What’s this? That kin-spiration mod is actually alive? And even more? They’re actually releasing the census?!
You are not dreaming, nor are you seeing things! I have returned with the completed 2014 Tumblr Otherkin Census! It only took me half a year to do so!
All the information is on this link, but if you have any questions or concerns(and especially if you see an error), drop a message into my ask box and I’ll get to you as soon as I can.
Thank you to everyone who participated!
A problem that I am coming up with when writing down your kintypes is that I am ending up with a lot of kintypes. Within the polykin group, there are 79 different kintypes, and I’m not done counting yet! At the rate that this is going, this is what the pie graphs are going to look like(this is…
The simplification and lumping basically means a loss of data. You’re right, the graphs don’t look great. Data like that are probably best displayed in a table when possible. Could you do that? I really want to see all the kintypes, not just groups.
Maybe you could have an “other” group for types that include fewer than, say, 3-5 people? Or several, like “other therians,” “other fictionkin,” and so on?
The lost of data was one of the things that prevented me from going with the idea outright. Having tables isn't a bad idea, but do know that a single table will have more than 50 rows. The great thing about the circle graphs is that the information is condensed without taking a ton of space.
I could however do both. Make a graph for the larger categories and use the tables for overall. I like the idea of separating the other category by groups as well, so I will certainly do that. However, even then, there are still some kintypes that are really it's own separate category.
With the different kintypes rising from 79 to 81 and still counting, I will warn that it might end up taking a bit longer to get the census out with the tables(with the time it takes to put it together and check that the info is correct), but I will do it.
For those participating in the Tumblr Otherkin Census, I need your help!
A problem that I am coming up with when writing down your kintypes is that I am ending up with a lot of kintypes. Within the polykin group, there are 79 different kintypes, and I'm not done counting yet! At the rate that this is going, this is what the pie graphs are going to look like(this is made from a partial count so far):
Except for the huge 55(can you guess what kintype that is?), all of the numbers and colors sort of blur together.
This is what I propose:
I will put similar kintypes together to form groups. For example, lionkin, leopardkin, and jaguarkin will be group together to become feral felinekin. Androidkin, cyborgkin, robotkin, and the like would be grouped together to form robotickin. Feral felinekin and robotickin would then become two separate groups rather than six or more groups divided.
Another reason I would want to do this is to keep anonymity. By singling out one person with a kintype no one else has, it could threaten the anonymity of it. This is why fictionkin are already grouped into a single category. If a person, for example, were a Hamletkin, it wouldn't be hard for someone to simply search for a Hamletkin and then stumble across that one person who is Hamletkin and then the census no longer anonymous.
This is why also in the proposal, I would enact an "other" group for those kintypes that can't be group with similar categories and only have one or two people in that group.
With this proposal, the graph from above would look more like this:
Does this seem alright to everyone?
How do we take the census? Just submit a username?
You submit your username and your kintype(s).
are the submissions anonymous? i'm not a troll, just really new to parsing out my kin-ness and afraid of trolls and such
You will have to submit your username to the census in order to prevent trolling as well as making sure my counts are accurate. However, your username will not be shared with anyone other than me, the only mod on this blog, nor will your username be on the census.
The Tumblr 2014 Otherkin Census has Closed!
Thank you to everyone who participated in the event! I will now be doing a final count on the kintypes. For those whose questions I answered late, or still want to be considered, you're still welcomed to submit them as I will be counting these for a while. It's only too late when I've made the graphs.
This is what you should expect from the census conclusion:
The total amount of otherkin who participated.
How many monokin there are verses how many polykin.
The kintypes submitted between monokin and polykin individually, as well as combined.
The census should be published within a week, so look forward to it!
Questions, comments, last minute submissions? Be sure to send in an ask!
that feather crown post is basically cultural appropriation, you might wanna remove it
Deleted, won’t happen again. Sorry for any inconvenience.

They say that the eyes are the door to the soul. For those who want to show their soul more often, might I suggest custom contact lenses? Contact lenses come in all sorts of different styles and colors where you could show your kintype(s) more strikingly.
While I don't know of any contact stores that I can recommend, through a quick Google search, I found such sites as Custom Contacts and Eyes Bright.
