I really wanted to explore self portraits for this brief and choose a different style than what i'm used to thus why i chose Nan Goldin. Her way of shooting is very intimate and raw and i really admire the way she chooses to shoot the ones closest to her.
This image is "Amanda crying on my bed, Berlin, 1992", i picked this image as it is so raw with emotion, the subject looks complete torn apart by something creating this pure and authentic response to the camera. I love the way her eyes complete give away all the emotions she is feeling in that moment.
the person in this photo i am guessing is either a friend or lover of Goldin as she has said that her subjects have been the ones who are closest to her. Im unsure of where the photo is actually taken except that it is in Berlin, as she lived there for a couple year deciding those years as the happiest of her life.
The photograph first took my interest by the emotion through the image, I'm fascinated with the emotions, how people react and generally the humans way of coping. The image its self is quite realistic creating that relationship with the viewer as you can empathise with the subject as most people have been through something similar.
Without knowing the real reason as to why Amanda is crying i feel maybe the subject has been through heart break or has received some terrible and unexpected news. She looks completely distraught and almost heart broken you could say.
