A fanfic based on Devilman that I submitted to a Fandom Kombat challenge (special quest) and that I originally wrote in January (2025) as a bit of comedic dialogue.

Here we have another mix of canons again—because I really love the old-school versions of Akira and Ryo, the manga, and the two old OVAs (imprinting plus a general love for the old designs and vibes), but the 2018 version by director Yuasa - Crybaby - is very auteur-driven, with controversial choices and changes, uneven pacing, a cramped script, altered characters, and so on, yet I still like it. It has some awesome choices and very powerful scenes, and the modernity of the world and the characters has its own merits. In a way, in my humble opinion, this isn’t just a film adaptation for the 45 anniversary of Go Nagai’s work, but also a fanfic approved by Nagai himself (?) (I read that they consulted with him on all the changes).
Plus, Crybaby brings the story to a conclusion and the way it loops back… It leaves room for creativity. To the multiverse! Well, you can view it as the tragic hopelessness of a Groundhog Day scenario, or you can…
Someday I’ll write a fanfic based purely on the manga. Based purely on the OVA. And based purely on Crybaby. But for now - that’s it.
In my usual style, I ran through 100,500 different versions of time loops and worlds in my head and ended up writing only the final-fixit-post-canon version. Reehani read the roughest draft, asked questions, or suggested what was missing (feedback ✨🤲 ), after which it clicked for me and I wrote and polished it with inspiration (I also put together some awesome fanart visual support for myself, which I rarely do; a real treat for the eyes). Reehani says that in this fic I have an unusually large amount of descriptions, and they turned out well ❤️ and are appropriate - there’s nothing and no one around except these two.
And the risqué conversations were born from a Tumblr crack poll: slash, het, or femslash pairing ryokira 🤣❤️ and while I was tweaking the recorded dialogue and giggling, they pushed me toward a really cool idea about demiurgy!
My fanon for Ryo as Satan (including anatomy) and for Ryo and Akira in general varies, aside from the fact that the manga, OVA, and ONA differ on their own, and it also depends on the story and the goal.
