you can make it better by sending a text message that lets them know that they’re still the one.

Plan a Romantic Candlelit Dinner at Home

You’ve gotta start somewhere, so why not at the beginning. Invite your partner to a romantic candlelit dinner, just the two of you, at home. Set the table. Use the good dishes. Pick up fresh candles. Formally making a date out of it in advance is important because it reduces the chance of your night being rescheduled or having your hopes dashed because one of you has to work late or do something else that gets in the way. Plan for it, put it on the calendar, and don’t cancel unless it’s a life or death situation.

Choose a Recipe that Contains Aphrodisiac Ingredients

You can make your partner’s favorite meal, but let’s face it – there’s nothing sexy about pot roast and mashed potatoes with gravy. In fact, not only are his favorite meals totally not hot, they’re probably very heavy – which defeats the purpose of taking this dinner to the bedroom. Effective Ways for Newlyweds to Work Through Their First Big Fights

Marriage is meant to be bliss – at least in theory – but we all know that no relationship is perfect. You love each other, of course, but there will be times that you just don’t see eye to eye.

While these spats come and go – and they’re healthy for your relationship – in the heat of the moment it may seem like the end of the world (or, worse, your marriage). Newlyweds, in particular, can have a tough time handling an argument – especially if it’s the first one.

The main thing to remember, however, is that this will blow over. And to make sure of that, here are a few ways to effectively handle your first big fights.

1. Choose Your Battles Wisely

If you’re looking for a fight, you’re going to get one. Thus, the best way to avoid confrontation is to let some things slide. If clothes lying on the bedroom floor or dishes in the sink bother you, mention it to your partner before it becomes an out-of-hand habit that you can’t handle; communication is key, and you don’t want to keep your thoughts bottled up until you explode. That said, you don’t have to nitpick everything your partner does that you wish they wouldn’t, either. We all have our idiosyncrasies that the other may not be fond of, but that doesn’t give anyone the right to take on the roll of drill sergeant; nobody wants to be in a relationship with their mother. Sit down and discuss what issues you have with each other and work toward an amicable resolution.

2. Don’t Let Emotions Run Amuck

Emotions run high during arguments – otherwise, they wouldn’t be arguments – but they don’t have to reach meltdown status. Don’t let yourself get too worked up over something that may be nothing. Also – and we know this is hard – try not to drudge up the past or call names. Neither one of those tactics is helpful, and you’ll feel bad about the low road you took once you’ve made up.

3. Listen – No, Really!

You make think you’re right – and maybe you are – but that doesn’t mean that your partner doesn’t have valid points, too. Take a breath, compose yourself, and listen to what he or she has to say. Maybe you misinterpreted whatever drove you into the argument, or perhaps you just see the situation from different-but-equally-valid points of view. Whatever the scenario, it’s OK. You should, however, give each other uninterrupted time to explain how you see things. You’ll resolve the problem much quicker when you open your ears instead of your mouth.

4. Respect Your Partner’s Opinion

You don’t have to accept your partner’s opinion, but you should respect it. Part of being in a grown-up relationship is the ability to agree to disagree. There will be some arguments that neither of you will “win,” but that doesn’t mean the discussion has to end. Express what’s on your mind, so each of you knows exactly where the other stands. Understanding how and what the other is thinking will help you avoid these confrontations in the future.

5. Seek the Advice of Others

One of the great things about marriage is that you inherit a large community of people to turn to when the going gets tough. Whatever problems you’re experiencing in your marriage, you can bet that someone you know has gone through the same thing. Reach out to your married friends for support when you and your partner hit a rough patch; it’s completely acceptable and often beneficial to the relationship. Your friends can give you the advice you’re looking for – and some advice you’re not looking for if they think you’re being stubborn. Just remember that while it’s all right to reach out for a shoulder to lean on, it’s you and your partner who ultimately need to talk it out.

6. Say You’re Sorry

If you’re on the wrong side of the argument, it’s in your best interest to acknowledge why your partner is upset, apologize, and give him or her time to cool off. There’s no benefit in dragging out an argument for argument’s sake if you know that you’re in the wrong. That tactic will breed resentment, and, frankly, your partner will think you’re even more foolish for defending whatever stupid thing it is you’re fighting about. Just say you’re sorry and move on.

7. Never Go to Bed Angry

We’ve all heard this one before, and even though it’s old it will never be outdated. Going to bed mad at one another sucks, plain and simple. Neither of you wants to kiss, or hug, or cuddle, which defeats the whole purpose of sharing a bed with the one you love. Use this opportunity to talk more about what’s bothering you in hopes of reconciling – which, by the way, is much more likely to happen in bed because that’s where we’re most vulnerable. Plus, the pros outweigh the cons here: You can go to sleep with a frown on your face or you can squash your beef and get naked? The latter is always the better option.
