15 years ago . It’s funny how time flies . A lot has happened since then . But this time of my life was the most significant. Another time another era . Many have died many migrated but I remember it like it was yesterday. I was around 18 turning 19 . At the time I had finished my mentorship visual Arts program with Gallery Delta in Harare and now the next level was “Survival” . After being kicked out twice by family members I had to toughen up and stay on my own with no financial provision or access to support . At the time I was staying in a small town outside Harare called Ruwa . A dear friend of mine was a great supporter of my talent and occasionally provided me with emotional and financial help when he could . At the time I had created a liking for Pop Art and was into drawing hip-hop caricatures and all . One day this dear friend of mine motivated me to take my Sketches to the clothing shops in Harare . Admitting that this could be a possible avenue I could venture into I took my drawings there . First Shop was ‘Alcatraz’ a clothing shop that sold Hip-Hop Brands . I got rejected and was told that their walls were full of Posters and that they couldn’t display any of my sketches . Second space “3rd Base” Ximex Mall shopping Centre . This space was very intimidating for me because most of the clothing was clothing we saw in the Hip-hop videos from the 90s and early 2000s (specializing in brands like - Wu-wear , Johnny Blaze , Sir Benni Miles etc...) . Most would just stop by the door and where hit by the inferiority complex and end there . I handled it differently, I entered . I introduced myself to the crew and told them I would like to show case some of my sketches in their space . The Shop had a Old Chevrolet as the counter and tarred road inside , with a Manhattan Sign by the entrance. The Owner at that time out of excitement asked me instead to draw the whole shop . From then on my journey of working in 3rd Base began . From Wearing worn out sneakers with my toes sticking out and wearing expensive brands , that became part of the process .📸 by @hajilamovement . . #hararezimbabwe #visitzimbabwe #marithefrancoisgirbaud #johnnyblaze #sirbennimiles (at Harare, Zimbabwe) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bve89dXBCmW/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1w8jz99qgnqal
