warning: this is a alternative universe, set to michigan days, because colston never went to michigan before 21 hes 20 and underage drinking, welcome to college life. toxic relationship between reader and colston, usage of y/n..
It had been a few days since the breakup happened, and Y/N had finally started convincing herself she was fine. The breakup itself hadn't even been some massive betrayal. There hadn't been cheating. There hadn't been screaming. No dramatic public scene.
Just one stupid night where she'd looked through Colston's phone, found something tiny, completely harmless in hindsight, and let her insecurities spiral until it turned into an argument neither of them could win.
Now they were broken up.
Technically.
Which was why hearing pounding at her apartment door at almost midnight made her immediately roll her eyes.
She checked her Ring camera and immediately could not believe what she was seeing, the sight was Colston standing there swaying, extremely intoxicated if you’d ask anyone.
Behind him stood a few of his teammates who looked fed up already the way he was acting like a little baby.
"What the hell?" Y/N muttered.
The Ring speaker crackled.
"What?" Colston slurred his speech, making it 10x worse.
"You are drunk."
"I'm not drunk."
He almost fell backward, and Donovan caught him by the arm fast before he did faceplant onto the ground, “Brother, you’re drunk as a skunk.”
"Mind your business.”
Y/N pinched the bridge of her nose, "No."
"Open the door."
"No."
"I wanna talk."
"No."
"I want my girl back."
As soon as he said that, every single boy groaned because he’d been through this numerous times saying the same thing to her.
JJ who was visiting for the weekend covered his face, “Dude..”
Y/N sighed, “Colston, go home.”
"That is home."
"You don't live here."
"I basically do."
"You absolutely don't."
He pointed dramatically at the camera, "See? This what I'm talking about."
She rolled her eyes, though he couldn’t tell through the camera.
“You keep being mean..”
"I'm being mean?"
"You broke up with me."
Y/N could’ve laughed in his face for being so stupid, but kept her laugh controlled, "I broke up with you because I found something on your phone."
“It was nothing at all bro.”
“Firstly it wasn’t nothing to me, secondly I’m not your bro.”
The argument instantly started all over again, while JJ and Donovan both wished they were anywhere BUT here.
"You know other dudes are in my DMs right?" Y/N shot back.
The entire group went silent, JJ’s mouths dropping lower than ever. Was that the wrong thing to say to a drunk person? Sure, but was it needed? In Y/N’s eyes absolutely.
His drunken eyes snapped back to reality at the doorbell.
"What?"
She smirked, "You heard me."
"What dudes?"
"That's not important."
"What dudes?"
"Colston-"
"What dudes?"
Donovan stepped in immediately, “I think thats enough for tonight-”
“Nope, let her talk.”
It was silent from Y/N’s end for a second until Colston finally spoke up.
“You keep playin’ with me and pushing me I swear-.”
Both men who were holding him up looked mortified while on the other side Y/N was extremely annoyed. This entire conversation was childish to her, but unfortunately it was very much them.
Their relationship had always been toxic in ways that somehow made sense only to them.
Michigan students had bets on how many times they'd break up and get back together in a semester.
At this point nobody asked questions about their relationship status anymore.
Then Colston suddenly grabbed his stomach.
His face went pale, which he already was half the time, but he went ghostly white.
"Oh no."
Colston pointed at the door.
"Bro."
Donovan sighed.
"Y/N."
"No."
"Please."
"No."
"He's gonna throw up."
"Not my problem."
"Y/N."
"No."
"Please."
"He already fought a frat guy tonight because they were talking about you."
Her eyebrows shot up.
"What?"
The boys exchanged looks as JJ sighed.
"Some frat dude was saying stupid stuff."
"Colston didn't like it."
"There was a fight."
"Then he got drunk."
"Now we're here."
Y/N looked through the camera.
Colston was definitely about five seconds away from throwing up.
"Oh my God."
"Please let us in."
"Please."
"We don't wanna clean that up."
Y/N sighed heavily then walked to her door from her bedroom, and the second the room opened the boys dragged Colston in.
He made it exactly halfway across the kitchen before suddenly lunging toward the sink, and the sound that followed that was brutal making everyone look away.
Y/N looked traumatized, Donovan looked traumatized, hell the sink looked traumatized. At one point Colston's eyes were literally closed while he was still somehow mumbling.
"I miss her."
Another retch, "I love her."
More retching.
JJ whispered, "He is fighting demons."
By the time it was over, Y/N's kitchen looked like a disaster zone.
Her jaw dropped.
"My security deposit."
The boys helped clean up while Colston stood there half asleep trying to find the words to apologize but him being drunk meant his brain was foggy, JJ moved him to the couch with a bottle of water, a bottle of Gatorade and a trash can.
And in that moment, Colston removed his shirt because he thought it was optional, lone and behold 30 minutes later he was unconscious.
One arm hanging off the couch with his mouth slightly open, not moving so JJ and Donovan decided to leave out.
Leaving Y/N alone with her ex boyfriend, who was shirtless on her couch knocked out almost into a coma. She threw a blanket on him, her least favorite one and went to bed, and around 4 AM she felt movement beside her.
Then warmth from a body, before his semi tatted arm wrapped around her waist. Her eyes opened, panicking before smelling his cologne under all the alcohol he had earlier that night.
The idiot she hated at the moment had moved from the couch to her bed, he was now half asleep with his face buried in her shoulder.
His arm tightened around her, “You awake?”
"Barely."
He got closer, more comfortable like he’d never left or broken up with her. Like this was normal, which made their dynamic even worse. She hated how his body manipulated her feelings, how familiar it was, how safe it felt.
A few seconds later he lightly grabbed her chin after tilting his head up, “Kiss?”
She recoiled in disgust, “Hell no.”
"What?"
"Absolutely not."
His eyebrows rose up, "What I do?"
"Your breath."
"What about it?"
"You threw up in my sink."
He blinked, "Oh."
"You need a toothbrush."
He looked genuinely offended at that remark.
"Brush your teeth first."
"Then kiss?"
"Maybe.”
A smile slowly appeared on his face, the first real smile since they broke up. Then he buried his face back into her shoulder before falling back asleep again.
Y/N stared at the ceiling like she was annoyed, they were still technically broken up. Yet somehow curled against her ex-boyfriend at four in the morning while he slept peacefully beside her.
That morning it was very quiet, which should’ve been Y/N’s first warning sign after waking back up.
So when Y/N woke up around nine-thirty and didn't hear a television blaring or somebody rummaging through her refrigerator, she immediately knew something was wrong.
Still half asleep, she rolled out of bed wearing her oversized Michigan sweatshirt and plaid pajama shorts before slowly making her way toward the kitchen.
The smell of cleaning supplies hit her when she walked in the room, she stood there blinking, infront of her was Colston fully awake, hair damp with clothes that she took from him back on himself cleaning.
Y/N genuinely thought she was hallucinating.
Still half asleep, she stared at him for another moment before speaking.
"Who are you?"
Colston looked over his shoulder.
"What?"
She pointed dramatically, "What have you done with my ex boyfriend?"
He rolled his eyes.
"Good morning to you too."
"No seriously."
She looked around again.
"This is concerning."
He laughed.
"Why?"
"You never cleaned."
"I cleaned."
“You never do."
He couldn't even argue.
Because honestly?
She wasn't wrong.
Every single time he'd come over he'd somehow leave a trail of destruction behind him like a 6’6 tornado.
Yet here he was wiping down her counters.
Y/N narrowed her eyes suspiciously.
"Are you dying?"
"What?"
"You hit your head?"
"No."
"Did somebody replace you?"
"Can you relax?"
She crossed her arms.
"No."
He laughed before holding his head, the hangover was still there and the way he moved slower than normal made everything make even more sense. She walked to the bathroom and he followed her.
Then she noticed the toothbrush sitting on the counter.
Her spare toothbrush.
The emergency one she'd kept under her sink for guests.
"You used my spare toothbrush?"
"I found it."
"You just helped yourself?"
"I brushed my teeth."
"Good."
He looked offended.
"You really weren't kissing me."
"You smelled like death."
"That's rude."
"It was accurate."
Despite herself, Y/N found herself smiling.
For the first time since the breakup things felt weird, but before she could say something Colston finally tossed the paper towel away before leaning against the counter.
"I need a ride."
She blinked.
"A ride?"
"My truck is still at the frat house."
Y/N stared at him, "Your truck?"
"Yeah."
"The same frat house where you got into a fight?"
He looked away.
"Maybe."
She sighed.
Of course his truck was at the frat house. Of course she'd somehow become responsible for getting him there. And somehow, despite them being broken up, she already knew she was going to do it.
Twenty minutes later they were sitting in her car heading toward Dunkin'..Y/N looked exactly like someone who had been forced into this situation. Meanwhile Colston was sitting in the passenger seat wearing the exact same clothes he'd had on the night before.
The drive was quiet until they pulled into the Dunkin' drive-thru.
Y/N immediately reached for her wallet.
Colston stopped her.
"I got it."
"You don't have to."
"I know."
The cashier read off the total.
Before Y/N could argue, Colston gave her his card, and so she tapped his card.
Paid, she looked over at him in shock.
He shrugged, "What?"
"You don't have to buy my coffee everytime."
"You drove me."
"Still."
"You drove me."
That was the end of the apparent conversation, and the drive to the campus felt comfortable even though they weren’t together.
The silence filling the room, which made everything else confusing, the evidence of last night’s party was everywhere. A few college kids were stumbling around near the house, and luckily his truck remained untouched.
For a second nobody moved after she parked, then he unbuckled his seatbelt.
"Thanks."
Thats it? All she gets is a damn thank you, her eyebrows lifted. No love you, no flirting. Colston noticed her face instantly.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"You got an attitude."
"I do not."
Y/N stared straight ahead refusing to look at him.Which told him everything and a grin slowly appeared on his face.
"You're mad."
"I'm not."
"You wanted me to say something."
"No."
"You did."
"No."
He laughed quietly before leaning across the center console, before she could react, he pressed a quick kiss against her cheek. Just long enough to make her freeze to completely ruin whatever argument she was about to make.
Then he pulled back smirking.
Y/N stared at him.
Speechless.
Because somehow that was worse.. Way worse. The dumbass knew exactly what he was doing. He opened the door, stepped out then turned back to look at the car.
For a brief moment neither of them said anything as the morning sun was reflecting off the truck behind him. His hoodie hung loosely from his shoulders and his hair was still messy.
He looked exhausted, but sober.
Finally.
And for the first time since the breakup, he didn't look angry he just looked like Colston. Then he gave her a small nod before turning and walking toward his truck.
Y/N didn't leave immediately. She sat there watching, although despite how annoyed she was with him, despite the breakup, despite everything that had happened, she still wanted to make sure he got in safely.
She watched him unlock the truck.
Watched him climb inside and sit there for a moment.
Then start the engine, only when she saw the truck pull out of the parking lot did she finally let out a breath she didn't realize she'd been holding.
Then she looked at the empty passenger seat beside her before touching the cheek he'd kissed and groaning.
Because somehow, after all that drama, all the fighting, all the stubbornness, all the reasons they broke up, she missed him even more than she had yesterday and was finally having some clarity on how she felt about their future.
