Messaging replacement app for Android
When @dtewfik showed me the updated UI for the groupme app yesterday, I immediately wondered why the default messaging app in Android wasn't as fluid. Being able to switch threads from a fly-in menu make the entire messaging experience far better. I decided, since I'm trying to learn more android development, it might be good practice to redesign the default messaging app with my own UX vision.
Even if I don't quite finish, or get it working exactly how I hope, I know the experience will benefit me in the future. A quick search highlights SMS replacement apps aren't an easy feat in Android as not all the API's the the baked in app uses are available in the SDK. It uses quite a few internal API's and I'll be limited to the external API's. However, it can be done, apps like HandcentSMS and GoSMS have done it.
I came across a blog called Android UI Patterns and saw a post detailing the growing popularity of the dubbed "side-navigation." In it, I've learned that many apps are using public library projects to replicate the fly-in menu. I'm new to Android development still and I've only just realized that many of the "cool" features you see in popular apps (such as this fly-in style menu) are often available as library projects on Github. Two such libraries that I'd like to use are the Sliding Menu and the PullToRefresh libraries.
I'm not sure yet if the PullToRefresh library will be useful in my messaging replacement app, but I absolutely have plans for the Sliding Menu library. No worries though, if I don't use PullToRefresh, it will give me a reason to come up with and hack another app together.
I'm hoping to keep my blog updated with progress. But we'll see how that goes. Knowing me, it will be tough, but so far it's a great way just to keep notes.
