"Ms. T, did you know that I miss you when I go home?"
[February 4, 2015]
Me: "I'm going to give you two sounds, and I want you to tell me what word you hear when you put the sounds together - 'd-uck'."
Student: "F*ck. Is it f*ck?"
Me: "Nope, and let's not say that word anymore. Listen REALLY closely - 'd-uck'."
Student: "...it's not f*ck?"
Me: "Let's move on."

Student (in a very ticked off voice): "The pencils they're selling at lunch are NOT even real!"
Me: "They're not real?"
Student: "How am I supposed to write with THIS?!"
Thank goodness I'm awesome and know how to sharpen a pencil, which then lead to another student asking, "Ms. T, how are you an expert at everything?"

"There's this room in my basement with a shower, but the shower doesn't work, and my dad is turning it into his man room on Friday. And I get to help him make it. AND I'm allowed in, because I'm a man."

Today's excitement included two handed fist pumps and several excited kiddos shouting "I AM A READERRRRRR!"

My school has a Santa Shop where the kids can buy gifts for their family members. The gifts are all small trinkets, and everything is $1.00. I had the following conversation with one of my sobbing students whose parents didn't send her with any money to shop.
Student: "But I have to get something special for my mom! I wanted to get her a TV!!!"
Me: "I'm so sorry, but there are no TVs at Santa Shop. Don't worry, we are making crafts today to give to our parents for Christmas! I'm sure your mom will think that is really special."
Student (still in tears): "But my mom deserves something special! Are there hats here? Can I please call my mom to ask for money so I can buy her a hat?"

"I had a nightmare during rest time that I touched our Elf on the Shelf."

"Veterans are people who are/were in the military, and they keep us safe from people who might not make very good choices so we can do things like go to school, and eat dinner with our families, and play outside." "Like Spider-Man?" "Yes, kind of like Spider-Man." Thank you to those who have served and are serving our country!
"Have a good night, Ms. T, and be sure to come play at my house sometime!"
(November 4, 2014)
"You might be wondering why I was running in the hall. My neighbor was chasing me and trying to give me a Wet Willie, so I had to get out of there."
(September 29, 2014)
"Do 'cat' and 'hat' rhyme?" "Yes!" "Okay great, what's another word that rhymes with 'cat' and 'hat'?" "Seatbelt!"
(September 23, 2014)
(while making a tower of blocks) "Ms. T, look at our sky raper!!!"

I asked the kids to tell me what they like about their moms. This student originally wrote "My mom is fat because she does exits," then changed what he wrote after he saw my notes. And if you're wondering, mom is on a treadmill in this picture. Happy day before Mother's Day!
Reminder note from one student to another: "Please tell your mom to let us come to your house." Kindergarteners aren't afraid to ask for exactly what they want. I love these kiddos.
Taught a lesson this week about measuring objects using our own feet. The next day, I taught a lesson about using rulers as a standard unit of measure, because everybody's feet are different sizes. So, why do we need a standard unit of measure? Because "we need things right around here," gee dangit!
"You're eating Smarties [candy]?! Those are surprising sour!"
Yesterday we played "Sight Word Bingo", and today was Go Fish. Stella: "Claire, do you have a ball?" Claire: "BINGO! Oops, I mean GOLDFISH!"
