The world has some twisted way of playing tricks on you. And that was definitely the case for you in relation to your boyfriend, Cory Wilson. The two of you had been together for a year when last week, the worst thing you could possibly imagine came to fruition. Problem was, it wasn’t supposed to come out in the first place.
If Riz hadn’t opened his mouth, you never would’ve known about the secret hookup between Cory and Chloe — it shouldn’t really matter to you as you weren’t with Cory, nor did you care what Chloe did in her spare time. Everyone knew what she was and who she was. You didn’t waste your energy on associating yourself with people like that.
So, even though you weren’t together, it shouldn’t have bothered you and it didn’t. It was until you found it happened again, when Cory and you made things a little more clearer in your relationship meaning officially. Me, you, official. Then, there was no competition, practically. It didn’t matter who came before because you were here now.
That’s what you would’ve said but now that now that you know what you know, there was no coming back.
It was safe to say, you had been avoiding Cory. You pretended like he didn’t exist, like he meant nothing to you, like he was nothing more than another pupil who (unfortunately) went to the school you did. He went along with his business with his friends and you went along with yours with your circle. You could always feel his eyes on you though, whenever you would happen to be in the same class and you were looking around the room, wanting to block anything the teacher was saying in that specific moment, but frankly, it didn’t interest you and you didn’t care. Who wants to learn about Atoms or the solar system? No one. Absolutely no one.
Anyway, as you happened to look around the classroom, your eyes would (sometimes) unfortunately land on his to find him looking directly at you. And as much as you wanted to look away and pretend he meant nothing to you, every time you looked at him, you were reminded of the happy times. Where you would skive of and go to the local chip shop during P.E since that wasn’t your favourite subject and Cory always agreed to come with you, no matter the cost. Because it made you happy or when he somehow sneak up into your window in the evenings, using the trees as a pathway up to your bedroom. That used to be your favourite thing about dating Cory, no matter what people said about him. He had a soft side and you were fortunate to see that side and many more.
Cory was everything to you, your first love, first time, first everything. All of the moments a girl thinks of, he was included in your’s. You never thought you would have your first boyfriend, let alone be doing things like you had done with Cory, not in a million years. Like most girls in school, you thought Cory was a walking STD. The two of you didn’t even like each other before a school project ultimately brought you closer together to the point where you became friends and started dating.
Cory always used to tell you that you were everything. How he had never meant a girl like you, you were someone he had been waiting his entire life for, how lucky he was to have you in his life... blah, blah, blah. Any girl would believe those lies that splurge out of a boy’s mouth and you were one of those. But now, now it was all lies. And, you were sorry to yourself that you ever did believe that was the way Cory Wilson felt about you.
You sighed in relief when the bell went, finally you could get out of this boring Science Lesson and go to another lesson. Hopefully, it’s English. You had a lot of rage that you wanted to write into all of the papers God could give. But no, the lesson was unfortunately P.E.
And you were not going to that lesson.
You prayed to the God’s above that you were able to slip away unnoticed. P.E was not for you and definitely not now that you and Cory were broken up. You used to love it though because you got to watch Cory as he did his P.E lesson, slightly rubbing it in all of the girls’ faces who cared that he was all yours and only yours.
But you didn’t have that satisfaction anymore. So, skiving was the best option.
Saying hello to the owner who always welcomed students whenever they wanted to skive of, he didn’t mind at least if it didn’t get him in trouble and the students didn’t make it a normality but they always did. It was just normal at this point. With your fish and chips in hand, you sat down and smiled as the Yorkshire breeze ran through your hair, causing the loose waves of your hair to float slightly as well.
Nothing could ruin this moment. Good fish and chips and no company to bother you as well as skiving of P.E? Nothing could be better.
It was none other than Cory. You regretted the way he looked attractive to you in every sense of the world. And you regretted the way your heart still longed for him after everything that he had done.
“What are you doing here?” You couldn’t help but ask. “You’re supposed to be in class.”
“And you’re supposed to be in P.E, but hey,” Cory shrugged.
“Whatever,” You didn’t protest when Cory sat next to you on the steps, you immediately moving away from him.
“So, what are you doing out here?”
“You can see what I’m doing.” You gestured to your fish and chips in your hand.
“Yeah, I guess I can.” Cory smiled slightly to himself. “I’ve been wanting to apologise to you.”
“Save your apologises.” You immediately interrupted him. “I do not, not in no way need to hear it.”
“The biggest mistake of your life? Yeah, you’ve said that.”
“Don’t blame alcohol. What were you even doing with her?” You couldn’t help your frustration as you asked one of the questions you had been dying to ask.
“I don’t even know.” Cory sighed. “It was a mistake. I didn’t know how it happened.”
“Oh yes, you do.” You cynically replied. “If you really cared about me then you wouldn’t have done what you did.”
“I was drunk, I wasn’t thinking.”
“Like you never seem to do when a girl throws herself at you!” You stand up, not willing to listen to Cory’s... frankly, bullshit attempt of an apology. “I don’t want to hear it, Cory. It’s the same pathetic excuse every time. I’m done with your apologies. You know what you can do?”
Cory looks at you, after listening to your rant with a somewhat hopeful glint in his eye. “Let me go.”
“What?” Cory stood up too, his hand coming to your free hand, grabbing your wrist. “Wait.... we can figure this out. I... I just need you to give me another chance.”
“I’m done with giving you chances, Cory. I’m done with it all. I get that you messed up and I forgive you — well, I eventually will forgive you but I cannot do this. Back and forth with you is unhealthy and I don’t want to be the only one trying in this relationship, because it sure as hell looks like you don’t give a damn about me.”
“That’s not true,” Cory disagreed. “Y/N... Babe. I love you, okay? And I don’t know what else to do to make you see that I messed up, like big fine. I’ll do anything you want. I want to sort things out. If this has taught me anything, it’s how much I need you in my life, I don’t want to lose what we have.”
As you gaze at Cory with tears threatening to fall out of your eyes, the never ending beautiful memories come to mind and as much as you would love for everything to go back to how it was. You know you wouldn’t be able to do it. You had to do what’s best for you.
You sniffled, wiping your eye from each tear that fell before looking up at Cory, your best friend, the love of your life.
And with a heavy heart, you said. “If you love me, let me go.”
And that’s exactly how you left things.
