Reflection
In conclusion this activity has now come to an end and i will now evaluate my participation and this CAS activity in general.
Personal Role
This activity was my most disappointing CAS activity. I had planned to make this into my main CAS activity and change the whole community i am accustomed to.
I planned to take a green initiative and introduce a recycling programme into the ISU community as well as raise awareness.
I had tried to make myself realise my goals and introduce a more green mindset to the very un-eco ISU community and especially its cafeteria.
I planned to introduce a recycling programme, make a large bottle made out of other bottles, put up posters with eco facts and present presentations to other classes on thinking more eco-friendly to raise awareness and even taking this to the source of the problem to introduce a small change to the consumption of plastic bottles to the ISU cafeteria.
The main concept was to take a green initiative, both words describing my goal, to green to introduce a green mindset and initiative where i actually get off my butt and do work as planned.
Overview of the project
As mentioned previously the plans i had planned differed or went into an order of things. First i would introduce a recycling system, which i setback and another ISU student beat me to, and started a environmental club. An after school activity where THEY take the green initiative.
I could not conduct with my giant bottle plan as all the plastic bottle management went into their planning and organisation. They had also put up posters which i had planned to do to increase awareness.
The only thing i had left was present presentations to other classes to increase their awareness, which i did not come to due to a busy school schedule.
Seeing all my failures, i still wanted to continue this project and joined the environmental club. We were not enemies and we shared a common goal thus leading to my joining. This however gave me less series jobs as putting up the posters, doing the handiwork or labour for the bottles etc. I still managed to take a small degree of green initiative.
Conclusions
I was extremely disappointed with myself. I could not do any of the things i had planned to as i had failed to actually plan the plans. This led to others doing work that needed to be done and me just joining them.
This however made me realise how hard it is to plan and actually stick to them. It is a good idea to set your sights on great goals but now i realise that they should be possible before impossible. I should start by working on small goals and then make sure i can achieve the small ones before the big ones. Once i did that i should have gone and done the big plans.
This made me realise how i needed to improve my perseverance and planning skills if i want to take on big projects in the future. I need to start small and work my way up big.
Learning outcome conditions
Increase our awareness of our own strengths and areas for growth
Undertake new challenges
Planned and Initiated activities
Worked and collaborated with others
Showed perseverance
Engaged with issue of global importance
Considered ethical implications
Developed new skills
The main learning outcome i have gained from thie CAS attempt is increasing my awareness of my own strengths and ares of growth. I realised that i still needed to grow as a person and develop my skills further if i want to achieve unrealistic goals. I should also set realistic goals and achieve them first. I tried to engage an issue of global importance and considered ethical implications in this CAS activity while in the environmental club.
Farewell Video
Reflection
In conclusion this activity has now come to an end and i will now evaluate my participation and this CAS activity in general. This is a ongoing activity.
Personal Role
This activity i took the initiative. As the end of the year is nearing, and our class is closer to exams and graduating. I thought that at the end of the year assembly we could make a video, like many of the previous years.
I had volunteered to organise and plan the entire thing, which others can join and help me with. The video would be organised and planned by me about my class. The personal responsibility that i chose to bear also is great as this also affects my class and the yearly tradition of the farewell assembly at ISU.
I planned to make a video, which under discussions with my classmate, had agreed to be like a interview themed, video, where our class was interviewed.
Other people that volunteered to help had suggested to take charge in another portion of the class video, where we all run with a flag. I have accepted this offer and had expected them to be responsible and organise this video, which i was let down much to my disappointment.
Another role taken in this activity is the class in general, as they are the ones being interviewed. I had hoped that they would have a positive attitude on this project and would try their best to make this video fun and interesting which again much to my disappointment i was let down by the negative attitude of this project.
Overview of the project
This activity is an ongoing project. As the class of 2014 at ISU is nearing the graduation and exams, ISU holds a annual assembly or the farewell assembly. Where the graduating class shows to the school some sort of thing. It had varied to videos to musical performances to plays and skits.
I had always loved watching those end of the year assembly and had always thought of what our classes was going to be like. I had for three years thought of ideas and always wanted to make a great video about our class.
Our classmates are getting interviewed by me, one by one where i ask them questions to better understand and get to know them, and so will the rest of ISU. Each interview is around 15-20 min, while some is shorter and others is longer.
The year finally came as i took the responsibilities and took charge. We decided to do a interview based video, where at the end we all run in a rally race fashion, using a flag as a baton. Ann had volunteered to organise or be in charge of this part, which i agreed to.
I am using a program called Final Cut Pro X, a mac based video editing software, which i will also learn how to use.
Conclusions
In conclusion, so far, i have interviewed the majority of the class, with the exception of me and two others. However they can be interviewed pretty quickly.
I was somewhat disappointed about how little care my classmates gave this project. I treated it very seriously from the start while others treated the interviews as a bother and some refused to cooperate, in the final running scene and some of the interviews.
I have begun to have doubts about this project as many don’t care, but i will still persist as i still care. I wanted this video to be something the others look back into in the future and think, “huh, so that was my high school life” or realize how much effort and thought i put into this video.
I also want this to be fun and i have found it fun for me as i got to learn a lot more about the other students in my class a lot better, as our class in not that close. But the end product is what matters, the deadline is on friday the April 25th 2014. That is the farewell assembly which i hope turns out well
Learning outcome conditions
Increase our awareness of our own strengths and areas for growth
Undertake new challenges
Planned and Initiated activities
Worked and collaborated with others
Showed perseverance
Engaged with issue of global importance
Considered ethical implications
Developed new skills
This activity limited me to the community of ISU. I undertook new challenges and planned and initiated activities. Which in my opinion was the hardest part of this CAS activity. Another learning outcome i had to overcome was the work and collaborate with others, specifically those of my class, some of which whom was gave very negative attitudes towards this project. I am still showing perseverance as i believe i can make this into a good farewell assembly, and i am developing new skills by learning how to use a video editing software.
ACE Tournament
Reflection
In conclusion this activity has now come to an end and i will now evaluate my participation and this CAS activity in general.
Personal Role
This activity consisted of me participating in the ACE tournament. For two years now, i have participated in the badminton and table tennis sections of the tournament. However the second year, i have participated in the third part, chess.
First year, in 2013, i participated in table tennis, and badminton. For table tennis i failed to get to semi finals, as i had lost to a student form the elite school of UB. He however turned out to be the champion of the table tennis portion of the tournament, i will say that i was not better than him because of his amazing spins while in-game.
Badminton went better for me but not a complete victory. I had teamed up with a classmate of mine, called Misheel. He was a good badminton player and seeing as he was the only other good player than me, and as i viewed myself a good player i had asked him to join up which he agreed to. We lost the finals to another ISU team composed of Tsogt a grade 10 student and James a grade 12 student.
This year, i joined the same portions plus chess. My table tennis was good however ultimately like last year, lost and did not make to semi finals, while however making it to semi-semi finals.
Badminton this year i teamed up with Bandi, another fellow peer from my class. I would not consider him to be a excellent badminton player, however he proved me otherwise during the matches.
The final portion, which was chess i participated only to win my first chess match. This gave me disastrous confidence in my skills that led to my downfall in four losses in a row to other students from other schools.
Overview of the project
Every year, there is a tournament called the ACE tournament in ISU, consisting of three different parts. A chess tournament, Table Tennis and Badminton. The first year i had joined table tennis and badminton as those were activities i was sure i was adequate at, and the following year i added chess to my schedule.
For table tennis, i had been playing since fourth grade. Not as a serious activity, but for leisure, which gave me above average skills as a table tennis player. However this was shown a reality to me as i played against other serious and good players and they had defeated me. This happened two years in a row and the only improvement i happened to show was that i made it to the semi-semi finals in the second year as i did not reach that far in the first year.
Badminton however was a sport i always enjoyed and was somewhat good at. I joined the first year with another good player called Misheel a classmate and came in second place, losing by a very close match. The second year i had teamed up with Bandi, a classmate and peer of mine whom i knew did not have much experience in the sport. However, both years i came second, losing to the same team consisting of one student in grade 10 and later, grade 11.
This year had gained an addition of sports, chess. I never played chess but i was familiar with the rules. Thinking this would be a good way to see if this sport would interest me. I participated only to win my first match. I would say i gained interest, only to be shown that there are those who take it seriously and i lost the next three matches. The last match however went so long, that my opponent and i just decided the victor with a game of rock paper scissors, which i lost even though it was the closes match i had ever experienced.
Conclusions
For table tennis, i had confidence in my skills, i believed if i focused i could beat anyone, no matter who. However the kids i never played against, who were actually good showed me the reality of the sport, only to show me that no matter how hard i try, i can still lose. The spins were amazing, it was a complete new thing i saw, that no matter what i did, could not hit back. Going even as far as to lose 11 to 1. However i believed i improved a little, as i faced the same kids and only lost 11 to 6 the second year.
Badminton was a sport i was always good at, the first year, i believe i played incredibly bad, making mistakes i usually would not, which i believe led to my ultimate downfall, or second place. The second year i kind of went back to my previous skills as a badminton player, and started to beat other teams alone. However i was with someone who had less experience, and did not rely on him at all, while at the first year i did. However, i was incredibly impressed, by my buddy Bandi, as he had gotten shots i did not even believe i could have gotten, which boosted my hope while sometimes i thought i was going to lose. I learned to trust others a little.
Chess was a new sport i decided to see if it was interesting, and it was. I won my first match which surprised me the most, but reality hit me as i lost all the other matches. I fought against the champion and a runner up, at which point i lost all of my confidence and it was further crushed when i lost to a 6th grader. However at the last match, i decided i should not give up, which resulted in a tie, an incredible game, which i lost after rock paper scissors. I believe that i played amazingly as i don’t play chess.
Learning outcome conditions
Increase our awareness of our own strengths and areas for growth
Undertake new challenges
Planned and Initiated activities
Worked and collaborated with others
Showed perseverance
Engaged with issue of global importance
Considered ethical implications
Developed new skills
For this activity, i believe that i achieved more learning outcome conditions than i should have, saying that this was in my opinion a very good CAS activity.
This was just a participation in a tournament. I believed i only came to develop new skills, showed perseverance, undertook new challenges and workers and collaborated with others. I defiantly developed my skills in all three sports, as i experienced defeat which i can work on to improve myself. I showed perseverance in all of my tournaments, even though i was going to lose, i still fought. Undertaking new challenges was probably the hardest learning outcome i had to undertake, as chess was incredibly crushing of the soul. A learning outcome i surpassingly feel like i accomplished is that i worked well with others. I first taught that my teammate, would only drag me down, only to be shown up and trust on him to get the hard shots.
EOCA
Reflection
In conclusion this activity has now come to an end and i will now evaluate my participation and this CAS activity in general.
Personal Role
This CAS activity was a activity to perform in the evening of creative arts performance. As i had experienced last year the thrill of performing on stage, i had asked a fellow friend and a instrument player, Bandi to partake in this activity with me.
For this activity i played one of the two main roles in terms of guitar playing. Bandi and i had split the activity and the main roles of the guitars into two parts, both of us sharing everything equally, from the main riff to the rhythm chords to the solo.
Because of that the pressure of half the guitar parts in the song was up to me. I did possess previous experience in playing the guitar, as i had been playing for 3-4 years beforehand, but this was the first time that i was playing on stage in front of a audience.
I however play the guitar in a highly controversial way, without a pick and that limited my ability to play certain parts of the song. I believe that there is where Bandi came useful and took the parts i played badly. While i played parts that i could play well, making up for each others weaknesses and fully utilising our strengths.
The guitars were very important as they were the guiding rhythm and beat for the singer, in our case Altan. However during the final performance i may have messed up, but it still sounded good.
Overview of the project
This activity is a performance, by me Bandi and Altan. We are performing a song in the Evening of creative arts, a annual school event at ISU. The song is called Hotel California by the Eagles. We are playing the metal version, as the solo sounds better than other versions and we are mixing it up. We took the intro to Hotel California from the Hell freezes over version that the Eagles performed. This intro was long and impressive and the metal version came after that intro.
Initially, Bandi and i had argued about the choice of the song. After extensive considering and arguing and questionnaires served around some classes, we had finally decided to play hotel california.
This activity was actually i think in my opinion, one of the harder ones. It required a lot of commitment, as we were no good with only a little bit of practice. We almost practiced 15 - 20 times together as a group but individually i practiced almost 4 times a week.
I wanted it to be good however in the end the pressure got to me and i had performed poorly. There was also another main problem with members, as initially we thought we would make a real band with a live bassist and drummer. However all of those parts ended up turning into a backing track while only me and bandi played live.
Conclusions
One day before the actual event. Bandi and I thought it would be a good idea to have a final group practice. We called Altan and had practiced for an hour after school in the music room. However as we had finished up and was putting away our instruments, i had asked bandi to bring my guitar out with him if he could. He agreed and as he was doing so, HE DROPPED MY GIBSON! (A gibson is a brand that is very expensive and famous) This blunder had broken of a tuning peg of the head thus making one string completely useless.
However i was lucky as there was another group that was performing after us and i asked if i could use their electric guitar which they agreed to. I played my part on a completely different guitar on my first live experience. Thus i believe that affected my ability in playing the song, thus resulting in a somewhat questionable performance.
Another thing to note is that before performing, me and bandi had spent like 5 minutes rearranging the wires, a long time for people waiting. Which Ms.Sarah, our supervisor showed her disappointment in by telling us that was one of our blunders.
Learning outcome conditions
Increase our awareness of our own strengths and areas for growth
Undertake new challenges
Planned and Initiated activities
Worked and collaborated with others
Showed perseverance
Engaged with issue of global importance
Considered ethical implications
Developed new skills
For this activity, i believe that i achieved more learning outcome conditions than i should have, saying that this was in my opinion a very good CAS activity.
I achieved all of the learning outcomes with the exception of two, which i believe is obvious. I did not engage this activity with issues of global importance and i did not consider ethical implications. Just performing a song does not engage one with global importance, well our performance for at least did not.
We also did not take into consideration the possibility of how this song could have affected the audience. It may have offended some as this song talks about addictions, California and hotels. For people that despise hotels and California exist.
Otherwise i had increased my awareness of my own areas of growth, undertook the new challenge of performing on stage, planned and initiated practices, worked with my band, showed perseverance though constant practice and developed my guitar skills.
Flourishing Futures
Reflection
In conclusion this activity has now come to an end and i will now evaluate my participation and this CAS activity in general.
Personal Role
In this activity, i was the one with the least amount of experience in writing code. I had only started to learn out of interest as the peers around me, Aadi and Bandi were really interested and knowledgable in this area. In order to feel less left out, i had began to learn code, only to be recommended by my enthusiastic friends to do this CAS activity.
The gap in knowledge of code writing between me and my friends were at first clearly visible and could be even argued that i was dragging them down. This not only made me feel bad about joining this activity, it also fuelled my desire to improve myself in writing this new language.
Later in the activity, i had noticed that my skills had actually improved. From the start where i made a amazingly horrid looking website to making a very complex photo viewer, i was very surprised not only by my own skills improvement, but also by the improvement in skills or their already existing skills in my peers.
The most help i could provide for my group was make a photo viewer, choosing a background for the website, the logo redesign and small notes in how to improve the website. Aadi and Bandi did a lot of the code writing for the main website functions. However i still believe that i did well in participating in this project.
Overview of the project
This project was defiantly a activity that opened up a whole new world to me. I believe i underestimated the knowledge and skills required to write code. For things varying from games to websites, the sheer knowledge and time that is needed to make all the features work on websites like youtube or google.
Our website in comparisons was smaller in features than thought. I was very satisfied with our final product. The most help i could provide for my group was a picture viewer, background and notes on everything else. So seeing Bandi and Aadi create something i could not understand amazed me to a great extent.
The website had a basic green navigation bar next to the flourishing futures logo. The background was a picture of the Mongolian mountains and sky with a horse and a ger. I thought this background picture would be a good way give the feeling of an authentic Mongolian NGO.
Other main features included the login for admins and members to a calendar planner by google docs where they can login, chat and create schedules. Whilst also including a small facebook like button at the bottom right that linked it with the flourishing futures facebook page.
Conclusions
However the project was ultimately scrapped by Flourishing futures with an email. This came as a large disappointment to us but was understandable. I realize that our website in comparison to other websites was very amateur. The difference could clearly be seen and choosing a actual firm that does this as a living is much more convenient.
Personally i think flourishing futures had changed their minds or started to doubt themselves at the the meeting. I suspect that they expected a much more better website to be presented to them during that meeting. However at that time, our website was very basic and even though we had asked for suggestions on improvement, they might have thought twice.
I can also understand their rejection on terms of skill and experience we had. We were very limited in knowledge in this project but that was what made us want to learn more and perform better, more specifically me.
I had sometimes felt that if my knowledge of html was greater, i could have helped my teammates to a greater extent and that could have made flourishing futures think twice about rejecting us.
However i did learn to a greater extent of something i had no experience in to making small codes. I think i improved greatly. In the case of doing this activity again, i would try and put more effort into learning more about this new world of knowledge
Learning outcome conditions
Increase our awareness of our own strengths and areas for growth
Undertake new challenges
Planned and Initiated activities
Worked and collaborated with others
Showed perseverance
Engaged with issue of global importance
Considered ethical implications
Developed new skills
I believe i had accomplished a majority of the learning outcomes mentioned in my proposal. The areas in which i believe i did not meet fully is worked and collaborated with others learning condition fully met. I had limited knowledge in this activity, thus could not help or talk with my teammates that well.
Another learning outcome i believe i did not fully accomplish is perseverance. I believe that i could have done better or learnt more if i had put in more perseverance into this activity. Perhaps if i had given even more commitment and learned more, it might have made the website better and this might have kept us in touch with flourishing futures.
