Last post for class.
So I have really enjoyed this class overall. I liked this class because we didn't just talk about the basic meanings of each book. We went further into detail and discussed things in each book that were beyond the pages that we read. This definitely wasn't a boring literature class. My least favorite book was The Road and my favorite was The Handmaid's Tale. I hope our final isn't too bad!
So after finishing the book I still wasn't a huge fan. I do appreciate the author trying to show the intense bond between a father and his son and it is deeply moving. I guess I am just not a fan of post apocalypse things. I was kind of sad by the ending but also saw it coming pretty much throughout the whole book. I do like the fact that there was no controlling government force in this book looming overhead. It was a nice change from the other 3 books we have read. I also really liked the simplicity of the story. There wasn't a lot of action packed moments which really was good for me because it exposed the boy and father's relationship and that was the main focus.
April 11th
Well its another wonderful busy week for me so I am writing this post from a humvee in a convoy. I like the road so far and I cannot stop picturing Book of Eli. If you haven’t seen it, it is a wonderful movie and if you have I think you know what I mean. Like as far as the road, the way they travel, the scavengers and especially the cannibalism. what I don’t get is if they boy grew up in that and it’s all he knows how is he so oblivious to problems. I understand he is a kid and all but I feel like his awareness to danger and understanding should be significantly different considering what he has experienced. Especially since going down into the cellar once makes him scared. Seeing all the stuff a few times I get it but all he knows is the bad. Also what bothers me the most is the dad did not help the people. I understand fear and the danger asscioated but how could he look at the people in the grand house and not do anything. I felt he should of helped. If he wants to keep calling them good he has to help people. Anyways hope yall have a good week and are enjoying the book as much as I am.
I also have associated this book with the Book of Eli. It was a good movie and it reminded me alot of this book. I also was upset that the dad did not help the people in the cellar. Part of me though understands why he didn't. If they had stayed and helped out they would have risked themselves being caught just like those people and used as food as well. They only had seconds to spare and it was either their safety or risk getting caught. It's a hard situation to be put in and honestly I'm not sure if I could just walk away like they did. Very difficult.
While I am reading The Road all I can think about is the part in the movie Finding Nemo when Dory sings, “Just Keep Swimming” so I posted that clip from the movie in case anybody hasn’t seen it. Minus the humor I feel like it related to the boy and his father because they literally just keep walking and have nothing to do besides walk south to try to get warm. In the book the two characters really feed off each other. The father stays hard working to keep the boy alive and the boy looks to the dad for protection. The author really focuses on detail throughout the book and it makes me as a reader feel like I am in the book with them.

I agree with you. The two definitely feed off of each other and I think it really shows the love that they both feel towards each other. I think it's neat that the author shows us a relationship between father and son in a different way than most books would. I also like that you tied in the clip from Finding Nemo. It is like they have to just keep walking and they can't stop and stay in one place.
4-8-15. The Road post
So I am almost done with this book and I find it totally disturbing. I appreciate the story line between the father and son and the amount of love there but the world they are in is just derranged. The book is almost monotone to me. It is the same story line and the same setting throughout a lot of the book. I hope that the world never comes to this state of being. It seems like this is the absolute chaos. When people have resorted to eating people it's all over with. And that is scary to me. Definitely not my favorite book.
4-1-15 Some rambling on the ending.
I’ve probably expressed far too much how I just loved The Handmaid’s Tale. To be honest the ambiguous ending did leave me somewhat unsatisfied, and I did not care to read the “Historical Notes” section aside from a light skimming. So the class discussion about the tapes was a revelation to me. I’m really content that the novel ended with at least a more hopeful note than 1984. Well, anything’s better than “He loved Big Brother” in my opinion. The polished, immersive detailed nature of the book made me incredibly invested in learning about Offred’s Journey than what my original precedent had been for it.
I also did not read the historical notes because I thought that it wasn't a continuation of the book rather just explaining some of the principles in the book. I really did enjoy it as well and it did have a much better ending than 1984 did. I guess we can just imagine and wonder what really did happen to Offred when she was taken away and where did they take her to record her story. I guess the only person who really knows is Atwood.

So happy April fools day!!!! I was really disappointed with the ending of this book. I really wanted this book to end with Offred being able to escape and find her husband and daughter. At least she got to record her story though. I really agree with the points we made in class today. Women and men are definitely treated differently in regards to sexuality. This has been my favorite book so far. I have already started The Road and it is very different. Hopefully it is just as good!!!!
Handmaid's Tale
Even though I don’t care for Margaret Atwood’s writing style, especially the constant flashbacks, the book is an interesting look at a potential future society. While the other books talked about the concept of government control of everyone, this one focuses on how women are the ones controlled. The government makes them wear non-form fitting clothes and forces them travel in groups of two to go shopping. Women are even prohibited from reading and writing. The government takes this so far as to only use pictures in the stores that they shop at for the Commanders and their families. I still think the most amusing part (of a very sad and disturbing society) is how Scrabble is considered taboo!

I like how this book is so different from the others that we have read in class prior to this novel. Those both were in the perspective of a male so to see a story through as woman's eyes is pretty refreshing. I think the rules the Handmaid's have to follow are also ridiculous. The fact that they always have to be watched is creepy. Also they can't go anywhere by themselves which is child like. I would absolutely hate to live in this society.

So over spring break I did nothing but study so I am actually through with the Handmaid's Tale. I actually really liked this book a lot. I found myself actually wanting to read it and find out what would happen next. For me this book has been the best so far. The way Atwood told this story was incredible. It truly put the fear in me of this type of world coming true. This is probably more heightened because I am a woman and this book is from the perspective of a woman. Anyways I don't want to give away anything from the book. Hope you all enjoy it like I have!

So far this book is a little strange. The idea of being a handmaid seems crazy to me and like it would be such a terrible life to live. However even though the content of the book seems a little odd I still find it interesting and I like it more than the last two books we read. This book is still dealing with the idea of a corrupt society but there are so many different aspects to this book even the writing style is completely different then it was in the last two books.
I agree with you. I feel like there is a lot of components going on in this book, it does make it more confusing but it also makes it more interesting to me. I also think being a hand maid would be a terrible way to live. It's like your body wouldn't even belong to you. I would hope that this would never happen to our society. It seems like such an unfair way of life and I wouldn't want that to ever happen to me.

So I'm so glad we are halfway through this class. It seems like it has gone very quickly. Contrary to some of the feelings about this book I really like it! I guess because it's different than the other books because it's in the perspective of a woman. I like that because it's different that the other books we have looked at. I think that the ideals in this book are extremely creepy. The thought of being a hand maid without having any say in what happens to you is totally awful. I hope Offered can find her family and be reunited with them. That would be a great ending but I'm not so sure that will happen. We will see!!!

I agree. Although it's kind of impossible to disengage in technology people need to think about what the government is really doing to us through technology. Although I had read both of these books before I am coming away from these reading with that thought in mind. I'm excited to start new books and I also really liked group discussions.
Midterm post 3-4-14
Well I am certainly glad that we are through with Fahrenheit 451 and 1984. The beginning of the class was all pretty much review for me so it will be a fresh start to finally get to read books that I haven't read yet. The books that we are starting both look very interesting. I am not really sure if we were supposed to post this week but oh well!

I agree with you completely. I so expected this book to have such an interesting ending to go along with the book. The beginning and middle were so detailed. There was some slow parts through but there was also a significant amount of action to offset the boring parts. I still did not really like this book but maybe if the ending would have been better I would feel differently.. ?
2-24-15 1984 final post
So I am extremely glad I am done with the book 1984. I honestly didn't like it just because it was pretty slow it more than one part of the story. I was pretty disappointed with the ending. I wanted Winston to revolt against the party and get his revenge. I also wished he would have been happy in the end. He didn't seem to be happy with the way his life was. Overall the book had a creepy feel just because of the total control the government had. It is scary that we already have that sense of control in our world today and we choose to do nothing about it because we are so accustomed to it. I think that George Orwell was well ahead of his time with writing this book.
As I sit here next to my uncles hospital bed I try to think of some way to get back on track with my school work and what to blog about. I remembered last class we talked about Sophie’s Choice and I realize I relate to this at a smaller scale. As I am spending my last days with my beloved uncle...

I agree with you. Chapter 9 was so tough to get through. I had to reread multiple parts because it was so hard to keep focused. I also figured it would be O' Brien to turn them just because they had gone to his house and discussed the brotherhood. I also thought they would just kill him and be done with him. It seems like a lot less trouble to do that then to keep him and continue to torture him the way that they did.
