there was this trend of promoting healthy male emotionality a couple of years ago, the whole "men don't cry... but you should! and then you'll feel better!" and "not crying will turn you into a zombie... let yourself feel emotions!" singing movement, and i cannot help thinking that that's where the manipulative matcha boy plague of today comes from. men did listen and they did start crying more. it's just that they also didn't stop beating their girlfriends, because beating their girlfriends had nothing to do with their emotional repression and everything to do with knowing they would get away with it. the illness hasn't been cured; it's just that now they know the symptoms and can therefore do their best to cover those up.
