Zimbabwean Designer, David Alford Harare set to showcase at New York Fashion Week!
David Alford continues to push Zimbabwean fashion boundaries with his exciting and commendable news that he is hitting the fashion runway of theee fashion week of all fashion weeks, New York Fashion Week 2017. Not a stranger to my blog, we have covered the impressive progress and work of the bold David Alford (interview with David is available here). The announcement is certainly welcome especially as a contemporary Zimbabwean designer raising the Zim Fashion Flag high globally. He now makes history by being the first locally based Zim designer to be invited to the prestigious NYFW taking place from 9 to 17 February!
David Alford Harare "Centurion Collection" at Accra Fashion Week
David’s New York Fashion Week 2017 debut is set to take place on 11 February. This exciting news follows an incredible year which saw the multiple award winning David Alford penetrating the international market showcasing in Ghana, France and Kenya in 2016. David’s Spring/ Summer 2016 collection Centurion debuted at Accra Fashion Week before making its way to the prestigious UNESCO Africa Fashion Reception in Paris and lastly Nairobi Fashion Week. Known for his bold and contemporary collections with attention to detail and a meticulous finish. David has found his style and the world is loving it. The brand ended 2016 on an unmatched high being awarded Best Designer Couture at the Style Oracle Fashion Awards and Designer of the year at the Zimbabwe Models Awards 2016 respectively.
Creative Director, David Alford says “2016 was a tremendous year for the brand to further its reach outside of Zimbabwe, and for our overall team to refine developing collections. 2017 looks set to take the Brand to new heights and give us the opportunity to immerse ourselves in more prestigious Fashion Shows with the hope of our garments being stocked by International stores etc.”
David Alford Harare’s Fallen Angel Collection captured by Dean Zulich
David will be making Zim fashion history on Saturday 11 February 2017 as he debuts his Autumn/ Winter collection “On the Precipice” inspired and influenced by one of the 7 natural wonders of the world – The Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier Reef is diminishing to a point of up to 67% in certain areas with it suspected to take up to 15 years to recover if at all and has taken somewhere in the region of 25 million years to develop to its present-day state. Many contributing facts have caused the demise of the reef, both man- made and natural causes and it was this idea of two polar opposites which made Creative Director David Alford begin to look into how he could bring a collection together that resembles the process of something living and dying.
A moment with David Alford 2017
I am extremely proud of David’s passion and creativity as he continues to push the fashion boundaries. Showcasing that Zimbabwe too can add a bold , contemporary and edgy voice to global fashion. We are patiently waiting for February 11th!

Returning Home to Maropeng – “ The Cradle of Humankind”
A moment at The Maropeng Visitor Centre
As 2016 comes to an end, my recent trip to South Africa led me to one of the eight World Heritage sites in South Africa, the majestic Maropeng. Maropeng is popularly known as The Cradle of Humankind and is home to the oldest and ongoing palaeontological dig in the world. Located in the Gauteng province, an hour outside the bustling Johannesburg. My weekend getaway to Maropeng or more my homecoming proved to be a memorable and unique experience of both science and historic discoveries surrounded by the breath-taking views of the Witwaterberg and Magaliesberg ranges.
The beautiful drive is quick and filled with a stunning outback landscape which is a wonderful escape from the concrete buzz of Jozi. Welcomed by the Maropeng Pillars and friendly security, we checked into the luxurious and intimate Maropeng Hotel. As you enter the hotel, you are immediately drawn to the infinity pool overlooking the lush mountain ranges. This phenomenal view is an iconic feature of the elegant boutique hotel.
The stunning infinity pool at the Maropeng Hotel
After settling down in my exclusive room with more stunning views. It was time to explore and discover all that is The Cradle of Humankind and the only World Heritage site in Gauteng. The site is widely viewed as the place from which all of humankind originated. The Maropeng Visitor Centre is certainly a haven for the tourist who appreciates complex journeys into archaeological and historic research.
The magical Maropeng Exhibition Centre is simply fascinating regardless of your beliefs on human origins and migration. The Exhibition is housed in the Tumulus Building which has some rare and brilliant architectural features. From the amazing walls, a grass amphitheatre to futuristic spaces.
Taking in the displays at the Visitor Centre
The impressive work, displays and research done at the site makes you curious about our origins and encourages discussion around our evolution and future as humans. There is something quite spiritual about the tour. More particularly, for some guests the journey in the Exhibition can bring feelings of a homecoming or at least make you question our sense of belonging and where home really is?
Fossil discoveries on display at Maropeng
The tour of the Maropeng Exhibition Centre also consists of fossil discoveries and multimedia displays of the history of the earth and humankind. By far the most memorable feature of the tour personally was the underground boat ride at the Visitor Centre. What an adventure for visitors! The exciting boat ride explores the creation and development of the earth. The voyage consists of several stages of the creation of the earth from the ice age (very cool snow making machines) to fiery balls of molten rock (with some even more impressive steam machines). The whole ride is simply majestic and fascinating. The development and impressive features of the Visitor Centre at Maropeng is astounding.
Underground boat ride
After taking in the impressive exhibition display and beautiful outdoor views , it was time for another adventure. The famous Sterkfontein caves located 10 km from the Maropeng Visitor Centre proved to be both an informative and physical tour. With our orange helmets on and our knowledgeable guide, Courage we set out to explore the Sterkfontein Caves. The caves are home to the oldest and ongoing palaeontological dig in the world. The Sterkfontein Caves are also known for the discovery of the pre-human skull, known as “Mrs Ples” and the hominid skeleton “Little Foot”. The tour of the cave includes some kneeling and crawling so this is definitely an activity for the more outdoors inclined tourist. Courage’s storytelling and humour added to the tour and made me less concerned about the 186 uphill steps we had to climb to exit the caves!
Sterkfontein Caves
After a jam, packed afternoon of tours and exploring of the Maropeng Exhibition Centre and Sterkfontein Caves. It was time to unwind in the iconic infinity pool at the Maropeng Hotel (not that it had been on my mind all afternoon). The sunset view overlooking the charming Witwaterberg and Magaliesberg range was the sweetest end to the weekend away in the isolated Maropeng.
The hidden Maropeng, is a traveller’s haven for the tourist keen to explore the earth and human creation. The discoveries and exhibition journeys certainly get you questioning creation and life. The experience is unique regardless of your beliefs and the Maropeng Hotel is the perfect way to unwind from the city surrounded by beautiful mountain ranges and memorable sunsets. Definitely a homecoming to be experienced!
“Ridgeway House” Harare’s Cosy Getaway!
If there is one thing that I enjoy thoroughly is discovering beautiful spaces which offer a memorable experience, more so if they are hidden gems. Harare being my home and Zimbabwe’s capital is a city often filled with some true treasures (if you look hard enough lol). A rainy November weekend and my curiosity led me to the charming Ridgeway Guest House nestled in the northern suburbs of Sunshine City.
The beautiful and lush garden
Ridgeway House Guest Lodge is located a few kilometres out of the Harare CBD, the welcoming house is the perfect location for the traveller looking for something more intimate and peaceful but still close to the city. The lush garden and tall Msasa trees add to the relaxing and tranquil setting.
Warm entrance
Welcomed by the friendly Patrick, I was shown to my cosy room and around the house. What becomes evident immediately! Is that Ridgeway is more than a house, it is a home. The beautifully designed home is a contemporary African enthusiast’s haven.
Contemporary African spaces
The tastefully furnished home has some unique African pieces from woven Zimbabwean baskets to elegant and modern African fabrics. Every detail is carefully executed and as you take your shoes off you are immersed into a magical and modern African bungalow . The impressive interior design is the product of owners, Sam Dunlop and Debbie Coles.
The stunning space also has Wi-Fi which is a must for the business traveller or in my case the social media enthusiast. The garden pool is another great way to relax in the leafy suburb unfortunately for me the weather did not allow me to cool off in their sparkly water.
The highlight for me is the veranda /patio area which is ideal to unwind and also entertain. A perfect way to relax….a tasty drink to sip, your feet up surrounded by contemporary African décor and the peaceful air.
Patrick, who is also the home’s Chef is attentive and more than helpful. Ensuring that your every need is attended to and that you feel at home. His breakfast lives up to the praises in the guest book, serving up a healthy breakfast as requested of a delicious omelette and fresh fruit. The flexibility to request meals as you wish at a preferred time is certainly an advantage of the guest house. The cosy Ridgeway House is ideal for the traveller wanting to be comfortable, flexible and most of all at home.
The home is a must for both local and international travelers whether on business in the capital or holidaying. Also private functions ranging from baby showers, wedding preparations, a special birthday or for the visitor wanting to relax
The contemporary African interior designs, friendly service and peaceful surroundings all add to its charm. For a homey but relaxing experience in Harare, this is a must. The only regret, was that I never got to put my costume on for a Sunshine City afternoon swim. Next time …

A Luxurious Summer at Meikles!
I have been told, “That you do not need magic to disappear, just a destination!” Meikles is one such destination that continues to push the luxurious and stylish boundaries in Harare. My love affair with Meikles is not something new to those that follow my blog. Earlier this year, I shared my top 5 must dos at Harare’s most iconic hotel (available here). One of the most captivating attributes of the hotel is that each visit offers something new, and memorable. With summer having returned to Zimbabwe’s Capital, I spoilt myself to a summer getaway at the stylish Meikles Club at the 100 year old hotel.
Breath-taking views of the city
Official Meikles Hotel video
Meikles Hotel features over 300 rooms in its two majestic wings that being the North and South Wing of the prestigious hotel. The North wing of the hotel recently underwent a 2 year refurbishment that cost a total of $9 million. The newly refurbished North Wing opened in 2013 and had been on my must visit list for some time. The exclusive Meikles Club is located in the North Wing of the hotel and includes , a private lounge , kitchen and chef as well as a state of the art boardroom …oh and a butler service. What more could you need whether on business or to relax maybe even both. October was the ideal time for some R & R as purple takes over the city with the fully blossomed Jacarandas famously known for this time of year. What a charming and appropriate location for my summer getaway in the city!
With my weekend bags packed (as lightly as possibly only 2 bags …reasonable for a fashionista) and sunnies ready. I arrived at the Meikles, and right from the moment I drove into their parking. The attention and service commences, with concierge arriving to assist me. After a quick check in and walk to my room by the friendly, Simba who has been with the hotel for over 22 years. You immediately realise that there is some special about this hotel, from the staff to its history. Meikles’s pedigree and wealth adds to its 5 star status, the only in the city might I add.
Meikles hotel lobby
The corridors of the North Wing are fresh and detailed beautifully with décor done by Cape Town-based interior design company Weixelbaumer Design. Modern, African and lush! Something you cannot miss is the attention to the detail throughout the hotel’s from lamps, chandeliers to artwork and even the fabric on the curtains. Everything is well detailed and as they say, “Greatness is in the details”.
Stunning decor
After settling in my beautiful room (facing the park of course) overlooking the majestic October Jacarandas. Simba showed me around the exclusive and stylish Meikles Club particularly the Club lounge which is peaceful and ideal to unwind or have an intimate meeting. The exclusive lounge also boasts a private boardroom which is convenient for for business trips. All this overlooking the breath-taking Harare skyline. Additionally, Meikles Club guests at the end of the day receive a snack platter of treats delivered to you which includes an array or treats such as, samosas, vegetarian and meat platters. Meikles Club guests are also treated to a complimentary drink everyday between 530-630 !
A moment in the Meikles Club
Breakfast at the Meikles Club is undeniably the best way to start your morning. The Meikles Club’s breakfast spread is beyond mouth-watering and the options will certainly leave you wanting to try a little bit of everything. From succulent fruit, tasty muesli to freshly baked pastries the choices are endless. Oh and that does not include the breakfast mains specially prepared for Meikles Club guests in the private kitchen. A range of options from fish dishes to full English breakfast options. Being a self-confessed Salmon appreciator, I opted for the salmon and egg benedict dish. One word, divine!
A beautiful spread at the Meikles Club lounge
Peaceful and stylish surroundings
After some breakfast indulgence and one very large cappuccino, a view of the city is a wonderful way to recover before tackling the day’s activities. On this trip, I was keen to view emphasis on view, their gym for guests and it proved to be a fitness bunny’s haven or at least I think so. Located on the second floor overlooking the park, the gym has a variety of fitness equipment whether you are hoping to do cardio or strengthening. I should hope that by my next trip, I will be utilising the gym more for my abs of steel and arm strengthening …yassss
Gym located on the second floor for guests over looking the park
While I did not spend much time in the gym, the pool deck however is my favourite spot when holidaying at the Meikles. Sun basking on the open roof pool deck with a conveniently situated bar sipping on summer cocktails, sounds pretty heavenly to me. To add to this, stunning views of Harare’s CBD.
Pool deck
The pool deck is also home to the hotel’s spa which includes massage rooms and a sauna. When you are a Meikles Club guest one of their complimentary services is a back and neck massage. Pampering at the Spa helped with some much needed tension releasing and relaxing. The spa area is also set to go under some refurbishing in the near future, something I am beyond eager for because if anyone loves spas, it is me!
Ready for some R & R
For your meals, the Pavilion Bistro, The Explorer’s Bar and La Fontaine offer a good balance ranging from fine dining to casual meals. During my stay, I also had a moment to wedding crash an intimate sunset wedding taking place on the hotel’s garden located on the Pavilion. The hotel is not just perfect for a business or holiday getaways but also for functions.
Wedding decor!
Explorer’s bar
After the sun sets, the Can Can bar is the perfect spot at the Meikles to unwind and sip on a fine beverage and if you want more exclusivity, Meikles Club guests have their private space in the Meikles Club Lounge. With balcony views overlooking Zimbabwe's largest city, the hotel’s location is certainly what draws me to this gem.
Taking in the Meikles Gardens
My summer weekend city getaway was certainly every bit of luxurious filled with tranquillity and pampering. From my relaxing pool deck massage, exclusive service and treats in the Meikles Club to fine dining, Meikles offers a memorable five star experience in the heart of Harare unlike any other hotel in Harare. A true escape in the bustling city, a luxurious destination for the traveller looking for extra service and stylish facilities. The Meikles Club in particular is simply a must for a VIP stay!

Luxury in the Heart of Harare

MAC Cosmetics Summer Essentials!
Purple is taking over the streets as Jacarandas bloom and the temperatures get higher. Summer is officially here and MAC ’s Sam Levy’s Store in Harare has some key summer essentials to keep you trendy and sexy for the new season.
Here is a run down of my favourite items for summer available at the Mac Sam Levy’s Village store:
MAC Prolonged Powder
With the intense heat that is known in this part of the world during summer and where we are constantly looking for zero shine . You definitely need to stay fresh all day long and that is exactly what the MAC prolonged powder does. Especially for fellow beauty lovers like myself who have oily skin. This powder is sweat and humidity resistant ideal for those hot and sweaty days.
MAC Vibe Tribe
Well the collections name was received with mixed a mixed reception. The new range is fun and colourful. From its aztec inspired packaging to the exclusive lip sticks and highlighters. It screams summer and I am especially loving the Pure Vanity lipstick in this range. Vibe Tribe consists of beautiful corals , red and gold which are a perfect combination of nudes and glistering tangerines. Minus the name controversy , I'm definitely vibing to this collection this season.
Ariana Grande VIVA GLAM 2
Ariana returns with her second collection for MAC and makes use of lighter tones this time with pinks/purples including a lipstick and lip glass . This time the VIVA Glam 2 lipstick is bold and bright while the lip glass is more subtle and muted. Something for every occasion for your summer calendar,
MAC Oil Control Lotion
Sweaty days return this season and so does oily skin. In summer , oily skin is one of my biggest issues and I am always looking at how to reduce my shine. Making use of natural minerals, oil free and light weight hydration this is the perfect moisturiser for those with oily skin. It is a product that I have mentioned before and I am a huge fan off. The MAC skin care range is one of the most exciting areas and ideal for both men and women.
MAC eye shadow
To go with the playful season , eye shadow is a fun way to explore colours and really make your eyes pop in summer. I’m currently enjoying the She’s a Model eye shadow which is an edited palette featuring a colour wave of cool, neutral hues with a hint of deep teal . Whether it is a neutral look or a vibrant look the eye shadow selection if diverse.
MAC Matte lipstick
Who doesn't love a good MAC matte lipstick? The most iconic and popular product at MAC is certainly a classic MAC lippie. Whether nude , bright, coral or dark. MAC has hundreds of hues to select from for all races and skin tones! I definitely am loving Strip Me Down and an all time favourite Ruby Woo. This season I am also playing around with more corals and nudes! Definitely pop in for a professional makeup artists to help pick your match.
Say hello to summer in style with some beauty must haves for the new season from MAC Cosmetic’s Harare store at Sam Levy’s Village.

The September Fashion Issue Highlights
Inaugural September Fashion Issue Show Creates a Buzz in local Industry!
Collective of Designers that collectively organised TSFI
September known as the January of Fashion , is the welcoming of a new fashion season of Spring /Summer. Here in Zimbabwe , as the temperatures get warmer our wardrobes get more vibrant too. With Zimbabwe Fashion Week postponed this year , local designers came up with an innovative showcase . A group of Zimbabwe’s finest designers for over 2 months worked collectively to conceptualise The September Fashion Issue. Through perseverance and innovation , the inaugural September Fashion Issue took place on 3 September at a rather unconventional venue of the Athenitis Parking lot.
Uncoventional location: Athenitis Parking lot
As all shows tend to do , the event started a little late but was worth the wait. The rustic location and venue of the parking lot gave it an authentic city feel. One ticket on the night gave you access to all 12 designers. The runway was bold , vibrant , fierce and exciting with impressive stage production and walks. With that being said, below are some of my memorable highlights from the night.
Women of Power by Sanah Designs
Sanah’s bold womenswear collection
From The City of Kings, Sanha opened the night with a striking showcase. I loved this collection not just because it was a bold for the unapologetic women. The quality of the garments were top of the range and the collection had cohesion. From funky shoulder pads to lace designs and striking collars. I loved it!
Saru Murungu and that print
Saru Murungu takes to the runway
The fresh African prints, zips and elements of nature especially trees made this collection a stand out. The use of blues and yellows were a lovely combination . The tailoring was perfect , the unique cut outs and styles added to the showcase. Certainly one of my favourite collections of the night.
Z’arguesia- Ruffles , collars and draping
Ishmael’s impressive collection for TSFI
Reds , champagne and nudes. Some of my favourite colours were part of this collection. True to his signature tailoring , Ishmael's collection made use of his stunning draping, ruffles and collars. From flowing cocktail dress to power looks. Z’arguesia’s women wear is a must. I love his style and his looks which are perfect for all body types something that is not common on the runway . Whether slim or curvy , Ishmael understands the women’s figure.
Haus of Lau - Casual Chic
House of Lau stuns with casual chic
Vibrant and earthy with oranges and browns as well as plaid designs with hints of blue. This collection was also well received by the audience . The tailoring and cuts make this collection a must for casual chic outings especially those blazers . Certainly a must for the trendy man! I also loved that the look was closed by the beautiful Chiedza Mukucha who rocked the only female look by House of Lau.
Swimwear and Resort with Noe Es
Perfect for your a holiday getaway , Noe Es is a must!
Who doesn't love swim wear and resort? Known for her trademark swimsuits and resort looks , Nompumelelo brings summer and style. From high waisted bikinis to sexy straps , a little something for everyone. The stand out collection was the white themed resort collection ideal for the trendy holiday goer.
TIR Fashion House brings Lagos and prints
High-low chic by TIR Fashion House
True to her character, Lagos-Harare based Danielle always brings colours , prints and fierceness to the runway. Her collection was playful but still sexy. Her high-low tops were certainly bold and perfect for summer.
Pink Persuasion by Tapfumanei Munenge!
Hilda Mabu wows in Tapfumanei Munenge
My go-to and dearest friend , Tapfumanei opened with some menswear looks something he has not done much of on the runway. The refreshing menswear looks made use of a not too bold pink which is ideal for the stylish gentleman. True to his bold ad risqué style , the female models followed with sexy pink lace looks . From umbrella skits to crop tops and pencil skirts , the bold and pink looks were striking. His final look fit perfectly on the stunning Hilda Mabu who closed the runway.
Final Thoughts
The Zimbabwean fashion industry is quite an exciting place to be. The overall production was brilliant and the models brought fierce. Progress has been made and the quality of garments have improved ,most of all local appreciation and attendance is growing. One or 2 collections were misses for me and I did notice a dress or two in a certain yellow and pink collection being held by pins , that is a fashion no no!!! Unfinished looks should never make the runway or at least should not be obvious to audiences
My look for the night
The night was certainly a fashion lovers haven and undoubtedly one of the most well attended events of the year with lots of media too. For next year , we definitely need a 2 day programme because the night was quite long to sit through as fabulous as it was . For its inaugural showcase , it was certainly a job well done by a hardworking collection of local designers. Bravo!

His use of blue and white with some hints of orange added a graceful, powerful and calm feel to his clothes for the confident and classy man and woman. I certainly was wowed and loved the showcase. He slayed!
Bryan K Performs his hit Heavy Machine
All in all it was a fabulous night and with performances by Bryan K and the National Ballet of Zimbabwe. This was certainly a high end fashion show and the collections showcased the potential of our local industry. Edgars investment in the local industry was certainly conveyed celebrating 75 years of being in Zimbabwe. Discovering local talent and bringing international talent to Zimbabwe , in addition all the amazing looks showcased will be available at 3 Edgars stores, In Bulawayo , Sam Levy’s and Sam Nujoma in Harare.

MAC Cosmetics Experience at MAC Sandton City
Spring Fun with Mac Cosmetics Sandton City
With MAC Cosmetics Sandton City Proffesional makeup artist , Annice after my spring makeover
We are sizzling back into my favourite time of year, summer! While temperatures start to warm up with Southern Africa’s unofficial spring, it is time to update your makeup and season colours. Brights and pastels are what the season is all about from orange, peach to pinks! The season is about tasteful colour.
It is no secret, I love MAC and while here in Harare their Sam Levyy's Store is my ultimate go to makeup shop for quality and trendy makeup. So it was only natural that while on my Joburg Shopping Festival trip adventures, I would make a stop at the MAC Cosmetics Standalone store at the popular Sandton City.
Located at one of the most metropolitan shopping destinations in South Africa , Sandton City is the perfect location for a MAC store. Surrounded by leading retail stores and restaurants.
The lovely Annice a professional makeup artist at the MAC Sandton store helped me explore a new spring /summer look but also guided me on some key essentials to have for the season especially for skin control and coverage.
For those with oily skin like myself, Annice introduced me to the amazing MAC oil control lotion which is an oil-free moisturizer that offers lightweight ideal for the season and ensuring that your skin has an amazing matte finish too.
An absolute must-have is their studio fix fluid which gives you fantastic coverage and in my case worked well for my oily skin. The best part is that it gives you a more natural matte finish which I love
As for colours we explored the benefits and joys of mixing eye shadow colour to give you the best look. Colours like orange help with pigmentation and is also a fantastic way to explore colour with the new season.
Mac Experience Sandton City Highlights
Some that has been long overdue on my end , is trying out the MAC eye lashes and Annice without a doubt sold me on what I have been missing out on. We opted for 7s and my what a difference , your eyes not only pop more but the lashes are a natural length which is ideal for everyday glamour
Rocking that MAC Retro Matte Liquid lipstick
For our lippie we went for a retro matte liquid lipstick, opting for a bright orange red which captures the vibrant season. With it being long wearing , lasting up to 8 hours, non feathering and non-bleeding all that are ideal for our high temperatures in summer.
I loved my stylish bright lip colour and the natural finish on my brows too. The look was fun and stylish for the season. Summer is about adventures ,style and exploring new colours. The Sandton store team was wonderful, Annice really got me excited for the season’s new trends and I left a new fan of the 7s. If you are in Zimbabwe, you too can visit the Mac Store at Sam Levy’s for some professional guidance on the latest trends for the new season. A collection that will definitely be on demand is the Ariana Grande Viva Glam 2 ( yes her second collection) It is certainly time to get ready for a sizzling summer!
Spring style with MAC, natural but vibrant
