“Go to the winter woods: listen there, look, watch, and “the dead months” will give you a subtler secret than any you have yet found in the forest.” ~William Sharp
8ctoshot:
Magic? Like- magic? What? Eight almost asks if the guy is squidding him, but decides against it. He’s gone flying with a dragon and spent the past few months talking with actual humans; magic really shouldn’t be surprising at this point.
“It’s…” nothing, he wants to say, but it seems a little late for that now. He drops his hand and takes a step back, letting the armoured man have a full view of the plant while keeping his back covered. “It’s just some kind of plant I found. It wasn’t covered by snow, and when I touch it, the leaves curl up…” He pauses. “Just- there’s nothing like this back where I’m from. I wasn’t trying to hurt it. I was just curious.”
Definitely a child, then. It’s always - not just sad but something else too, something more direct - when he comes across one used to combat.
You’re not in trouble, he almost says. It seems an unusual thing to tell a stranger like this. But he has to say something reassuring. What kind of person would he be if he didn’t?
He’s used to his voice by now, but he knows it’s unsettling. He tries to make it gentle. “I doubt you were hurting it.” Just touching a plant shouldn’t do that. He studies it - it looks sick, or damaged, but of course it would if the leaves were curled up. He gestures to it with his hand. “May I see it?”
