This is my entry for The OCC Arcane Idol

류매양 | 柳魅良 | Mae Yang Ryu

Talisman: Dokkaebi mask Equipment: White wooden fan Logo: tattoo on her shoulder

Story She's a performer of the traditional Korean tightrope-walking, Jultagi. She had excellent talent but no one noticed her for being a female jultagi performer. She was very poor and didn't even had proper food every day or proper place to stay. One day, when Mae Yang was almost dying from hunger, she heard a whisper of a mysterious voice. She followed the voice and arrived to a dump of trash. She noticed something sparkling in the trash. It was an ancient dokkaebi mask with golden details. Once she put on her face there was a powerful reaction between the mask and her. Her hair color turned red and her eye color changed to clear gold, just like the mask. With the mask on, she felt so powerful and strong, didn't even feel the hunger anymore. Mae Yang performed with movements that no one have ever seen. Everyone couldn't take their eyes off her. Musical crew and Jesters gathered to help her performance. She became the most famous performer from her country.

Details Before she found the talisman she had not that long black hair and dark brown eyes. She always puts on red eye makeup before performing. She's skilled with martial arts so she can defend from the evil. She also adapts the movements of martial arts to her performance. Having a dokkaebi mask with red hair and golden eyes, many people thought she's a powerful guardian. Only watching her performing they felt more healthy and happy. So they called her the Guardian.

Reference Back at the time, dokkaebi (Korean goblin) were known as guardians that protects people from diseases, misfortune and death, for being more powerful than ghosts. The clouds had meaning of longevity and power. So I've put patterns of clouds on her clothe. The makeup style I took reference from the warriors (Hwarang) of Shilla Dynesty. They put on makeup to show which position they are and the power they have. Jultagi (줄타기) is a traditional Korean tightrope-walking performance. Even nowadays there's not much female performer in this area. These details inspired me for creating Mae Yang Ryu.
