Overwatch Passes 30 Million Users, Is A Good Game
Overwatch, the popular online first-person shooter video game created by Blizzard Entertainment, surpassed 30 million registered players as of last week. The game was originally released in May of 2016 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles as well as on PC, and has since steadily increased its player base over the last 11 or so months.
Blizzard Entertainment has created some of the most popular video games in history, including World of Warcraft, Starcraft, and Hearthstone. Overwatch, the company’s latest release, started with 7 million players just in its first week of release, and has gained an average of around 2.2 million players each month, hitting 15 million players last August and 25 million players by late January 2017.
Speaking from personal experience, Blizzard Entertainment has done a great job of ensuring that the community for Overwatch is accessible, engaging, fun, and responsive to user feedback (i.e. if players think a certain character or ability is too strong or a certain game mode can be tweaked, Blizzard will usually either put out a statement to the community regarding the issue or change it and update the game).
Though there are a lot of playable characters (each with their own set of abilities, strengths, and weaknesses), the community is welcoming of new players (as evident from the game’s growing player base) and makes sure everyone has a fun time with the game. The subreddit on Reddit for Overwatch has over 840,000 subscribers, and is one of the biggest video game based communities on the site.
Like other games (i.e. Pokemon Go) Overwatch has seasonal events every so often to provide new content to the game and to keep the players engaged and interested. The current event is titled “Uprising”, and past events have included a Halloween event, a Winter holiday event, and a Chinese New Year event.
Having a great community and with a good developer such as Blizzard behind it, I believe Overwatch will continue to grow in size.
