While I mostly used my time in Iceland to work on larger pieces, I also made this little guy to test out a magenta underpainting in acrylic ink on wood panel before doing the final painting in gouache.

This was the first large pencil drawing I did during my residency in Iceland. I had so much fun with this and hope to keep doing larger works in the future! This was made using ten sheets of backer board taped together. The scavenged surface made me feel comfortable being loose and taking risks with the drawing (and made it possible to fly it back home in my suitcase!)
An unexpected outcome of my month long residency in Iceland was making larger drawings in pencil. This was my second drawing (that started initially in ballpoint pen!) made using eight sheets backer board taped together, so I could get it back home easily. It was inspired by my love of how rich and green the moss gets around streams and sources of water.
Exploring color pencil- only using cyan, magenta, and yellow. This was a quick test for a book I'm writing currently. rt

I've been doing daily* paintings for 6 years now! Here's a collection of the paintings I've done of the scene that started it all (sometimes new interpretations of the same photo) over the years.
Having a giant snowstorm on the anniversary this year obviously was a call to go out and take a new photo.
These go back in time, with the last image from March 15th, 2020. There is no painting for 2024, but there is a bonus painting from May of 2021. This year's painting was created with gouache on wood panel with a magenta underpainting.
*I have missed 3 days in the last six years, none this last year!
Just a part of a story I'm working on about a little mouse who get transformed into a sandhill crane. Excited to keep exploring this further :)
"Call to the Last Watch" - my piece for Light Grey Art Lab's The End Is Nigh show! In nautical tradition a ship's bell is rung upon a sailor's death to symbolize that they have finished their final watch. In the case of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, the only item ever recovered from the ship was it's bell. After it's restoration, it was rung 30 times - once for each life lost on the ship, with an additional toll for all those lost on the great lakes.
