Feb. 1, 1960. Greensboro, North Carolina. Four black students sat down at a Woolworth lunch counter, asked for service and started a movement.
The peaceful protest of Ezell A. Blair, Jr. (now Jibreel Khazan), Franklin E. McCain, Joseph A. McNeil and David L. Richmond — along with the hundreds of community members who followed suit — led to the desegregation of the counter on July 25.
A piece of the lunch counter is now in the collection of our National Museum of American History.
Visitors there can experience history through a live, interactive program, as seen in this video:
