Reading Response: WA4 Shitty First Drafts

            In Shitty first drafts Anne Lamott states all the steps she has to go through to come up with her polished works. Most people will see her work in a backwards fashion but I think its genius First Lamott starts off with a summary of what she’s a believer in, and a short description on her life so far. She begins with discussing he work “child’s draft” and brains storms for five pages. During this brainstorming process, she writes a lot of gibberish and sometimes complete nonsense that makes only sense to her because she’s the only one who will read it. Lamott starts her second draft using the form of an outline getting her info in order. 

           She mentions thoughts of suicide and panic, “I’d obsess about getting creamed by a car before I could write a decent second draft.” I think because of the fear she had was normal because I know some people that fear when they are writing because it has to be perfect. Lamott dreaded deadlines, quality, and what the reader will think drove her to make perfection. In my opinion I believe this a very good articles and I love how easy it reads because its written in kind of an informal way.

Progress Blog 8: My favorite experience

My writing experience this semester has changed. I believe its changed for the better. I have tried a lot harder and also progressed for the best as a result. I looked forward to writing because I love to put my own unique outlook or work into a form of writing. One of my favorite things so far is preparing for this photo essay and I am looking forward to start and the another would be this Tumblr assignment. It’s not like a Facebook or Twitter however very similar but it’s in a form as a blog then a status or tweet. At first I wasn’t too keen on the tumbler assignment but it grew on my and I look back and see my portfolio grow. I love this Tumblr digital portfolio and I believe its one of the best things so far.

Progress Blog 7: Photo essay

I love the photo essay project and I am excited to get starting on it. For my photo essay of discourse community, pathos, and logos. I like the EXPOSURE because it has a lot of stunning photographic narratives essay. I love how you can incorporate music and just using words instead of pictures. I often believe pictures are worth thousand words and can mean a lot more to different people. EXPOSURE in my opinion is a great website and it has a very different aspect on life because it’s your own interpretation of what the pictures mean.

Reading Response: WA3 Mother Tongue

             In “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan it explains how hard it was to grow up with her mother’s “limited English” and how every person acted mean, rude, and disrespectful because of her mother broken English. I personally believe that anyone can have broken English and still be intelligent no matter what language. Tan and her mother both connect with each other by having “broken English.” I love the fact that Tan compares the way she talks to that of her mother’s to make her point, that even though is completely different it means the same thing or general the same thing.

            Tan used her “perfect English” to get the things her mother wanted because her mother couldn’t because the hateful and disrespectful ways people acted towards her. Tan did this because she was “ashamed of her mother’s English”. Tan knew what her mother wanted to say, but other people didn’t. Tan uses these rhetorical strategies to defend anyone who has “fractured English” because it doesn’t take after your intelligence. Tan also used a defensive tone to justify that her mother’s “broken English” doesn’t reflect her intelligence. Latter on Tan had to pretend to be her mother and sets out to get her mother the respect she deserves because of her mother’s English drawback.

Progress Blog 6: Pathos

I learned that pathos is defined as an appeal to the emotions of the audience, and depicts feelings that already exist in them. In this form of writing the author using his emotions and thoughts on a subject to influence the reader to understand and agree with the story. Authors who write using pathos often find themselves arguing their point while trying to reach the readers’ feelings. They attempt to sway your feelings toward one side or the other. A very popular example of the use of pathos is the animal shelter commercials. The commercial not only tells about the animals, but uses pictures of abused animals and “heart breaking” music to touch your heart. Even fitness television shows contain pathos. For example, the fast, upbeat music is designed to change your feelings and create more energy. Writing containing the pathos style often uses very descriptive words to make sure the reader fully understands the emotion the writer is attempting to create.  This type of writer is more likely to write about things relating to morals and societal rules.

Progress Blog 5: Tumblr

So far my online experience on Tumblr has been amazing. It has immersed me into a crazy world where I can get my news and see all the beautiful art pages I follow. Everything feels connected in a way. Everything is a few clicks away and if I want to find something that interests me or what to learn more about I search it on the Tumblr search engine. I am loving the Tumblr experience in this class and I believe social media is a good way to be connected to the world and what’s going on rather than a newspaper or finding someone to see their art work.
