We used party hats to represent a birthday party, selecting 10 people to either wear red or blue. While playing the game only people wearing the red hat will be stoped on. These people will be the only ones who get to open the parcel and get a prize. The element of desire will also be present towards the rest of the class and people wearing blue hats who don’t revive a prize. They desire the prize, but it’s something they can’t have.

Experimenting with freezing money 

- you can’t really see the coin but this could work as being seen as an art work rather than actioning money 

- I also think freezing notes would work a lot better and look better on a larger scale but on the other hand might be more easily identifiable as money

Artist Statement

“Human use, population, and technology have reached that certain stage where mother Earth no longer accepts our presence with silence.” - The Dalai Lama

Continuing my research on ecology particularly focusing on the interconnected relations between humans and nature, I become inspired to further develop the idea on the power of nature over mankind. Initially brainstorming question 1  “Art and design often explore relationships between humans and non-humans, the environment and ecology. How can contemporary art and design propose new possibilities for imagining the ‘human’ and the environment?” I explored all aspects of our environment from humans to no human, as well as their impact on each other. This was highlighted throughout my poster where I supplemented man for its creation of man-made objects with nature acting as an uncontrollable force slowly taking over and beginning to power the man-made. This began my exploration of power looking at other artist’s works that incorporate nature as influential elements on man-made objects in their work. Particularly looking at examples of David B. Scott work such as his photorealistic painting “lost and found”, where he highlights the decaying nature of man-made against the living and growing aspect of nature. His work, therefore, helped me develop my idea further in assessment 2.

For my second work, I was inspired by the quote from the Dalai Lama about Mother Nature, highlighting her frustration with mankind and civilization, no longer accepting their destruction. This led me to think about natural disasters acting as Mother Natures messengers to help mankind learn from their mistakes. The uncontrollable force of nature takes over all of civilization, wiping out all mankind aspects in its path. However, the idea of destruction is followed by rejuvenation, allowing for a fresh start. This, therefore, links to my original idea on human and natures interconnected relationship, working together and relying on each other to survive. This led me to continue researching other artist’s work, which explores the power of nature over civilization. Through my research, I come across a section of 21 photographs of parts around the world where the aspect of nature has taken control. Three of the images featured particularly inspired the different environments I wanted to feature in my final work.

My final work incorporates 4 different works that each reveals a different aspect of natural elements and environments on a city including fire, nature, water and desert. I first started my process by deciding the viewpoint I would like to use to show my city, in this case, I decided to have a bird's eye view on a slight angle to highlight the whole city over different pages and also show the scale in which the environment has taken over civilization. I then started to develop my work by sketching out a grid based on the direction of roads, which flowed through each section of the work. The buildings were then drawn using a pen, starting with the general shape and then adding in details. After the buildings where completed, I added in the aspect of nature. For my first section I just added vines which covered and went up the surface of buildings, I then drew water over the city for the next section as if a tsunami had hit, then continuing with sand with covered parts of the city, finally ending with a lighting storm and fire burning down the last section of civilization. I overall wanted to highlight all the different possible situations of natural disasters, without destroying the foundation of the city to show that nature has the power to take over but by doing so the city can also experience renewal. I then used watercolour to highlight the aspect of nature only, using enhanced colour, which is associated with the corresponding element, which stands out against the black and white quality of the buildings.  

Overall though my final work I wanted to show the importance and impact nature can have on mankind, looking at the power of Mother Nature through destruction and rejuvenation. Highlighting natures take over of civilization but also revealing the undelaying interconnected relationship, working together to become the environment we know and live in today.
