Yes, Jonathan was getting everything and noting what Brendan was saying. No, did he think that someone could talk so much about cinema. “Alright,” he said with a switch to an uneasy tone, raising his eyebrows and looking wide-eyed for a couple of seconds. “I’m sure we can head there and ask, but your knowledge is valued. What’s the bad thing about Dope?”
“What?” he tilted his head to the side, following Jonny’s train of thought just as well as he was following Brendan’s. If anyone were to ask him, the problem was that Jonathan didn’t talk enough. There wasn’t enough for him to make sense of, so he didn’t. “You did say we live, like, fifteen minutes away from the film capital of the US—figured that you’d want to learn more about it. Don’t give me that look.” Brendan wiped his hands against his shorts, peering behind the manager’s desk while he talked, “Maybe that it’s about dope but that’s not what I was talking about. It sucks that nothing else is out ‘cause you don’t have much to choose from. You could try Ant-Man, I guess.”
Well, in fairness, I did do quite a lot.
Okay so it’s safe for me to ask—it doesn’t sound really Freudian so far. What did you do?
Oh my goodness. Today was exhausting. But fun. But mostly exhausting.
Do I want to know what the cause for “exhaustion” was or no?
I.. Don’t know. I didn’t experience your weekend.
How’d you experience it, then? Apparently—well, this is what my parents’ve been telling me, my weekend isn’t the ideal. Don’t think I’m in my neighbor’s good graces anymore, either.
“Okay, say that I’d like to see a movie but, I don’t really know movies, like not at all. See, I figure since I don’t have work today or anything else, nothing to do. And I’m so close to the film capital itself but have never watched such, so what do you think?” He tapped the film listing on the theatre lobby’s wall before running his hand through hair.
“First lesson of the crash course: films and movies are the same thing. You could call The Hangman’s Curse a film, if you wanted to. It doesn’t just go for things with accolades. So if you’ve watched a few movies, you’ve watched a few films—no matter if you’re familiar with them or not.” Brendan spoke mostly without pauses: he had to explain this to most of his family members, too. They humored him, then asked his parents why his head was in the clouds so much. He let the non-respectability of his personality slide off of him; he could be rational if he really wanted to be. Imitating the guy, he tapped a finger against the wall. “BTW, you’re not gonna learn anything from that. They keep movie summaries behind the manager’s desk, you’d be better off asking for one of those. Dope was really fucking good, and—too bad for you—it’s the only thing out worth watching.”
Party? What party? I was at my family’s barbeque. And even if I wasn’t, my brother is seven. If anyone tried to give him booze…
What’s a holiday without a party? A few towns over there’s a huge Flag Day bash, I don’t think a fourth one’s all that weird. Not saying anyone would’ve, don’t go all big bro on me—I’m immune to it.

And it’s not the cops I worry about- it’s her- and if she found drugs on me, she’d have a coronary. [Luka mumbles, talking more to herself than to him. Sure, lots of people knew she was kicked out of her old art program because of vandalizing but no one knew why. Rumor had it that she owed money- and it was true, but she tried to keep it on the down-low.] If she thought I was spending money instead of saving it and spending it on drugs of all things, she’d fucking loose it and I’d loose my hand.
You kiss your mother with that mouth? [ he said it like an inside joke, one that wasn’t likely to go over anyone’s head ]
Besides, is she pretending a healthy love of vandalism is any better? Dunno if it’s true or not, but I’m pretty sure fumes’ll mess with your head worse than a puff of some jank weed. Feel free to tell me whether I’m wrong or not, though—it’s not like I know your bitch of a mother. [ the last part was hushed, seeing as those words wouldn’t have come out of brendan’s mouth in any other context. he didn’t see the big deal in all of this, couldn’t tell anyone why some kids thought their moms mothering them was a cause for anything like that ] Don’t all white kids shrug their parents off, anyway? Maybe that’s just Teddy.
“I didn’t really want to go, at first, but I’m glad I did. It was nice to get away from here and see friends back home. That being said….I’m so glad I’m back… I missed it here. Anything happen while I was gone?”
“Huh?” He pulled a headphone out of his ear, twisting it around his finger—there was a little trick so the circulation in the tip was lost, without so much of the tingly feeling that came with it. That was where his mind was as this girl was talking, and Brendan had to remind himself to pay more attention. He wasn’t sure whether he was acquainted with her or not, either. “Do I know you? I’m Brendan and you’re new-ish, yeah? If you lived in Heffes for more than a school year, you’d know that it slows down like hell during the summer. Where’d you go, anyway? California’s a little far from Mormon country.”
I would say that blue tequila is not a good thing. My puke was like…purple.
Cool. Plus, you know, we are told that all alcohol is a bad thing, pretty sure your blue tequila is part of that. It’s not really a conspiracy, you know?
Once again, you fail to impress me in giving me a new name. [She smirked, mocking him with a mirror of his own expression. getting out of the water and sitting on the edge, she laid back.]

Spacey it is, then. Didn’t your mother tell you to entertain the youngest or were you raised by animals or something? [ he went along with it, not trying to insult her. that went against brendan’s moral code, if that could be considered as it. he sat cross legged at the edge of the pool, quiet for just a second ]
Do you think carrying a blunt in your bag means that you’ll be Piper Chapman? Not like you’d have to worry about it, anyways— Schwarzenegger cared about his people.

Nope. One of my little brothers ate too much potato salad and up-chucked on me during fireworks.
Well, at least now I know how much of plan-killer I was to my siblings. Party’s usually on till after the fireworks, by the way. I’m betting you wouldn’t have been the only one to sneak out after returning your sibs to your parents.

[ he was obviously joking, evident by the smirk on his face and the tone of his voice. luka, for as long as they knew each other, didn’t know how he worked—if she didn’t insist on correcting him every time, brendan would’ve dropped it ]
