Singapore diaries
French fries are actually not so bad. But the only thing is that if you have too much of it it can really get on your nerves . Recently when I was in Singapore vacationing , I was having a really really hard time trying to decide what to eat when there was no vegetarian option be it in Sentosa island , Universal studios or even the cafeteria at the Sea aquarium .It was something out of pure desperation that I had to survive for three consecutive days with just french fries as the only vegetarian option. In the past 30 yrs of my life ,I have never been at so much of a loss as to what I should eat ;the only options around me being seafood which I will never ever be able to push down my throat and french fries .The smell of the seafood itself was so nauseating to me but in the oriental countries seafood is the most sought after and by that I also refer to the other type of non vegetarian options. We spent the first day in the Sentosa island. It kick started with a cabin car ride to the island. It was a city within a city. I had been only to a few amusement parks which were huge but this was humongous. Hordes of tourists thronged about and after buying a ticket I was pretty confused as to where I should start because the a large variety of attractions were offered . Ranging from the butterfly forest to the bird park , the wonders of nature were for all to see. I came to the Madame Tussuads wax museum a soon as I entered . Strolling by casually with cup full of fresh fruits in hand, I soon found myself in front of a gigantic man made water fall and the famous Sentosa lion . I tried to take some photos of the rainbow coloured parrots there but the park officials restricted me from doing so . The Light and Sound show was held later in the evening around 7 and was something spectacular. The 3D laser beams were in perfect sync with the oohs and aahs of tourists. I was in complete awe of the Flower Dome and the Cloud Castle ,and later decided to indulge in dimsums, one of my favourites, only to find a chef vigorously cutting a lobster. Right next to it was a crab resigned to it s fate . I won t bother u with the rest of the details ; I m sure all my other veggie friends must be having their fair share of nightmares. Once through with the inspection of my dimsums, I made my way out only to find myself in the Flower Dome again where it is perpetual spring. Universal Studios was a sight to behold with its own Sea aquarium full of varied aquatic life - blue frogs, spider crabs, eels, starfish, rayfish to mention only a few. Candylicious : the candy store - a child s dream come true , was a store full of candies and other goodies too. They had shopping carts high enough for a child of about 6-7years . Sections were allotted to chocolates from Kit Kat, Hersheys, M&M's among others and candies. Here my dear nephew bought a pair of disgusting looking boxers . Here, I was greeted politely by streetside vendors offering more potato wedges and caramel popcorn. The Universal Studios were identical to the Disneyland in Hong Kong. The only difference being that the latter was full of rides for all age groups but Universal Studios had both . There were plenty of souvenirs to choose from and all the comic characters who have featured in animated films produced by Universal Studios were there. Each section had been assigned a comic character be it the Smurfs or the Minions. Had it not been for some indian restaurants I would not have managed to come back home. After each meal came a loud burp -from my side of the table - my compliments and blessings to the chef. My advice to those travelling to Singapore would be to have an umbrella handy in case mother nature decides to shower her blessings upon you in her fashion and of course several packets of packaged meals . Very soon I shall set out on a new adventure without any pre planning. Only to find myself staying in the godowns or garages of strangers and sampling the varied local dishes- veg of course .Until next time then .
Down in the dumps !
In my early years , I was the most clueless and confused person as to what I would become. Very often when friends and family asked me wht do you want to become after you finish your studies? With a weak smile , I would reply that it was undecided . I would just go along wth the flow. Wherever life takes me. But being the youngest of three siblings and over protected , I guess I was destined to get married. Probably the last thing my brothers wanted was me to go into the corporate world where i would have slog 18 hours a day and my father who loved me to the marrow of his bones replied with a strict no when I asked for his permission. Well , I got married a year after I graduated. The marriage did not last and I soon found myself flustered with awkward questions. It was so embarrassing tht I stopped socialising altogether. Not that I had been a social butterfly earlier but neither was I a recluse . The year I had a separation my brother passed away. I could not understand which was the greater loss. I would often cry myself to sleep careful not to let my mother know . But I knew that she knew. My swollen and red rimmed eyes did not leave much scope for questions or explanations. My friends advised me to move on and become involved with another man but I had given up on men . My ex-husband had hurt me so deeply that I could never trust another man . My late brother had earlier sat down and explained in the most serious tone that the separation would certainly shatter me emotionally and separated would be tattooed invisibly on my forehead. His last conversation with me proved to be prophetic . Frustrated with life, I even contemplated suicide but the very thought of my lifeless body dangling from the ceiling and its aftereffects ; discouraged me . When I was going through some blogs, I soon realized that I could start my own . My communication skills had improved since school. I used to read a lot and this really helped me out. This is the sole reason why I am writing this blog today and who knows somehow and someday I may make some e-friends.
3 reasons to grow a funny bone
"To thrive in life you need three bones- A wishbone, A backbone And a funny bone " -Reba McEntire When I came across this quote , I had no idea as to what a wishbone was. After googling it , I found myself smiling at how a tradition started by the ancient Romans could thrive through centuries and yet still be popular. It is now looked upon as a symbol of luck in the English countries and followed as a custom . Come to think of it, what would be the fate of the romantic Leonardo DiCaprio of Titanic and the rustic Johnny Depp of Pirates of Carribean; being torn apart by their respective admirers as if they were the two ends of a wishbone . If this were to happen in real life , witnesses to this incident would end up in splits. A few days back , my friend was whining about her daughter' s whereabouts . An app by the name of Wishbone was found guilty . This app is a social network and most of the surveys done center around girls fashion, interests and celebrities. Conclusion - this is not an app good enough for youngsters ( as if they pay heed to us ) . "There are only three things a girl needs to survive in life : food , water and compliments ". I advised her that it may be very much possible that her daughter is not receiving the much needed attention and that is why as a much needed yet safe alternative , she has had to resort to these apps . Coming to the second part of the quote ,a back bone is considered to be the the most important part of the human body. It is often said that a person without a backbone is physically and mentally weak with no social standing whatsoever. I strongly believe in this ,(not because I am one of those ill fated ones) I have and to the present day am going through a phase where I don t stand anywhere socially. " To survive in life a person needs a wishbone , backbone and a funny bone "- if this quote were to be considered true then all our celebrities would have been considered to have backbones filled with some unbreakable metal and the measly housewives would have to make do with glass ones. Take for example , Priyanka Chopra of the much acclaimed series of Quantico . If and when , she would get an x-ray of her backbone done , the doctors would admire this astonishing miracle of God ; a platinum one in place of the calcium backbone , always prone to breakage. And wear and tear with age. The funny bone is considered to be the most ticklish part. There are two camps in the debate over why the funny bone is so called . One side says that it's an anatomical pun, because the nerve runs along the humerus, which sounds like humorous.(Get it?) The other side claims that the nerve got its nickname because of the funny (as in odd) feeling you experience after you hit it. Whatever ! I'm one of those who are the least interested in anatomy. Funny bone means to have a good sense of humour. So " Grow a funny bone "means " You don't have a sense of humor " . You might say it if you make a joke and someone gets unreasonably offended by it. The expression " grow a funny bone " has been in use in since a long time . Of course someone made it up at some point of time. As a Bollywood film addict, for the funny bone there can be none better than Prem Chopra as a living example ,my favourite villain from yesteryears . Who would nt laugh at his epic daunty and unforgettable dialogue "Mera naam Chopra hai. Prem Chopra" ? And if you would nt i would just say : " For God s sake , grow a funny bone ."
