you know, one thing that gets me, that baffles me, that i think from time to time is how Prince of Tennis was this super popular anime/manga for a good couple of years and then one day it disappeared completely. It didn't have a long lasting impact like some other sports anime.

This anime was all over livejournal, fanficton.net, the anime was split into 3 to 4 videos on youtube, it had movies, a million characters songs, a lot of doujinshi, like 100 live plays, tons of cosplayers, people would make video analyses on youtube, tons of shipping discourse, lots of shippable characters, dudebros would have powerscaling discourse. it even had a chinese live action tv show. And the fans ate it all up, me included. People were so obsessed with the live action actors that they started fan accounts and watched their other works.

...then nothing. one day ...nothing. weird. It's like this franchise never existed.

Prince of Tennis Pokémon au :) it’s very convenient that all of Fuji’s three counters are named after animals that have Pokémon counterparts: Swellow for the swallow in tsubamegaeshi, Ursaring for the bear in higuma-otoshi, and Wailord for the whale in hakugei

I’ve been thinking a lot about teams for the others too but I feel like it works surprisingly well— tennis matches as pokemon battles with teams choosing the order of players and those players having individual or doubles matches. I’d write something for it if I had the bandwidth to right now
