I agree that this is not the current definition of violence, but violence as a word, carries a psychological weight that would carry over well to such a redefinition. When a bunch of scumbag gang member start peddling drugs and shooting up the neighbor, is that an act of violence or merely a product of the process of violence? When a local grocery store is forced to shut down because they keep getting robbed and the whole neighborhood is crumbling because everyone keeps voting for the same corrupt fucksticks that misappropriate their funds into programs that don’t create any tangible improvement for the neighborhood, is that all part of the system of violence? When a person only eats fast food and sugary junk food, despite the overwhelming public awareness that it will harm their health, even after seeing the repercussions of such eating habits firsthand in a family member or neighbor, is that part of some larger violent process? When an underachieving kid drops out of high school with 75% of his class because he wants to join the gang or leech off government benefits instead, is that the system again? At what point do we ascribe responsibility to the people who actively make the decisions that destroy their own lives and do something to fix that, instead of going on these elaborate, idiotic academic ghost hunts?
