Esme’s Background?
Esme was once Esmeralda, the beautiful main attraction of the Festival of Fools and their full-time act. She was the dancer, a mysterious gypsy who was not all that mysterious at all behind the scenes. Hated by Judge Frollo, Esmeralda and her people were shunned by everyone else in Paris as nothing but an act. They were poorly treated, poorly fed, and poorly paid. Esmeralda was the first to act on this horror, and was nearly burned at the stake for her ‘witchcraft’ against Frollo. She disappeared shortly after the death of the judge, Esmeralda was taken by a spell of actual witchcraft, one that spun her into modern day life. As Esme, she has little memory of why she’s here, but remembers herself as Esmeralda. Having been here long enough to start a small business, Esme has adapted.
Modern Day Esme: Esme has taken to this new life, one which started as one immediately better than her old one- she saw equality at first, until Esme stayed longer. She saw that things hadn’t actually gotten too much better, and she’s a bit bitter on that subject, though she’s still kind and sunny. Esme started her dance studio, reminding her of home, and is glad to still speak French. She volunteers to be charitable, actually running a majority of the local programs. Esme occasionally has bursts of anxiety when she remembers home, how far away it is, and how she’ll never be back. She can then be found cursing the name that brought her here, though she doesn’t know it.
