Varys has a very famous riddle about power residing "where men believe it resides."

Daenerys is, as far as the reader knows, the "proven truth." Her identity is explicit. We watch her grow up, we know who her parents were, and we've followed her entire journey from exile to Breaker of Chains. There's no narrative mystery surrounding whether she's a Targaryen.

Then there's Young Griff. Everything about him is framed through uncertainty: He might be Aegon Targaryen. Varys might be telling the truth. The baby swap might have happened. His education might make him the better king.

And yet, if enough lords accept Young Griff as Aegon, then politically he almost becomes Aegon regardless of his birth. The mystery becomes fact.

Daenerys can present overwhelming evidence of her identity with dragons at her back and an entire army and still face prejudice because she's a woman. Young Griff, meanwhile, may need only a plausible story because legitimacy isn't just about blood, it's about what people are willing to believe.

(This is not meaning the abuse and marital rape Alicent endured. Those were horrific violations inflicted upon her, not choices she made as a ruler. They are an entirely separate conversation.)

Either you were an active political player responsible for your own choices, or you were simply following orders. You can't claim both depending on which version is more flattering in the moment.

She's grieving, sleep-deprived and under immense physical, emotional stress. These are not comparable rules. Get ur money up NOT your funny up.

Exactly. That's the whole problem.

Depending on what is more convenient in the moment, Alicent goes from:

"Will you blame me only for what men have done?"

to washing her hands like Pontius Pilate, claiming she knew nothing, saw nothing, heard nothing, and was completely kept in the dark.

And then, two seconds later, she becomes Rhaenyra's great political advisor, while both of them openly acknowledge that Alicent ruled in her husband's place for years.

So which is it?

Was she powerless, excluded, and unaware? Or was she politically active enough to effectively rule the realm for years?

Both cannot be true. Alicent is not a fucking Schrödinger’s cat.

Corlys knew his son was gay and deep down knew he’d never change. She was doomed from the day they wed. Rhaenyra needed heirs and Laenor wasn’t going to give her any. Laenor didn’t fulfill his duty because he was physically unable to due to his lack of female attraction. Even if she’d had children with Laenor, Alicent and the others would still have found another reason or accused them of being bastards of another man. Rhaenyra could have been the perfect heir, done everything right, and they still would’ve usurped her.

Sis HBO heard the antis and snatched Alicent's hair extensions, her glow, her everything, it's just her blue dress against the world now. See I know she is a prisoner of war so she is not going to dress queenly but so is Hel, and while Hel also does not have good costuming, at least she has the wig! Alicent has a simplistic blue dress and that's it. I don't know what it is but her styling is so off this season, intentional or not. Maybe the haters really got HBO this time. Or maybe it really is just the hair!

Honestly, you read my mind because she just seems so off this season. I don't like that they are watering down her colors and making her look plain. If she's going to wear florent blue, she needs to wear it with some gold trimming, or at least give her something, for what it's worth. Her development this season is horrible, my god. Helaena looks super gorgeous though: I feel like they could've done something truly poetic with the mother-daughter duo since costumes are meant to represent their state of mind and where they are at in their lives. Stripping away Alicent's regal styling feels like a direct concession to the critics rather than a smart narrative choice. Even if she is functionally a prisoner of war, completely abandoning the high-effort hair and signature visual presence that defined her in earlier seasons just makes her screen time feel flat. It is incredibly frustrating to see her reduced to that one plain, unembellished blue dress scene after scene, while other characters in similar dire straits still get to maintain a basic level of character-specific costuming or a proper wig. Intentional or not, watering down her entire aesthetic to this degree doesn't make her look defeated it just makes her look entirely neglected by the wardrobe department.

(One thing I find frustrating is that Hispanic and Latino/a actors are often absent even from fancasts for Dornish characters, despite Dorne drawing heavily from Iberian influences alongside others ie; Andalusia. Fandom discussions frequently emphasize Middle Eastern and South Asian aesthetics which are certainly part of the conversation but the Spanish and Mediterranean inspirations often end up being ignored completely. Feel free to slaughter me 10 different times if this is a bad take tho)
