AROUND A TABLE TOO SMALL FOR HIS FRAME BUT JUST RIGHT FOR HERS, BARRET GUFFAWS — he chats, and wisecracks, and plays his worst game of cards to date. ain't the game he's playing, pot hasn't been sweet enough for him in a long time — the one he's playing and what he's after? same as always and he ain't the type to half-ass ; eyes always on target, hold her close with the arm thrown around the back of her chair. every time he gets a laugh out of her, or every time she makes that sound, the huff of air that says she's tryin' not to? it distracts him and he doesn't know ace from spade, can't find it in him to look away from her and to his cards, flinging them out haphazardly instead.

so yeah, he's playing a pretty shitty game of cards, but within their walls, in their dining room? HE'S A WINNER. he's so certain that's the case that when he leans back one of those times and is caught taking her in, all barret can do is laugh and correct her, free hand pressing to his chest earnestly, ❝ nah, ain't peekin' at your cards — not that hard up to win this chumps game, probably counting his goddamn cards anyway, like usual. ❞ jab to throw their friends off done to chuckles of amusement leaves him free to shift his weight so that he can place a kiss high on her brow, quietest his voice has been all night pressed into the skin there, just for her, this part of him, ❝ lookin' at you, baby. how 'bout that? ❞ ( but he wouldn't play that two he catches out of the corner of his eye. )

ONE THING ABOUT IDGIE? SINCE HER BOY GOT HIT BY THAT TRAIN, SHE'S BEEN BETTER ‘BOUT KEEPIN’ AN EAR OUT. more than aware of the chattering that over the past twenty minutes has turned to more hooting and hollering. out the window and a stones throw away from the front entrance of the cafe is the usual gang, all diggin' up dirt and pointin' at the earth they uncover. now, idgie knows what's really happened, but to give away all her secrets, well — then the rock held in a display case atop her counter would lose all it's allure, wouldn't it? can't be having that, no sirree; sees those kids out there living, holding that same sparkle idgie herself gets when on a hunting or fishing trip or when anytime ruth steps through a doorway and only has the heart to give. so her only option when asked what's going on is to lean on her elbows towards her company and give them a bright smile, ❝ you didn't hear? loud as a hog chewin' up a grown man, that there. ❞ a hand is used to gesture rather grandly to the location swarming with kids. ❝ other night, a big ol' crash come down and i'll tell you, must'a been everybody in town that shot straight outta their beds, jammies or none, and onto their porches — ❞ on and on, a retelling of exaggerated tales which idgie has spun over and over the past days.

❝ and what do you know? a METEORITE! BAM! fell straight through poor ol' biddie's roof. two pounder, that. ❞ she juts a thumb towards the hunk of rock on display. idgie knows it was just some sorta freak accident, piece of stone off the train passing through, but the story she tells now that imaginative, out there biddie believed to have happened when she explained the incident over morning coffee is more fun. idgie carries on easily as she slides over a plate of pecan pie, stories always go down easier with a side of sweet, ❝ reckon them kids are over there lookin' for anything that might'a broken off. ❞ a shrug, and she's entirely genuine when she says, ❝ ain't hurtin' nothing. dirt has a way of replacin' itself in the middle of the night when nobody is awake to hear the worms workin'. awful shy, them wrigglers — probably figure me an' buddy won't be findin' them if they only come out in the dark, but my boy? he's a wrangler, don't let that stump he's got fool you none — ❞ she'll talk forever if nobody stops her.

THE SMOKE DISAPPATES AS METAL SHELLS CLANK TO THE GROUND, accompanied by a raising of both arms and a brass proclamation, ❝ YEAH, GET SOME, ASSHOLES! ❞ laughter follows, loud and untamed, made so by putting said assholes in their place, and he's hardly done rubbing it in, ❝ got a funeral song for y'all, goes a little something like: duhn-duhn-duhn-duhn, du — HUH? ❞ a song he never finishes, stopped in his tracks by the feeling of arms winding around one of his. initial reaction is to think he's being halted from celebrating victory and so it's a stammering, ❝ hey, c'mon now — ❞ as aerith is leaning in and these damned kids keep catchin' him off guard; lips pressed to the skin that remains, a whooping holler, and a chipper ‘yeah!’.

if he was stammering before out of some sorta insult taken that he shouldn't rejoice in another's suffering (shoulda chose the right side'a history, that lot), then he is stammering now out of being flustered — his mouth opens, closes, and his cheeks are hot by the time he gets something out; tone of a father teaching lessons, perhaps sounding a little disgruntled, but if she listens, really listens, there is a heart bleeding there, ❝ kid, y'kiss your own, not mine. ❞ he's shrugging his arm away from her grasp, searching for cloud's assistance in removing woman he knows guy's got a soft spot for ( ain't blind ) and of course he finds none ; barret thinks the smug bastard's trying not to laugh.

a scoff escapes his lips as dark shades are removed from his vest and slid over eyes. SOMETHING VULNERABLE TO BE HIDDEN: she pick that up from him? pride swells and pricks at what has been concealed. that he could be such a role model … hell, if marlene's gonna find her confidence someday, HE HOPES SHE'LL BE KISSING HER GUNS AND SMILIN' LIKE AERITH DOES NOW and that it'll be because her old man built her up rather than tearin' her down … he withholds a sniffle, shoves it deep down beneath gruff abrasion, ❝ what're we all doin' standin' around for, huh? ain't nothin' to see here — so ‘less you’re all lookin' for somethin' else to kiss i suggest we get a move on. ❞ he doesn't mean to sound harsh. never does. just a man defendin' the soft, fleshy bits of himself with the hardened and apparently frequently kissed outer bits.

HEFTS HIS WEIGHT DOWN NEXT TO HER, A COBBLED TOGETHER SKEWER IN HAND — and well, how could he help but notice? ❝ damn, tifa, ❞ guffawing laugh and he's gesturing with his more balanced spread of foods to hers, close to jovial ribbing as he says, ❝ all of those 'shrooms? you got anything else on there? ❞ he's leaning forward to tilt his head enough to really investigate what she's got going on ; enough food groups he's satisfied she ain't gonna croak on 'em. she isn't stupid enough to do that anyway, hell, probably eats better than him on average, gotta to manage what she does. at the end of the day he's not her dad and she likes them. let the woman have somethin', even if it's something small as overindulgence in fungus. not judging, he can only hope in hindsight that's clear in brown eyes caught by their fire. whether or not she has time to catch it before he shakes his head and raises his hand up in surrender he isn't sure. but he worries about her, and he's sorta neutral on the things himself and the campfire catches her figure and he's thinkin' she could handle a couple more, can't she?

LET HER HAVE THINGS SHE LIKES, she's more than earned it, and she's still growing far as barret is concerned. heard they're good for the brain once from some old woman spoutin' off that marlene needed 'em in her diet. aw hell, he's just rotating a whole laundry list of excuses for something that doesn't need excused at all. tifa's his friend, plain an' simple. he straightens up, but fills her space instead with his skewer, ❝ c'mon then, take 'em. not a huge fan myself — ❞ normally he might avert his gaze for the embarrassment of tough persona dropped. tonight he doesn't. he wants her to know he means it when he says, ❝ so you go on and get a good taste for 'em now. give you plenty of time to think of how to work 'em into a drink or a dish or somethin' when you get a new place up and runnin'. sure you can get soldier boy to be your guinea pig. ❞ he clears his throat like he's said something improper, but the tilt of his lips clearly gives his amusement at the thought away.
