I have a heart in my stomach which throbs and mocks.
Sylvia Plath, The Journals of Sylvia Plath (via tremendousandsonorouswords)
There is a sadness in this world, for we are ignorant of many things. Yes, we are ignorant of many beautiful things, things like the truth. So sadness, in our ignorance, is very real. The tears are real. What is this thing called a tear? There are even tiny ducts - tear ducts - to produce these tears should the sadness occur. Then the day when the sadness comes, then we ask: “Will this sadness which makes me cry, will this sadness that makes my heart cry out, will it ever end?”. The answer, of course, is yes. One day, the sadness will end.
stop reposting “self care isn’t drinking tea or taking baths, it’s doing all of your chores and work” shit
how many times do you have to be told by disabled people that it is ableist before you stop?
oh, self care is doing laundry? great. please figure out a way to get my bedridden ass up and down two flights of stairs with laundry baskets and I’ll get right fucking on that.
oh, self care is catching up on three days of work? tell me how to do that when I am so fatigued and cognitively impaired that I cannot form sentences. better yet, tell me how to do that when I’m too sick to have a job in the first place.
oh, self care is “taking a deep breath and sorting through what you need to do?” well, what I need to do is survive. and things that help me survive just don’t make you “Real Self Care For Real Responsible Adults” list.
we all have different coping mechanisms. what you find cliche or meaningless or even patronizing might be an incredibly important resource to somebody else. coping strategies you find helpful may not even be accessible to other people.
and to frame the entire discussion on self care around “self care = being productive and functional in a way described by a capitalist, ableist society” is to send the message that people who aren’t able to adhere to those standards don’t deserve to take care of themselves, don’t deserve to be nice to themselves, and don’t deserve to survive.
Tl;dr- go be a pretentious, ableist prick somewhere else
