There has been an awakening.
WHO GETS CARS FOR CHRISTMAS?!?
I hate these damn car commercials! 😡
What kind of normal person buys a car as a Christmas present for someone else?? NO ONE!!
Oh don’t even get me started on car commercials.
Cars are, for most people, an “every 5-10 year” purchase. But the ratio of car commercials to commercials for things people buy weekly or daily, like food? It’s 10-to-1 if not more. It’s never made any sense to me! They advertise cars as if you buy a new one every week! Why?! How does that make sense?!
And who buys a car based on a commercial anyway? I’ve never once heard someone say “Well the commercial made it look so good I had to go out and buy a new Corolla!” Have heard people say that about restaurants or snack foods though.
Maybe if the car companies stopped shitting away tens of millions of dollars on advertising, they could, you know, not go bankrupt? Pay their workers better instead of fighting the unions? Invest the money in R&D and deliver a better product?
The ad ratio is based on the fact that you’ll know all the food brands because you walk past them every week and look at different brands every now and then. Most people don’t go look at different makes and models of cars very often. The typical (US) person probably knows Toyota, Nissan, Ford, Chevy, and Dodge (maybe Tesla). They may know a few other makes, but very few people can tell you who makes all of the different models without remembering advertisements.
Having said that, I’d rather see a car commercial where they show the car cut in half with a full-sized occupant in each front seat, and kids in each back seat (to show head, leg, shoulder, and hip room). While those images are playing on one side, show the important stats (MPG, 0-60 time, towing capacity, gas tank size, cargo space, &c.) on the other. Don’t make the ad fancy or show it doing something absurd on a ‘Closed track with professional driver; do not attempt’. Tell me about the car, don’t try to make it sexy; the only people who by cars for appearance are kids (who need Mummy and Daddy’s money) and folks who have enough money that they could spend all day for months online picking the prettiest car.
