Wang Yibo as Lan Wangji
Okay so I’ve heard that people had a bunch of opinions about Wang Yibo as Lan Zhan and while I understood them at first, as the series progressed, I found myself less and less inclined to agree with their criticism because the boy actually nails Lan Zhan’s ability to convey his emotions through minute changes. Honestly, I could wax poetry about how he understands the character but that’ll be too long so I’m just going to showcase how perfect he is as Lan Zhan just by the looks he gives to those around him.
1. The way he looks at his brother, Lan Xichen: expression is open, slightly contrite as if he knows there’s nothing he can hide from him
2. The way he looks at the disciples: brows furrowed slightly for a sterner gaze, he’s not joking around
3. The way he glances towards Jin Ling right as he’s about to seal his mouth: like he’s merely a small disturbance, clearly shows who’s boss with that slightly haughty look
4. The way he (never) looks at Jiang Cheng: man was literally the cause of Wei Ying’s death, you can’t expect Lan Zhan to give him any good looks or acknowledgement
5. The way he looks at Jin Guangyao: acknowledgement his presence by looking at him but you can see it’s not an open expression either, Lan Zhan’s clearly got his guard up
6. The way he (barely) looks at women: he looks so bored someone get him outta there
7. Finally, the way he stares (yep he stares) at Wei Ying: just look at how mesmerized he looks, the adoration, the helplessness he feels when he comes to Wei Ying, the slight sense of wonder as if he can’t quite believe a person like Wei Ying exists, the openness of his expression that I don’t even think he realizes, the intensity behind his stare when Wei Ying’s literally too thick to understand the meaning behind his words... phew
Honestly, if it wasn’t for the 10 picture limit, I’d be posting a lot more pics but alas. Honestly, Yibo’s also only 22 years old and hasn’t been acting for that long so I understand him not being perfect; however, given how difficult Lan Zhan is as a character, I give him full marks for how he’s been approaching this character.
From the initial annoyance of Wei Ying’s mere presence, to the acknowledgement of his open and honest character, to the increasingly blurry line between friendship and love, to Lan Zhan desire to help Wei Ying and subsequent helplessness because he isn’t sure how to, to his more mature approach to Wei Ying after reuniting with him after 16 years (Lan Zhan learned his lesson from the first time around, he’s not going to repeat the same mistakes twice), you can see all of this in Yibo’s acting.

Horrible MDZS “Facts”
The last time Wei WuXian touched Suibian and was able to use it, he gave it to Wen Chao. The next time he touched it he couldn’t and Wen Chao was stabbing him with it.
The 1,000 new rules in Gusu when Wei WuXian returns were mostly because of him and Lan Wangji. Various banning of Demonic Cultivation techniques and associating with people who use it.
Jin ZiXuan wanted to love Wei WuXian and Jiang Cheng the way the Jiang Yanli did, not just for her, but for himself too because real, intimate family was a wish he always had. He died trying to achieve it.
When Jiang Yanli watched her husband walk away from her for the last time, she had full confidence he would come back.
Wei WuXian broke a lot of bones and organs when he hit the ground after being thrown into the Burial Mounds. That’s why he couldn’t escape.
Jiang Cheng had to rip down the Wen flags on Lotus Pier alone. Wei WuXian was stalking the Wens with Demonic Cultivation and Jiang Yanli was being kept with the healers away from the front lines when Wen Chao left Lotus Pier fleeing Wei WuXian.
Jiang Cheng spent the night after the Burial Mounds siege deciding if he should put a tablet for Wei WuXian in the Jiang ancestral hall, then decided not to because “he’s going to come back.”
Lan XiChen decided to help kill the man he knew was the love of his brother’s life. He kept him in the dark to keep him from dying defending him, then took responsibility and told Lan Wangji when they returned the Wei WuXian was dead.
For 13 years, Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng paused beside the shop that sells Emperor’s Smile, but one went in sometimes and the other never did.
For 13 years, Jiang Cheng was the only person that could spot every difference between how Lotus Pier had been and the way it was now.
I know it was an accident (according to Ji Li), but my favorite part in the whole series is when Nie Huaisang is holding Guangyao’s hat and looks down to see blood on his hands.
It is so perfectly poetic and it amazes me that it wasn’t intentional.
Nie Huaisang kept his hands clean until the very end and only when the devil was defeated were his hands stained red. He was the final blow against Guangyao- though he made Xichen take the honor of striking it.
Huaisang made Xichen his weapon partly because he knew how it would all play out- the other cultivators were ready to kill Wuxian on sight, but even after seeing all the evidence against him in Lotus Pier and hearing the women’s testimonies they still were trying to reason things out in Guangyao’s favor. To find a way to justify what he did. They would undoubtedly have found a way to let him off the hook.
Jin Guangyao would probably have ended up in Cloud Recess, in some cushy prison with the man he loved watching over him day and night. Meanwhile Huaisang is left alone in a cold, hard fortress without his brother by his side.
So Huaisang decided Guangyao needed to die in that temple.
Xichen might have been a victim of proximity- a quick and easy tool to use to kill Guangyao… or maybe his plan all along was to use Xichen to kill Guangyao so he would have to live with that forever. Nie Mingjue told him over and over again that the boy couldn’t be trusted and Xichen refused to listen. Xichen sat across from Guangyao as he ripped Nie Mingjue apart with the Lan Clan’s own research materials and never suspected a thing.
So Huaisang pulled the strings just right. He brought as much light into the world as darkness by having Mo Xuanyu unleash Wei Wuxian. And only at the end of it all- when all that was needed was a tiny little push- did Nie Huaisang finally get his hands dirty.

Hashirama: Morse code.
Madara: *aggressively taps table*
Tobirama: *slams hands down* YOU TAKE THAT BACK
thinking about madara and how kishi and the burrito writers stripped all the mythological intrigue of the narutoverse for what? to justify a war machine? to promote jingoism? to pretend like madara did what he did cuz of the moon lady and not because he was a soldier for most of his life and didn’t think hashirama’s brand of fascism was the answer to peace? madara was so damn scary half the time BECAUSE he knew how dirty the shinobi nations really were, caught them slipping, and realized the only solution to war and fascism and child soldiers and murder and human trafficking and slavery was an eternity spent under an illusion cuz he had NO other answer for all the horrors in the world, a lot of it pushed by konoha to maintain its power, so he went straight to option #8991 and tried to implement a universal illusion cuz nobody socialized his ass after the wars, NOBODY PUT HIS ASS IN THERAPY AND HELPED HIM HEAL, CUZ NOBODY TRIED TEACHING HIM SOMETHING BEYOND WAR AND POLITICS SO HE CONTINUED THE VICIOUS CYCLE AND MANIPULATED PEOPLE LIKE OBITO, CUZ NOBODY WANNA TAKE RESPONSIBILITY THAT THERE WERE PROBABLY TEN THOUSAND MADARAS IN EVERY NATION CREATED BY THE WAR ECONOMY, BUT NONE SMART OR POWERFUL ENOUGH TO GET WHERE MADARA DID BUT IF THEY HAD A CHANCE THEY WOULD’VE, AKA NAGATO WAS RIGHT FROM THE START
It took a lot of willpower to push the post button NGL
